Fucking garbage! The ONLY way I could conceivably on-board with trading for Melo is if we're trading Turner or Crabbe AND Meyers for him. If we're not dumping at least one of Turner/Crabbe, while taking back salary, then any trade is a non-starter. Turner/Crabbe have to go before we take back anyone that's not on a rookie contract.

Now about Melo. I am somewhat intrigued with him at PF. Offensively he'd obviously be a huge improvement over Vonleh. But Vonleh is our best defender at PF, and 2nd best defender overall. I think Vonleh's defense is probably more valuable than adding another scoring option when we have Dame/CJ/Nurk who should be getting the lion's share of the shots. Also, let's not forget that Nurkic was finding Harkless on all his cuts to the basket, and opening up wide-open 10' jumpers for Vonleh. I think that what we already have is better than what we would have after the trade - and we'd keep our draft pick!

It has to be Turner or Crabbe with Leonard, to make the salaries match per CBA. Or some combination (two) of Aminu/Davis/Harkless with Leonard.

Right. I wrote earlier that I don't see us using Ezeli because we want the cap relief.

I would assume NO isn't going to somehow use Ezeli's non-guaranteed deal in this kind of trade - we need the cap relief to avoid the tax if this trade scenario happens.

The Knicks have a lot of cap space available, though they have to deal with DRose and his massive cap hold. In theory, we could trade $36M (or whatever) for the $26M incoming Melo contract.

Since we'd be sending the Knicks a 4th C, maybe we could get them to send us O'Quinn.

I'm with Schilly - that this could be a good deal. It gets a little tough if we're going to be sending out a ~30MPG rotation player, or two, on top of Leonard. I would wait and see before making any judgment other than Melo can still play. I wouldn't judge him by how the Knicks fared with him - I went to a Knicks game at the Garden 2 years ago (Melo didn't play) and that team started and played several actual D-Leaguers.

On the other hand, I don't know that Melo at SF alongside Dame, CJ, and Nurk, is going to make us a team that can compete with the Warriors any better than the Cavs did. For this reason, I'd much rather see us go after a guy who's under the radar but with some upside. Someone like Otto Porter.

The math matters.

Melo + O'Quinn make ~$30.3M.

Leonard + Ezili's salaries add up to ~$17.7M. So we'd need to add another ~$13M to make the salaries match. So it's not just Ezeli and a draft pick...

Harkless would work cap-wise and would make some sense since the Blazers have a lot of guys who can play SF. He's from New York so it could be a good move for him.

I wouldn't want to see us give up both Mo and Aminu, but I don't disagree with your suggestion.

That said, Mo + Ezeli + Leonard adds up to $10M + $7.7M + ~$10M. We'd be taking on ~$7M (not using Ezeli's option) and another ~$3M (if this is allowed), putting us at ~$140M, or even further over the LT. Or if we renounce Connaughton and Quarterman, we're at ~$137M. I'd have to look to be sure we can take back that 10% over the amount we're sending out (the ~$3M mentioned), considering our cap situation at the start of the summer.

I'm not opposed to paying the LT, and likely PA isn't either. It has to be done strategically, and I'm not convinced paying it after this deal is a good idea.

I do feel sorry for the x-Blazer front office exec. who is now out of a job for sharing inside trade information to a trainer with loose lips. People think Trump hates leaks? Wait until someone shares this thread with PA or Neil.

I agree about Aminu. I was responding to your Leonard and Ezeli package. I'm not in love with this trade, but I can see it as worth considering. Melo is still a capable scorer, which this team needs at positions other than guards. The team would have glaring defensive issues, but Melo, CJ and Dame wouldn't be on the floor together all of the time. If it works, the Blazers could be in position for a deep run. If not, Melo and O'Quinn likely are gone the next year and it works as a salary dump.

It's not a one dimensional formula. You have to score and defend. I will say that the team with Nurk had reasonable defense. Just not convinced adding melo will help as much as it hurts.
 
Shorthand answer - NO THANK YOU! Melo is waaaaay to toxic for our locker room. Not to mention we dont need a volume shooter like Melo.

That's fair, and that is the question - "Is Melo an upgrade over Mo or not?"

I would much rather go after a guy like Mo. Someone under the radar, proven contributor, young, maybe ready to break out. I mentioned Otto Porter earlier. Unfortunately, it seems like we've seen Mo's ceiling, but I hope I'm wrong...
 
I'll be honest. Not sure exactly what it would take to get him here, but I think Melo would be good for our squad. As far as him being a cancer in the locker room and all that.....I'm sure he'd realize this was his last chance. Also Dame and CJ are too strong willed and too good of leaders to let that shit get out of hand regardless of who the player is. ON the court he is a proven scorer in this league. His low post/ mid range game would alleviate (had to google that word) a lot of the pressure from our backcourt. Wouldn't let opposing defenses sag the way they did last season, would keep them honest. Wouldn't mind seeing him in one of our new unis opening night. The fact it's being talked about in this dump means it will never happen though. Move along, nothing to see here.

I do agree with you that Dame and CJ would be able to get Melo focused when he got here. My concern is its a long season. How would he react if things weren't going well. Big ego in a small market during a rough stretch. I guess we would find out how bad he wants it.
