I run a small business that manufactures a lot of our products in China. It's fucking stressful as hell in the best of times, but this year my blood pressure has gone through the roof thanks to these import tariffs. I've raised all my prices drastically to cover the new costs (so yes, it's a tax on American consumers). A lot of my competitors haven't yet (I don't know what the fuck they are thinking, but I guess maybe they just have more inventory?) and so I've taken a massive hit in sales.
It's taken a ridiculous amount of my time trying to figure out new pricing strategies in the face of increased competition. I don't engage in anything shady, but I know several of my competitors are avoiding these duties by getting their Chinese vendors to doctor invoices to hide the true costs. Because I do everything by the books, I'm penalized competitively. When your single biggest cost goes up overnight by 25%, it's a fucking nightmare.
I've looked at moving manufacturing to other Asian countries (American is simply not an option), but jeez, after identifying vendors, getting prototypes and then manufacturing/freight, it can take me 9 months to make the transition. What's the point when Trump can wake up next week and throw tariffs on that country too?
I like designing new stuff. It's what I'm good at, and in normal circumstances it's what I'd be doing. But with all my cash going into covering tariffs, I don't have the funds to invest in new designs I've been developing. And even if I did, jesus I feel like with all the uncertainty I don't want to throw more on by introducing new products. This is just a clear-cut example of government intervention picking winners and losers, and forcing entrepreneurs to focus on things that just aren't good for the larger economy. Why on earth should I have to build into my business model wondering who a politician will get angry with next week?
It used to be that you could at least rely on Republicans not to fuck with small businesses, and they can't even do that anymore.
"Trade wars are easy to win," they tell us.
Yeah, they may be easy for you, asshole.
I have never been more fucked over personally by a politician in my life. Someday I will be ranting to my great grandkids about how you should never vote for a goddamned Republican again.
