Deron Williams had an MRI performed on his left knee Thursday and while results showed no structural damage, he will sit out the game against the Clippers.
Williams said the MRI showed a sprain and he listed himself as day-to-day.
Joining Williams on the sideline will be Wesley Matthews, the other half of the projected starting backcourt when the Mavericks have a full roster of players.
Matthews played more minutes than expected on Wednesday in the win at Phoenix and coach Rick Carlisle said he was being held out on the second night of a back-to-back as a precaution.
"This was not a pre-scheduled rest day," Carlisle said of Matthews. "But considering the minutes he did put in, this is the right move for us."
As for Williams, he said: "He came out of it a little sore. We don't consider it serious, but he will be out (Thursday)."
It's not a shocker that the Mavericks are having to go through some stops and starts with Matthews and Williams. Neither played in the preseason until the final exhibition. Matthews is coming off Achilles surgery and came up limping slightly after a shot he took in the second half Wednesday.
Williams battled calf muscle problems in camp and dinged his knee when he got tangled with the Suns Eric Bledsoe.
