When I first became a Blazers fan in 1990, I was drawn to the Drexler-Porter team's style of play - relentless rebounding and running. I suffered through the slow-down, halfcourt years in between, suited to our star players (Brandon Roy and then Dame) but now we're back to playing sped-up, defense-forward basketball and I love it. I firmly believe that a team that has a system/style of play can raise the game of scrubs (look at OKC, for example, which manages to have a conveyor-belt of new contributors, and while some of it is Presti's drafting, I have a suspicion that players like Wiggins and Mitchell wouldn't look so good on other teams), but it definitely requires buy-in from stars (if Jordan hadn't agreed to the Triangle, Phil Jackson wouldn't've lasted the year). Do we have the right players for the Chauncey/Splitter system? Obviously Jrue, Toumani, Deni, Matisse, Timelord and Blake Wesley are ideal. It remains to be seen if Scoot can blend in, but I'm optimistic. But Dame and Yang, for example, seem totally unsuited. And, perhaps more seriously, I'm worried about Shaedon and Clingan. Reassure me, someone. Because if I have to choose between The System and The Players, right now I choose The System, but it would be shitty to have to unload Clingan or Sharpe.

Losing Matisse and Wesley hurts their ability to run waves of players applying constant defensive pressure. I think that showed last night

We're better than fine. All we have to do is shoot 30% from 3 - that isn't a high bar. But, of course, threads like this are made right after we have a game where we don't.

Look at all the games last night very few won w/a lower 3 pt%.
We shot low 20% on 40 attempts. Fix this and win....Time to trace one of the younger players plus some for a gunslinger.

So, we have a system that, when it doesn't work, means we lose at home to a hated rival missing their three stars, and we're "better than fine"? I mean, I'm not panicking, but I do think it points out some weaknesses that need addressing. I only watched the first half (East Coast Time + time change) but there were moments where nobody even wanted to shoot.

Matisse is more of a tease at this point, and normally we won't have Timelord, either.

They have a great system.

They have amazing role players.

I like the GM. I like the coach so far.

They do not have a true number one option. The offense feels chaotic at times. Like a true pecking order hasn't been established yet. The problem is that they need to find a star who fits this system. Someone who will buy in. I'm not sure if that star exists.

Shae and Tou are two of the worst shooters in the league thus far. Small sample size and Tou gets a pass because of what else he does. Shae does not get a pass. He would only get garbage time on a contender.

To pick one player in particular, how do we feel about Clingan? This was probably his worst game of the season so far, but are we happy with him in general? Great D, great offensive rebounding, but does he have the footspeed to be the best player for us? I mean, we seem to do best when we go small, right? And if he's not there to stop the Aytons of this world from bullying us, then...?

I say this as somebody who was ecstatic when we drafted him, which put me in the minority at the time.

21 year old Clingan isn't a problem; not in the system, not as a starter, and not on the roster.

as for the 'system', only 7 games into a season, 6 games into Splitter's tenure, and a new owner taking over in 4 months, I'm not sure we know what the system is going to look like by the end of the season.

I think it’s way too early to think about switching out players. We are going to shit the bed a few times a year when shots don’t fall, happens to every team. I still believe Sharpe and Tou will raise their 3 point percentage over time. Centers definitely concern me a bit hard to press if the guards can just throw the ball up the court to the other teams center because ours is scared to cover that high. R Williams is best fit for this system if he stayed healthy but than likely won’t happen.

Also depth will be issue losing two of your best tempo changers hurts bad, I mentioned in another thread we really need to think about picking up another elite defender who can replace Blake and Thybulle at least till they get back.

Sharpe and Tou both have great shooting form. To me it’s all confidence and repetition their shots will continue to improve, may have to ride the waves little bit and may not happen this year but we aren’t winning championship this year or next year.

It's only been a few games. Give it half a season.

International ball is much shorter, features far less games, & allows for certain rules (ex. no defensive 3 second that allows people to camp and rest, handchecking also slows things down). By that, will their bodies and mentality be able to keep up?

It's one thing to compete and do this (ideally, this should be peak basketball), it's another to just run while only chasing a .500 record.

See Ja Morant in Memphis. There's no way a consistent 23-25ppg All Star suddenly just starts shooting 39% out of the blue and get capped at 28mpg.

If he has no ego, he'll work better to adapt but I do think the coaches need to realize this is not soccer since there is far less space to operate and therefore, some individuality is needed as well in order to break through defenses.

Just like Splitter, Iisalo comes from Paris Basketball, too.

You do need shooting for this system. If it's not clicking, like with last night, you need to learn to slow down and utilize your stars.

I don't know that Dame would thrive in this system, either

Either way, should be interesting to revisit this in January

Splitter should communicate to Shaedon & Deni to do whatever it takes to improve their three shot. Tise and Scoot sure did improve since last year. If Shae and Deni want to be all stars they will need a respectfull three ball.

How has Scoot improved from last year if he hasnt played a meaningful game yet this year?

We don’t know if we have a system that works until it passes muster with the refs. That won’t come until the all-star break.

In college sports, sometimes the NFL, maybe other sports you can have a system and get players to fit in.

Can't do that in the NBA. If the NBA you build the system around the players you have. When you change players maybe you have a similar system, but that's a coincidence.

Tell that to Phil Jackson and his 11 rings.

One thing style they play they need some shooters on the team and we got one in Dame but they need surround this players with shooters and you will have a team move up fast
