One of my best friends is a psychiatrist for the VA. He just came out of working for a private hospital, and he says there's about half the patient load per doctor. He says that the bureaucracy is annoying (EVERYTHING comes out of a manual, even for MD's like him). But he also says he feels like there's a lot more time to devote to patients, and that the shrinks and nurses he works with are mostly really cool and reasonably motivated. (Just not insane workaholics like at his old job.) He also got a 30% pay cut, but given that he doesn't have to be on call 1/4 as much and it's drastically less stressful, it's overall worth it to him.

I don't think my friend is a stereotypical government drone. I suspect a lot of that depends on which department you work for, etc. If you take an IRS job looking for thrills and providing excellent customer service, I've got bad news for you. If you join the Coast Guard or work at a national park, well, it might be pretty interesting work.

Yeah, no I'm not thinking of doctors. I'm thinking more along the lines of office work. There are a lot of programs and offices in the Portland city government that are specifically on my mind. I wasn't thinking on a Federal level, but you make a good point.

santeesioux, have you considered archeology? Paleontology?

I took an archeology class last year, i enjoyed it but don't really think i would enjoy it that much as a career.

My next door neighbor is a mailman. Great benefits, tons of time off and he's gonna be able to retire at 55!

Damn, plus it looks like an easy job, may have to consider that...

isn't it boring though. hours and hours per day just delivering mail? I'd go crazy.

Learn computers. You will always get a job if you know computers.

Database manager was a pretty good one listed earlier. Man are those folks in demand out there. And nobody understands you, they just know you're valuable.

Get a teamster job like me.

Going to school doesn't mean shit anymore, a lot of people are getting degrees and can't find jobs in their fields.

Job security has meant more than it ever has before.

Sociology BA, stats minor. My profession will be unemployed sports geek ripping on John Hollinger's formulas all day.

agree, Bachelor's degrees are basically what high school diplomas were 15 years ago. Just as long as you have one, it does open door for interviews....things like trade schools aren't bad if you're into that stuff. probably won't get super baller but you'll do ok.

Do it!

I just read that there is like a freeze on USPS hiring cause they don't need anymore people or something..

UPS is always hiring. Tough job though, you need to have a little hair on your chest to stick around. Great company to work for.

FedEx also just built a huge plant out in Troutdale and I know they're hiring a ton of people.

do UPS drivers really clear 100k? someone told me that over the weekend.

Depends on whether you mean with stealing your stuff, or without stealing your stuff.

It takes a lot to become a UPS driver. You can't just walk in and get that job. They make you slave away in the warehouses for a few years first.

Yup. Thats what I've been doing for almost 4 years. I still probably have a 2 year wait to become a driver.

What field? Strawberry Field, of course.
