I actually like the idea of a franchise tag for the NBA, but I think it should only be able to apply to a player a team drafted. It would have prevented Shaq from bolting to LA, Lebron bolting to Miami, Mourning from bolting to Miami....

Perhaps if stars "demand a trade" teams will get better return with a franchise tag. Because now, there is always the threat of that player leaving for nothing.

If Orlando wouldn't have low balled Shaq he would've stayed.

Really? I am talking about one on one defense not double teams and help defense.

How many times last season did he hold the guy he was guarding below their scoring average?

That's impossible to answer. Even when he starts, he only plays about 20 MPG.

But, I can tell you this. Noah Vonleh has not started 97 games the last two seasons because of his offense. Last season he had the lowest scoring average of any player in the entire league to start at least half his teams' games. In 2015-16, he had the 3rd lowest scoring average of any starter - Luc Mbah a Moute and Tayshaun Prince were they only starters to score less than Vonleh, and guess what they are known for - their defense.

In fact, I think at this point in his career, the Mbah a Moute comparison is very accurate (in terms of role, not position). He's a guy that starts for his defense and the other little things he does, but you don't count on him to score more than 4 points in a game. If you get more, it's a pleasant surprise, but you don't expect it or depend on it.

Okay. I guess I was mistaken.

Well they wouldn't have the full amount but if the guaranteed portion was given in the signing bonus (as most of them are in the NFL) and all guaranteed money was given to those players, once they're cut you don't owe them a dime. If Meyers contract was 4 yrs 40 mil but with only 15 mil guaranteed and given to him in his first year then cutting him would essentially free up that cap space. So, no we wouldn't have the full 28 mil but we would have a lot of it.

You do realize that with CJ's money kicking in, that even if you hadn't spent a dime on Nards and Turner. Portland would be just under the softcap this year. Giving them only the full MLE to work with.
Now if Portland didn't sign Crabbe, Turner, Harkless, Nards they'd have the ability to offer 1 max contract this year to a free agent they didn't own bird rights to.
However I'm not sure how a team without those 4 players is better suited than how the team sits today.

Looks like the Cavs have enough headaches to worry about instead of trading for Melo.

Nope, I didn't take that into account lol. Either way non fully guaranteed contracts would make the NBA a whole lot more interesting.

Nope. According to Spotrac, after signing Collins, and Swanigan, and with the dead money for Varajao and Ezeli, the Blazers current total cap allocations stands at $138,756,647. Cut out around $56 million for the four guys you mention and the Blazers only would have around $16 million to spend on a free agent. Cut Pat and they'd be at about $17.5 M in cap space. Almost enough to re-sign Crabbe or Turner.

If anything this kills their chance at Melo.

Does this increase the chances he will expand his list of permissible destinations to include Portland?

I've kind of cooled on the idea of getting Melo (was never that hot on it to begin with), but with the circus atmosphere in CLE, perhaps going to a stable team whose stars want to be here and want you to join them, wouldn't be such a bad thing.

And, also - FUCK HOU!

I think the Knicks need to wait him out. Maybe by September he'll realize that Houston isn't happening.

Melo can't play the three.... Love can't play center..... I'm not sure if LeBron can realistically play shooting guard.

How is that going to work?

This is just a suggestion but might be a good one for the teams involved:

New York Knicks
receive PF Channing Frye (expiring contract), SF James Ennis (expiring contract), PG Wade Baldwin IV, 2019 first-round pick (from Memphis)

Memphis Grizzlies receive PF Kevin Love, SG Iman Shumpert, future first-round pick (from Cleveland)

Cleveland Cavaliers receive Carmelo Anthony, Marc Gasol

I don't see how we get involved.

I'm sure he can play the two, but that doesn't make him a two. Is that the position you want to have LeBron defending for 36-40 minutes per night?

NBA 2 guards suck. There are literally 3-5 elite ones. Rather have him guarding Klay than Durant. :dunno:

So we are once again left out?

If Kyrie doesn't shock the NBA world and demand a trade, we could have had a decent chance at landing Melo. Now, not so much.

Maybe we don't regret this one in the long run.

Maybe PG a year from now? We should start a new thread for him now.

To be left out we had to be in to begin with. We never were.
