I'd love to have Jones as well, but not shockingly, they aren't rushing to give up a lengthy wing defender shooting 38% from '3' on a rookie deal.

There are ways to get out of the Hayes deal and include others. Murphy would work, but it doesn't get the Blazers under the Lux tax and that is paramount to Jody and the Vulcans. Can't really blame them. Paying Lux Tax for a roster that is still within a couple games of the #6 Lottery slot, wouldn't make me happy either.

I think Murphy makes less than Hayes does
 
A series of trades, as Atlanta made Collins available and asking price is a starter + FRP:
First, Powell to Rockets for Theis, filler and a FRP

We get under the luxury tax for this year. Warren is expiring so we have money to re-sign Ant and Theis is a good insurance policy in case Nurk bolts.

Interesting that Hollinger's projection of the first two trades has everyone getting worse, sometimes significantly so....lol.
 
* Rival executives are preparing for the possibility that Portland becomes a buyer at the deadline.

* The Trail Blazers appear motivated to dodge the tax. Add in Simons' recent explosion before his restricted free agency, and rival executives have painted CJ McCollum, Norman Powell, Jusuf Nurkic and Robert Covington as potential trade candidates.

* The destination most often linked to McCollum has been New Orleans, who could sensibly deal Jonas Valanciunas and Josh Hart. That would give the Blazers a replacement for Nurkic, a veteran contributor in Hart and sneak under the tax. The Pelicans would be more willing to part with Tomas Satoranksy and Jaxson Hayes over Valanciunas, however.

* For those wondering whether interim general manager Joe Cronin has the agency to make a move like trading McCollum, just look at what he’s already done. The executive has already hired and terminated various figures within Portland's basketball operations, including the scouting department, public relations and medical teams.

* Portland has been mentioned among the long list of Jerami Grant suitors. Detroit was one of Powell's top free agency options just last summer.

* Covington is expected to draw numerous interested teams. Yet Utah, a popular destination mentioned by league figures, has been described to B/R as an unlikely landing spot.

* Before Myles Turner sustained a stress reaction in his left foot, league personnel were pointing to Turner as perhaps the first big domino to fall. There was strong momentum in conversations between Indiana and Portland, yet there's dwindling confidence from league personnel about Turner's injury timeline and his ability to help a potential new team's playoff push this season.

There are a couple of items here of interest. First, $3,515,918. That is the difference between the players coming in and CJ going out. That is very much a Jody-approved, Vulcan-likey number as it would put the Blazer just under the Luxury Tax by $509,760 and turns the Blazers into a team GETTING money versus PAYING money and keeps them out of the Repeater Tax penalty range.

Marang also suggested a couple of picks, which New Orleans has in abundance due to multiple picks and/or swaps coming from the Lakers and Bucks for the Davis and Holiday deals.

That is all well and good from a rebuilding Draft capital, getting under the Lux Tax, and finally decluttering out backcourt a bit although with Hart coming in, that doesn't really declutter, but does open up some shots for other people. Plus, Hart adds a little more size.

Satoransky is just filler on an ending contract which also helps out the Blazers who need to pay And and possibly Nurk.

It's the Jaxon Hayes part that makes me wonder how that would go. He has 12 misdemeanor counts hanging over his head from a domestic complaint/arrest incident. Given the fervor Billups hiring was met with, what would be the ramifications of bringing on Hayes even though as of now, they are just charges. Some of his Draft profiles compared him to Jarrett Allen, which would be something the Blazers could definitely use.

I'm just curious as to the Board's thoughts if something like that were to take place.

If we get a couple of picks, I'd be all over this. The Hayes part might be viewed as a plus in that the team might think they could get out of the contract altogether on misconduct grounds. Hart is a very solid player and the rest are just to make up weight. I am skeptical that New Orleans really wants CJ, though. Why? A last ditch effort to convince Williamson that they're serious about contending so could he please stop eating himself out of the league?

Yeah, Jones is a top ten rookie from this class - we're not getting him.
 
No Jones in a CJ to NO deal is a non-starter for me. If even this guy is not on a table, I'd rather wait til the summer and open up the market for CJ. And I'm not even that crazy about Jones.

Also featured in the calculus for Cronin in any trades with NO... you are effectively conceding your play-in spot to the Pelicans. Is everyone really OK with that?
 
YES -- this team could use a trade asset and right now i would rather miss with Dame being out for another MIN of 4 weeks then TRY and fail to get into the playoffs and only get a 12 to 14 pick.

Now say it with me ill -- This is a LOST season cause of injuries and covid so play for a high pick that can be used maybe for a player but more for using it with CJ.

Fischer had Jonas V instead of Hayes as a possibility. Hart + Jonas V.
Also, pretty sure Portland fans would riot with Hayes.

Dame has pretty much said he doesn’t give a fuck about this season when he said “we will see if I come back this season”.
If he cared he’d say “I’m coming back.”
 
Which, might I add, I’d like for him to get some burn at the end of the season even in a limited fashion just to knock some rust off after the surgery going into the off season.

CJ for Collins would be a good trade for Portland IMO. But getting a 1st and then shipping it to Atlanta is a problem

Since Trae is small and a bad defender, I’m guessing they would be more interested in Powell than CJ.

If you're going all-in to try to win while we have Dame, I suspect we would need to trade Ant. Norm is probably the best shooting guard to pair with Dame because he can play defense and he's a good spot up shooter.
 
We can extract a first for Roco and shift it to ATL for Collins in a CJ swap if ATL would actually be open to it. I've come up with ideas ad nauseum showing the same.

ATL does desperately need another playmaking guard but we know the deficiencies of putting two non-defending perimeter guys together all too well.

I agree, you have to choose in what direction you want to go on in. Rebuild or stay the path?
