Jonathon Simmons just became an unrestricted FA today.

Zero idea if Neil is even interested in bringing him in, but I love his game and would certainly help offset moving a guy like Mo or Crabbe...

Even if we "lost" in this big trade, if it cleared enough room to sign him to a reasonable, longer-term deal, I'd consider that a win altogether...

If we could somehow get Gordon AND clear room to add him... slam dunk. That'd be a hell of a boost to our bench.

What does he do besides dunk? Looks like anything outside of 3' gets you below 40% and he can't (but tries to) shoot the three. His assist to turnover ratio is not great either. He's is a D and D guy (defense and dunk)? I'll pass.

Besides, I'm always scared of picking up players that SA passes on.

I would love to get Simmons, but we are currently $37.6 million over the salary cap.

If we make the trade I proposed last night would get us Gordon (and Ariza and Lin):

It also saves us $14.2 million in 2017-18 salary. That gets us to $122.5 million (assuming we cut Connaughton by the 25th). That's still about $3.25 million above the tax threshold, but about $2.75 below the apron. Unfortunately, that is not enough below the apron to allow us to throw us the non-tax payer MLE to sign Simmons. We'd still need to to clear an additional ~$5.6 million in salary just to offer Simmons the $8.4 million non-tax payer MLE.

So, not impossible to get both Gordon and Simmons, but highly improbable.

The problem is that it looks like Olshey don't want him.
Some reports say the Blazers will take Anderson if NY take back Meyers. NYK really want Harkless. That might be the hang up. Im sure Neil has his own leverage in these trade talks.

Trade Davis, shouldn't be hard to move him.

Even if we did, would the $8.4 million non-tax payer MLE be enough to land Simmons?

I have no idea. I know the market is drying up, but I really have no idea what kind of offers Simmons will be getting.

So, since Meyers is not going to NYK, who else other than hark are we giving up? Isnt NY supposed to get back like 23M$ in salary?

I don't know either, but I think it'd be in the ballpark.

Fuck, both Meyers and Anderson. I like my trade proposal better. We get rid of two of our huge contracts, lose Harkless, but get back three solid veteran role players and save $14 million in cap space this year, more going forward.

Maybe that's not feasible, but I'd rather try to get that and "miss out", than take on Anderson's contract (at his age, with his injury history) all for the sake of getting rid of Meyers Leonard. Yeah, Meyers sucks, but I'd rather plant him on the end of the bench than take on an even worse contract.

FWIW

So Neil/Terry desperately want a big who can shoot from the outside. They were hoping for it to be Meyers but finally gave up. And they don't think the rookies are ready. This is the only reason they would want Anderson and his contract

Anderson might not be the one coming to PDX

So you are saying this trey rodriguez guy knows more than he is saying? his tweet is a bit cryptic

I'm not saying i totally believe it, just relaying the information. This guy back on June 28th said that Houston was talking to NY for Melo.

Another thought.....Portland may end up getting nothing for Harkless+Leonard. Instead just using Harkless to move Leonard's contract.

Dropping $20 million in salary would put Portland below the luxury tax level. Maybe they can poach a second rounder for their troubles.

If this is indeed the scenario that goes down, what say you? Would you rather have Anderson over nothing?

yeah what he doesn't say is who portland is getting back if they find a home for Leonard. Hard to believe that is the only hold up.

That's not happening.

I don't think Olshey has enough buzz words to weasel his way through a press conference after that move.

Uhhh yeah I totally fucked up and had to give up in a promising player to get rid of a bad contract.

At least if they got a player back he can force feed me some of that hope stuff I so desperately crave.
