Should the Blazers start the Tank early this season

I was under the impression that as long as they stay in the Lottery they keep that pick until eventually It becomes a second round pick. Is that correct?
How do they get the pick back?

We just need to convey it to Chicago before 2028. Once we convey it, we have control of the 2028 pick and could potentially swap with Milwaukee. If we do not make the playoffs before then, it converts to a 2nd.

Which I have no problem losing a second round pick. They can always buy one. Seems like teams throw second round picks out there like chump change.

Obviously we would rather lose a second instead of a first. Losing the ability to swap with Milwaukee could be huge though.

Interesting to watch how people are changing their votes. Right now pretty firm 65% to 35% against tanking.
Last week it was 70%-30%.

big game coming up against the Grizz. I voted No, but I'd also advocate to keep guys out with injuries as long as possible. So, somewhere in the middle I suppose.

That is a really good comparison there with the Grizzlies. You would think "No Way" would they be in "Tank" mode. But they sit with the same record as the Blazers.
It's going to be an interesting matchup. Grizzlies you would think would be all about trying to make the playoffs.

By the time this roster is healthy a playoff spot will likely be out of reach - especially with how stacked the west is.

Tanking is inevitable - which feels like the 15th season in a row now.

I am one of the people who rallied against tanking for the last three years but I just don't see the sense in trying to win games they need to lose right now.

Last year was blatantly tanked which landed Hansen Yang — a prospect that’s probably three years away.

Do you trust Cronin? He sits on assets for too long imo. There was a very small window to trade Grant, who is now a negative asset.

Cronin and Co saw what they thought was a gem. I think they hoped he would translate sooner to NBA basketball rather than later. But, yeah he's a three year project at least.

It does show you that blatantly tanking doesn't net you much. We don't need to blatantly tank this year. It's coming quite naturally with all the injuries.

It's not that I don't trust Cronin. I see an inexperienced GM who literally was learning on the job and given a shot. We have seen some good moves with the Dame trade, netting Toumani and picks, getting Dame back and Jrue.

There have also been misses. Drafting Murray. Drafting Rupert (Though he finally had a good game). Yang can be argued to be in this category. Shaedon is still a question mark.

He tried to trade Grant. No one wanted him. The mistake was in resigning him to such a big contract. He has played better this season and I am sure will be on the block come the deadline.

If nothing else we've built trade value for Grant and Timelord which was sort of the goal coming into the season...both are more tradeable at this deadlline than the last one.

I agree with most of this. Blatantly tanking doesn’t really need to happen because it’s already happening. Last year though that last win against the Spurs was downright stupid.
I’m also tired of the picks Cronin is making. He seems to take the guy that “Might” turn into something rather than the player that is more polished. High risk high reward type players usually are exactly what they were.
Sharpe was a risk. Rupert was a risk. Yang is a risk.
Joe seems to pick well in the second round but I’m really not impressed with his first round picks. Scoot was probably his obvious choice but that too looks a bit weak to this point.

"It does show you that blatantly tanking doesn't net you much"

well, it netted the Spurs 5 championships AND Wemby, AND a team currently 17-7 and tied for 4th seed

it netted Minny Anthony Edwards; netted OKC Chet Holmgren; netted Memphis Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson; netted Dallas Doncic & Cooper Flagg; netted Detroit Cade Cunningham; netted Orlando Banchero and Franz Wagner

now, I think there's a huge grey area separating 'blatant-tank' from 'organic-tank'. In many cases it's eye of the beholder. For the Blazers I was in favor of a version of organic tanking that I think they should have done the minute Portland started shopping Dame. At that point, they should have traded Simons and Nurkic; should NOT have re-signed Grant (unless it was a S&T); and should have NEVER taken back Ayton in the Dame trade. If they couldn't immediately have traded those guys then when the season starts you sit them and play young guys. Choose one track instead of two

but the Blazers fiddle-fucked around and dithered seasons away

having a shittly record is all about securing opportunities. And when those opportunities arrive, having the smarts to see the best choice coupled with some luck is what you hope for. But the Blazers haven't had much smarts or much luck. Sharpe over Dyson Daniels, Jalen Williams, Jalen Duren. Scoot over Amen; Utah took PG Keyonte George at 16 while Blazers took Scoot at 3. George is averaging 23-4-7 this year while Scoot will miss half a season.

Clingan was probably the best the Blazers could do in a poor draft although I remember people talking about trading down in that draft. Kyshawn George is looking pretty good this season

I think Yang will go down as a major draft blunder. The stakes at #11 are lower so it won't be the level of Blunder like Larue Martin over Bob McAdoo; Bowie over Jordan; Webster over CP3; or Durant over Oden. It would be more like Zach over Donovan or Adebayo. Knowing what Atlanta got for Queen and knowing the Blazers had that opportunity makes matter worse

so, I don't think the problem is the tanking, whatever form it took. It was the choices before, during, and after each tank that were the issues. That Portland was tanking, yet at the same time always working hard to stay under the tax line are the surest indicators of mismanagement and miscalculations

The good news is that Dundon reportedly will take ownership of the team in March. I really have a hard time believing that he likes what he's seeing from Joe's rebuild. So we might have a new front office by the draft.

I'm not a big fan of his picks either. Some may still play out. But, it's mostly been high risk, no reward.

Cronin came out glowing on the Dame trade, but he started by giving players away with little return. He has overpaid Grant and maybe some others. He has held on to Kris and Rayan too long. At least Rayan finally had a good game.

With Dame leaving, I see why he drafted Scoot, though he could have signed or traded for a point guard as a filler. Could have just kept Jrue, plus he did trade for Brogdon. Thompson looks like the better pick thus far.

It will be interesting to see what happens this deadline and next Summer. Dame has given the team a short time to put a team around him. We have some good pieces in Deni and Toumani, but we need more.

I think so also.
I would think the new owner/owners would want their own guy in there.
