The Meyers Leonard Thread

Funny, I thought this too. A dig at the hats? :)

Actually, it's just one hat--it's just that the hat is of a platypus wearing a hat. My lack of maturity is actually reflected in the fact that I have the platypus wearing sunglasses as well.

We need to be patient with Meyers. He is only 21 years old, and no other 21 year old center in the history of the league has been any good. Patience I tell you. Give him another 10-11 years, and we will be laughing at all those other teams that passed on him.

Green font, MM. Green font.

Given the choice, would you guys trade MyLe for Bismack Biyombo?

Hmm. Biyombo is surprisingly undersized. He makes up for it by having a RIDICULOUS wingspan. Just watching him swat shots in Summer League. He is still REALLY raw and doesn't really do ANYTHING but block shots. It's a tough call. And the danger with him is that his contract will need renewing soon. I'd really rather try to get Udoh, which I think the Bucks might do just because they're set with rangy defenders with Henson and Sanders and might quite like a seven foot jump shooter.

Udoh, really? Are you aware that he's a much worse rebounder than Leonard is? In three years, his highest TRB% is 11.0. This last year, there were 182 players as good or better than that. But he's your archetype defensive center?

I think it is a bit funny that most people liked Joel, but bemoaned the fact that he couldn't score on offense to save his life. Now we have a guy who can already shoot well, scores off the pick and roll, and shows signs of some basic post moves (scoring 3x what Joel did) and we are upset he isn't Joel.

Chill!

I'd rather have our center not score much and dominate the glass, set hard picks, intimidate defensively.

I don't know how many people notice of how big of a homer I am. Shit there are comments to never go "full mags". When a full blown homer is talking shit about a blazer; there is a full blown problem.

I see Travis outlaw and Leonard in the same development schedule. We will see a decent player in 4 years. Anyone willing to wait that long, having him our 2nd rotation center?

why can't we get a cheap more veteran backup to Lopez for a few years?

That's what I'm hoping for. We just need a stop gap rotation big, so we aren't handcuffed to Leonard's development. If he pans out; great! If not; we won't be all pissy if he sucks. At least I won't.

I think we were all expecting the big sophomore jump. We may not get it. But Meyers wasn't even as bad as people were complaining last year. Guy is more advanced then 70% of the Centers that come out of the draft offensively. Problem is he might be in the bottom 30% defensively.

Repped. You hit the nail on the head of my frustration. He just looks lost. He's okay, but he just has so much promise. A guy that big, that coordinated, that offensively skilled, that can move that quickly? Man, he should dominate.

Right now, he's the Blazer most frustrating to me.

exactly, if he does not work hard on his D and rebounding to become at least "decent" he can mostly ride the pine, if he shows gradual improvenemt and works hard he "earns" minutes, pretty simple to me

agree, we also need to realize we are just 3 months from the end of last season - miracles are not happening

people already have their mind made up, they are going to see what they want to see at this point

My problem is I keep hoping to see what I want, and with Leonard it should be happening. How can a professional be so freaking clueless after receiving so much coaching?

His stats are deceiving. He's so much less impactful on the court than he should be.

I think we need to try a different big man coach, some guys can relate better that others to certain guys, this KIM guy we've had is not working - so time to move on

I actually think we should consider Pryz if he was available

His offense isn't really the issue. It's his (complete lack of) awareness on the defensive end. Zero (positive) impact at that end so far.

It's stunning to me. How can he not show more improvement? How has he worked on anything else other than his defense? I keep using the same word, but he's so...frustrating.

people want him to be something he isnt right now (and may never be), but imo thats the wrong way to look at him

as of now he is our 4th big give or take, not usually the object of such consternation

I've advocated bringing Przy on as our 3rd string center.

I agree we need another backup big man. I wouldn't be as sour on Leonard as a prospect if we had a legit backup and Meyers was the 3rd string guy. Or if we had a Paul Millsap proven rebounding stud off the bench at the 4 spot then Meyers would be ok as the 4th big. I'm not sure whats left for $2.5 mil I would love Brand or Dalembert but don't think they'd be interested. We probably need to find a Greg Steisman or something.

Right now I feel pretty good about our team with a short term injury to any starter, except the center spot. At PG we could have McCollum or Watson start. At SG we could have McCollum or Wright start with Batum playing some SG. At SF obviously Wright could start. At PF Wright could start if we want a pair of smaller forwards or if we want a bruiser TRob could start a few select games. But if Lopez goes down we are going to be a mess with an undersized starting lineup, little interior D, poor rebounding and Joel Freeland as the main backup.

If Neil wants to win now, which from all the offseason moves to date I believe he is trying to do, then the team desperately needs to address the backup center spot. Leonard could possibly be a Matt Bonner style big off the bench this season, but he is not a defensive or rebounding big, there is just no way he will pickup those skills in a few months.

Leonard is more physical than I think most give him credit for, it just doesnt always show up. When we played the Lakers last year, I expected Leonard to get destroyed by Howard, but he actually held his own and played physical. Howard outplayed him handily of course, but I though he did pretty well.

He has the body to bang, but centers that are more tricky with moves gets him lost on the floor. Going against Howard isn't as good of a tell as when I watch him go against the centers with good post moves.

But on offense, he needs to use his size to his advantage. I don't want a finesse Leonard. I want him to try his best to dunk at every opportunity.

You can have all the ability in the world. Mental make up is huge as well though

He's not better than last summer, that's been a year.

He's not better than college, and that's been 2 years.

Travis Outlaw
Quintel Woods
Ronnie Murphy
Meyrr s Leonard?

Some guys never get it.

I watch Meyers Leonar and see a guy that just plays goofy as fuck and looks lost out there. And my god does he take some terrible/ugly looking shots.

His real chance is to go the Channing Frye route and become a gimmick center and play for a team that doesn't care about defense. Leonar obviously doesn't play like a real center. He could average a good number of pts next season and I wouldn't care. I absolutely loathe his style of play.

he's done Max, as a coach for Meyers would be interesting

I agree that he's done...for games. For practice, he'd be fantastic. And if we needed him for spot duty, I think he'd be able to lay six fouls on another player in short order.
