The fact that he can basically be replaced by Crabbe and not have the team suffer much (if at all) suggests that he's worth far less (salary-wise) than any of the other starters.

We weren't exactly playing heavyweights for the most part. I like Crabbe's future but he wasn't fully replacing Batum's production. We were just winning (which is of course better than losing).

Didn't say he replaced Batum's production; I said the team as a whole performed comparably with Crabbe in his place. We were, of course, lacking a competent backup 3 at that point, but that's hardly Crabbe's fault.

I think you could replace LMA with Kaman for a similar 4 game stretch and still win. Your luck would run out shortly after that though.

The offense was just fine when Batum was hurt

So saying "Batum makes the offense run smooth" seems to be giving him too much credit. His part in it is very small, and ultimately it was just fine without him.

Nice little role player as I've said for years now.

Dude! "Nice little role Player"? This guy takes the toughest defensive assignment EVERY night. Get a clue.

Perhaps. But that's a ridiculous false equivalency. Aldridge is a much bigger part off the offense, and unquestionably worth his contract.

At issue here is whether Batum is worth his. I think that his overall impact on the team, as currently constructed, can basically be replicated by a second year second round pick. Suggests to me that Batum's overall contribution is not 8-figure-worthy.

Or not?

When the Blazers continue to exceed all expectations this year again Batum will get his money and he will have earned every penny of it.

I don't see how Batum isn't unquestionable worth his contract. His future contract? That is hard to say as we don't know what it will be even if people think they can guess it. I also don't think your basically equates to my basically.

Well, we're basically discussing an assumed extension of his current contract that would be comparable to what he's being paid now. I thought that was understood.

Within those parameters, I don't see him being worth another $44M/4. I basically see him as worth a little more than MLE.

He is going to get what Parsons got or more somewhere. Does anyone really want him killing us in the next few years?

Wow, that is bold. I don't agree with it but I give props for throwing it out there.

I have already said I wouldn't sign him for max so I not just going to blindly support him. His current contract (if it was exactly reproduced) honestly wouldn't bother me at this point but I wouldn't go a penny over it. Of course my mind can change between now and then (as could POR Brass').

Batum hit some big shots last year. Remember his step back jumpshot in game 6 against Houston?

If he gets offered what Parsons got...vaya con Dios.

The season is young. Lets see how this turns in about 40-50 games. Then again after the playoffs.
Something tells me even you will adjust your perspective a little. I hope it will be for the better and you will enjoy doing it.

I didn't see Batum guarding Jefferson last night

And Wesley guarded Harden the entire playoff series

Stop making shit up

He's not even close to being worth that kind of contract

Out of the 5 starters he's the least important as far as I'm concerned.

So now you want him to be able to guard not only SF's but also every other position on the court? Including centers? He already had to cover Westbrook this year and the only reason he didn't have to guard Harden more than half the time is because they have a very good SG defender. You don't really watch the games now do you?

I'm questioning if you do because you said

"This guy takes the toughest defensive assignment EVERY night"

No he doesn't. That's not even close to being true.

It's pretty much common knowledge that Batum is the Blazers best lock down defender. However that is not to take anything away from Wes who is also very good. the Blazers are blessed to have both of them. However when it comes to the likes of Durant or James and Melo it is Batum that gets the call every time. Now if you want the guy to also cover Jefferson you would be asking a little much don't you think? Not that he couldn't but c'mon that is a mismatch of epic proportions.

Well I'm glad that as a SF he guards the other SF's in the league

Terry Stotts is a genius for figuring that out

That's still not "This guy takes the toughest defensive assignment EVERY night"

Because he doesn't

Whatever dude! Happy Thanksgiving. Go Blazers!

Lets put it this way, he takes more of the toughest defensive assignments then anyone else in the league I would venture. And Wes is probably top 5 in that department.
