The 99-2000 team if the Pippen trade didn't happen

might be stretch because the styles were/are so different

without Pippen?

Dame > Damon
CJ <= Steve Smith (I know many will disagree)
Hood = Walt Williams
Zach < Rasheed
Whiteside <= Sabonis (until Whiteside plays well for a long stretch of games, Sabas is my pick))

current bench < past bench ( not close: Brian Grant, Greg Anthony, Stacy Augmon, Bonzi Wells, Jermaine O'Neal, Detlef Shrempf)

with Pippen:

Dame > Damon

past bench still much better than the current one
 
I kind of see this years team as the 99-00 team, and last years team as the 99 team. Granted, there's no real big "holy shit" acquisition that was made, but it was a lot of turnover from year to the next.

I do agree this team needed a "Pippen" moment, but I don't think there was any realistic Pippen player out there to get. I kind of think Whiteside is a key figure for the team this year. Meaning, if he's a consistent solid contributor, it will help a TON.

I also think Zach is a key too. He needs to be reliable. If he can average 13-8 (or so), it will be huge.

There are a lot of unanswered questions with the team, but I think the talent level is higher than it's been in a while. Bazemore is a lot like Wesley Matthews (does the dirty work, etc), and Mario can be a good contributor too. I like how both of them are savvy but also not "dear god pass to a fucking guard" like Aminu was, or "can't shoot outside of 8 feet" like Turner was, and hopefully not inconsistent and moody like Moe was.

Im not sure Hezonja can shoot outaide of 8 fert, but overall, a solid post.
 
Never liked Pippen here but there is no question he made an impact. If the Blazers had a guy like that now they would be in business for sure.

why didn’t you like him here? He was a huge success here I’ll say considering when we got him at that point of his career.

Great Player no doubt. But i didn't like the persona and the lack of leadership. Yes they made the conference finals with a loaded roster. Yes it pretty much closed the window as they went first round out from that point on and then we all know that team had issues.

Completely disagree on Pippen being the reason the window closed.

Trading Jermaine O'Neal for Dale Davis and Brian Grant for Shawn Kemp in the summer of 2000 had way more of a negative impact on the window than Pippen's leadership.

That’s exactly what it was. Trading Jermaine O’Neal was a huge mistake. Jermaine was a bonafide star that would have been a perfect transition from those 2000 teams to a new era.

You are probably right on that.
This is most likely more personal biased opinion i had about him. The guy was obviously a great player. Didn't like him on or off the court. I feel he could have lead that team better and maybe kept the JailBlazers era from happening but really it's all water under the bridge. I also watched some of the things over the years when he was on the Bulls that didn't sit well with me.
Like i said originally "Never liked Pippen but there is no question he made an impact".

I think Jermaine is really, really overrated by us bitter Blazer fans he had a 4-5ish year time period he was around 20 and 10ish and that definitely is good but a majority of his career he was really not that effective and as a big you don't expect him to fall off the cliff as hard as he did. By the time he was 29, he was basically done being an effective player. Would keeping have him maybe kept the Blazers sort of afloat for a little while? Maybe but for as much as we hate that he got traded his career averages of 13.2ppg, 7.2rpg's efg of 46.7 and ts% of .517 don't really scream elite player, especially when his window of being really effective was so short.

8 seasons in Indiana he averaged 18.6 ppg, 9.6 rpg, and 2.4 bpg. I hardly consider that a small window and it also ignores his defense. Dale Davis played 4 seasons for us and averaged 7.1 points and 7.2 rebounds per game with little else.

It was a horrible trade no matter how you view Jermaine's career.

Bad trade sure but I don't see Jermaine at his peak as the guy would've kept it all together for the Blazers. Say they don't make that trade in the west there was still the Spurs, Lakers, Dallas, Phoenix all better then them though throughout much of Jermaine's prime. They recovered ok it just took a couple of really terrible years which may be keeping Jermaine keeps them from I don't know.

Well it's impossible to know what would've happened if we kept Jermaine, but I do know for sure that Dale Davis wasn't the answer. Brian Grant was by far the heart of that team. He was good for Miami too until he unfortunately started showing signs of Parkinson's disease. That's two good players they lost for basically nothing. That's not a good strategy to keeping a championship window open.
