"The Dark Knight" took in a record $155.34 million in its first weekend, topping the previous best of $151.1 million for "Spider-Man 3" in May 2007 and pacing Hollywood to its biggest weekend ever, according to studio estimates Sunday.

"We knew it would be big, but we never expected to dominate the marketplace like we did," said Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros., which released "The Dark Knight." The movie should shoot past the $200 million mark by the end of the week, he said.

Hollywood set an overall revenue record of $253 million for a three-day weekend, beating the $218.4 million haul over the weekend of July 7, 2006, according to box-office tracker Media By Numbers.

"This weekend is such a juggernaut," said Nikki Rocco, head of distribution for Universal, whose musical "Mamma Mia!" debuted at No. 2 with $27.6 million.

That opening-weekend total will probably go up a little on Monday.

I'm most likely going to see it tomorrow. I can't wait.

saw it tonight. avoided most spoilers and trailers.
great movie. it's truly the joker's movie. that may have been my favorite character performance ever.

In all honesty, I don't think Ledger deserves the Oscar. While he put on a good show through out...generally...there were only a couple "oscar-worthy" scenes for him, and both of them happened in the interrogation scene. I don't buy it.

I don't think he deserves the Oscar, either. All this Oscar talk is mostly blog happy fan boys who are being over-excited. Does he put up a great performance? Yes, but not Oscar worthy. I just posted the picture of the trophy because I thought it was awesome.

I will say though, Ledger outshined Bale by far in the movie. God what a great movie.

Spoiler 1: I don't buy Harvey Dent being dead at all. Right before Batman tackles him to save Gordon's kid, he flips the coin and it lands on heads. Then we see Batman and the kid hanging on, and Dent on the ground presumably dead. I don't buy him being dead, at all. They didn't show a casket shot or anything.

Spoiler 2: Mr. Reese is going to be the Riddler, IMO. I know in the comics it was Edward Nigma, but Mr. Reese (mysterious--get it?) is far too similar. If they do go ahead and do a third movie, which they will (hopefully Nolan will stay on board), I think we'll see Two-Face and the Riddler.

Riddler? Played by some unknown actor? Pass.

Oh, and what is going to happen with Joker?

Great movie and I don't feel like adding a spoiler, but I hope Riddler is the next villain.

Played by some unknown actor? So what if he's unknown. Riddler couldn't carry a full storyline either, that's why he'd probably be a secondary bad guy like Scarecrow (BB) and Two Face (TDK).

I'd personally love Bane in the next one, but that's skipping wayyyy ahead in the timeline.
If they plan on bringing Joker back, I honestly think Tom Waits could pull it off for a few scenes...

Heath Ledger made this movie what it was, his performance was breathtaking.........10/10 Mr. Ledger......10/10

I don't think you can bring back the Joker in the Nolan/Bale franchise, you just can't disrespect Heath and his performance like that. Heath's joker blew Jack's out of the water. The only other actor I think could pull off such a cynical Joker is Depp, but out of respect for Heath, I don't think he'd take the role.

I think to end the Nolan era of Batman, we could have Commissioner Gordon tell Batman that Joker has escaped Arkum and leave it on a cliff hanger. Seems like a very fitting end to the Nolan-era Batman films.

BTW, besides the interrogation scene...the body bag scene was fuckin' incredible. So creepy seeing Heath laying there.

Except that the Joker is the most important villain in the Batman franchise, and the character's sole purpose is causing mayhem in Gotham. He would never just get up and peace out.

Are you referring to my ending to the series? Who mentioned anything about "peacing out"? I said he has escaped from Arkum, not completely run away to never terrorize Gotham again.

Well you're saying that this is what they should do so that no one reprises the role...

I just saw this movie. It was great. Heath played Joker perfectly.

QUOTE (GMJigga @ Jul 21 2008, 05:08 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Well you're saying that this is what they should do so that no one reprises the role...

Nobody should reprise the role in the Nolan/Bale era of Batman. Once Nolan is done making Batman films; whoever wants to continue with the franchise or start it over again, can re-cast the Joker.

And I'm saying you can't do that. The Joker is as important to the franchise as the caped crusader. Plus this isn't like the Two-Face end of the movie where you could leave the option open for him not coming back because he's dead. The Joker is still alive in Gotham.

So you don't think Nolan is capable of pulling off a successful Batman film without the Joker? Nolan and company left plenty of options open for the third movie. They left open Two Face who is most likely not dead. If you picked up on the coin flip, before we see Dent on the ground, the coin landed on heads.

They left open the possibility of Mr. Reese being the Riddler (mysteries, mysterious--the name tie in), and then Lucious Fox also mentioned that the new suit would protect him from cats---an obvious Catwoman reference.

The Joker may be the main antagonist in Batman, but is it very possible for Nolan to pull off a film without reprising the Joker for a film. Joker does not need to be in every Batman film made. The plans were for a trilogy of Nolan-directed films. He's already used the Joker, it doesn't need to be brought back.

I don't think he could, either.

He has stated that he put everything that he had, into this movie, in terms of what he wanted out of a Batman movie. If he walked away from the franchise now, it would be complete in my eyes. He isn't signed on for three movies, Bale is. I would not be surprised at all if Nolan left his Batman legacy with this film.

A few thoughts since.

1) It sounds, HK, like you need to show the director of this play the box office tally and remind him that money, BS walks.

2) As cerebral as TDK was, if there was a similar script, The Riddler could carry a story as primary villian. Schumacher was good @ visuals but as far as plot, etc... he was total crap. Some of the best animated Batman shows involve the Riddler.

3) Joker is to Batman as Lex Luthor is to Superman.

Probably.

I remember Bane. From the TV show. For some reason, he always seemed like someone who was wearing an S&M costume. Always freaked me out.

I honestly think there was one on BBF.

Did anybody bother to see this in IMAX, yet?
