hey yall

me and denny had a chat, and we want to try something that could be alot of fun.

im sure you have all heard of/ are familiar with gm drafts. everybody drafts players, fill out a team, and argues about who is better. gets kinda boring after awhile and goes away.

heres the catch.

after we all draft our teams, me and denny and a few others will put the legwork into inputing all of the players into a computer version of nba live/2k. all the players will have their current contracts. if you sign up for one of these teams, they will be yours to do with as you wish. make trades to fill holes. basically, you will be the gm.

the games will be simulated and box scores posted so you can follow your teams progress. playoffs, all-star game, etc. the idea is for this to run for as long as there is interest. that means season to season, the draft, offseason, coach hirings/firings, etc. ideally, this would continue FOREVER!

there are obviously ALOT of variables in the direction we would want to take this. but for starters, we would like 30 teams, with a minimum of 12 players per team.

will this be done with the same timeline as the season or will it be one where there are multiple seasons simulated per year?

so to clarify a couple things...

first thing we will do is the draft. the draft will most likely be done in a league subforum on this site. we are open to ideas as well, but it will be your basic gm draft.

the season will be simulated in full, giving you results for each game, as well as game and season stats. the playoff seeding will be determined the same as in the nba. the non playoff teams will go into the lottery, same as the nba.

the best thing about this is that it continues from season to season. the season ends and the offseason begins. you keep your rosters, and add rookies through the draft, and players through free agency.

like i said before, we would like this to evolve organically. we are open to suggestions and we want to work together to make this as ideal as possible. official rules will be posted as they are developed with everyones feedback.

i think it would have to be with the nba timeline to correctly incorporate rookies/ trade deadline/ etc. but all of us are going to decide what works best for US.
 
one thing to think about, if we have a diehard pacers poster, and someone takes them for the hell of it, the pacer fan should get the team imo, and you can pick something else. just thinking out loud i guess.
 
We can simulate multiple seasons, but that's asking a lot of dd who'll be running the simulations on his computer.

What we can do is play an accelerated schedule so we end our season by the end of the NBA season, then deal with a slower pace next season.

The draft would be done as we've done our GM drafts at S2 for the past few years. The draft order is randomly selected. The draft is a snake draft - 1st pick in 1st round gets last pick in 2nd round, etc. The draft is done in three threads. One has a list of the rosters. One has a list of the draft order and the picks once they're made. The last one is where we make our picks when our turn comes around.

We do something like 6 hours to make a pick. If your turn comes after 9PM ET, you get until 9AM ET the next morning so you're not penalized for sleeping.

You can take less than 6 hours and the next guy gets his turn as soon as a pick is made. If you don't make your pick within the 6 hours, you can make your pick any time after that, but you lose the chance to draft guys already taken by the time you do make your pick.

If you miss X picks in a row, you forfeit your team.

random player draft could work, it will likely be up to everyone how they want to do it. i just think a manual draft would put your personal touch on your team from the jump.
 
Real injuries and suspensions or in-game sim?
 
Good timing since xohoops just died. I'm guessing it won't be as in depth as xohoops was though.

Shape and JRay need to join so I can keep whuppin their asses in sim ball.

BTW I want to be the Warriors.

well im open to any help i can get as well. not really looking to be out on an island here. and i dont want to get to a point where im overwhelmed and this falls apart. i think in the end we will all get out of this what we put in.

not familliar with xo but id like to start out slow, and build as interest/activity builds.
 
I'm going to snag the Bulls for MikeDC. If he wants to decline, he'll say so.

xohoops (formerly FFS) was a sim league built up by some guy over the past several years. It went year round with the season, yearly draft, free agency, trades of course, etc. etc. It used real time stats so every quarter of the NBA season (20 games or so) it would update them for all the players. Obviously several years of use/tinkering made it pretty good and it grew somewhat steadily into like two or three separate leagues of like 20+ teams. About a month ago the guy who ran and owned it got his dream job analyzing stats for an NBA team and didn't have time to run it any more so its been abandoned though there is a chance it could come back if some of the users can pick up a lot of the slack.
