They use to go to Salt Lake awhile back but cancel just for Las Vegas. Maybe they don't want injuries too.

So no one has a real answer as to why we only do 1 summer league?
Vegas is the official summer league of the NBA. The other two are tiny 4 and 8 team deals. I'd guess that they're not interested in traveling 3000 miles to the Orlando one, and that we're not invited to the SLC one.

Also, the others are awfully early. Better to have a little time for the athletes to get acclimated.

Tatum and Brown were good for Celtics last night. I know it's just a Summer League game but should be encouraging for them to see that they can both play in the same team and win. I think long term Tatum will be a 3 while Brown will be a 2, so future looks good for Boston. Perhaps they were spot on taking Tatum instead of Fultz, this way they might actually have a top 5 pick next year from Lakers (who look very weak) or a very high 2019 pick from Sacramento. They could add Ayton and Porter for example and address their frontcourt issues.

Clever fecks might also have decent 2019 pick from Clippers (lottery protected) and a good Memphis pick (it's 1-6 protected in 2019 and 1-8 in 2020, it's not unthinkable that Memphis will be a lottery team in 2019 but not bad enough to be top 6 still).

What I find weird about picks like the one Clippers owe them, they are lottery protected for 2019 and 2020 draft and then become unprotected 2022 second round pick if not conveyed - Celtics are basically gambling on Clippers not being bad during that period. I think a protection like this can comfortably turn a decent asset (which a no. 20 or so would be) into a close to worthless one (second round pick some two years later).

Big SL for Pat. He's not guaranteed. High $$$ given out in FA means someone may fall through the cracks and get nabbed by the Blazers.

Any way to watch/stream summer league games after they're over? I have an event Sat. afternoon.

Probably just want to go to Vegas as a lowkey staff 'work' vacation and only want to compete in one SL to lessen chance of unnecessary injury.

This is my guess. Too many over zealous players who have no chance of making it in the NBA are out there doing what ever it takes to find a home. Can't blame them but it adds risk to a teams investment. This is another reason why I could care less if we go deep into the "summer league playoffs".

I want Collins, Swanigan, and Layman to play as many games as possible.

I have a strange feeling that Project Pat is going to outplay Layman and actually end up deserving some minutes this season. Call it intuition. I saw some things from him towards the end of last season that kind of surprised me.

Edit - Just so you know, I thought he was hot garbage before that.

I think Pat+Layman would easily replace Crabbe if we could offload him

Pat already totally outplayed Layman. Layman had that magical 8-minute debut in garbage time against GSW and then was hot garbage after that. Hell, even his shooting percentages in D League sucked.

Whenever Connaughton got minutes, he played well. I'd take Connaughton over Layman in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, Layman has a guaranteed contract for 2017-18 and Pat does not.

Ah, this reminds me of the great Khryapa/Monia wars...

The difference being both of those guys actually started over half the games they played in a Blazers uniform. God, were we awful back then. We traded Monia to SAC at the deadline and they played him a grand total of 7 minutes after the trade and he was out of the league after that - and he was STARTING for us.

Pat has been in the league 2 years, Layman 1. Players often improve significantly between year 1 and year 2. It will be interesting to see if that holds true for Jake.
I thought Jake looked more promising than Pat when comparing their 1st years only.

Both definitely improved. If Layman just would have hit more shots he would have looked great. I thought the rest of his game was adequate.

I want to see a whole lot of Layman bricking threes off the back iron while Pat runs through the lane for a ferocious put back dunk that he then also puts off the back iron.

We used to do the SLC league. We also used to be in some league in LA. That one is gone now.

The summer leagues used to be something that wasn't run by the league at all. They took it over. But it also didn't have this much talent involved. I don't think marquee rookies used to play. I remember Jermaine O'Neal and Zach Randolph played before it was televised. All we had was a box score. It was a big deal when the Blazers sent Brian Wheeler (by himself) down to call the games.

We used to do the Rocky Mountain Summer League, non? That doesn't exist anymore? Wasn't Qyntel Woods a Rocky Mountain league all star or something? ;)

Yup. We did a few leagues. The Rocky Mountain Review. I think we originally didn't do Vegas. This was as far back as like the late 90s early 2000s. I know Jermaine and I think even Bonzi played in one of the leagues. It has been a while.

I went to the RMR for about 10 years. (1998-2009) the first few were in the delta center downtown, but after that they had it out in the burbs at a community college. Most teams left and joined the Vegas league instead. No comparison in venues....

Well think Pat going have show big this summer for Olshey to pick up his contract by the 25 of July.
