This is the "OFFICIAL" Will Barton thread. We should talk about him more...

If he didn't have a guaranteed contract I would consider cutting him. I don't see how he will ever be a rotational NBA player. With such a horrific jumpshot, and playing SG, he needs to be amazing in other aspects of the game to play at the level of a replacement player. Barton has a long way to go to hit that minimum competency level and he doesn't have too much upside. Maybe a team that needs to add salary to get to the minimum cap like Atlanta would take him off our hands for free.

My Simple 9-hour Daily Workout Plan for Will Barton:

Eat for an hour.
Shoot for an hour.
Lift Weights for an hour.

I was really hoping he would develop into a Stacy Augman type. He could get there someday. Augman had a horrible jump shot throughout his career, but his defense and running the break was what made him special.

Yeah, Barton made me think of Augmon too when we got him. The difference is, Augmon is smart.

When a game devolves into straight up rat ball, Barton is an All Star. Hopefully we don't have too many of those games, unless we are the team that's ahead by 20 in the 4th, of course.

If there were some way to bring Barton in when an opposing wing is torching us and tell him to go all spider man on defense, and to pass, not dominate the ball, on offense, that would be cool. But seemingly impossible.

I agree with you.

He's not a very skilled player. He's not a very physically strong player. He's not a very young player.

All of those things add up to him not being a very good prospect.

Will is my new Robert Pack. Plays at 100mph for good or ill. When we're bad, he's a reason to watch.

He's not quite ready to help us on a consistent basis. Couple years away. Outlaw 2.0

"Couple years away" is inconsistent with "Outlaw 2.0" unless what he's "away" from is getting worse.

Some players make you mad because they don't put in the effort, or they just fade into the background. At least you can't say that of Will. I think making him play point in Summer League is an attempt to FORCE him to pay attention to other players. If he's being given the ball by someone else, he can always think "he wants me to shoot it!!!" and just be a ball stopper. But if he's being told "you have to run an offense, it's supposed to make him think twice. Now, it remains to be seen if this will have any effect, but I applaud the effort. I also think it's an acknowledgement that he's more of a PG than CJ is. Which is a little depressing. But also an acknowledgement of Willz Skillz, which he has plenty of, even if he looks like a hog on ice sometimes.

(In fact, I struggle to describe Will. People keep saying he's crazy athletic, but he actually isn't. It's like Darius Miles said when people said that of him - he's just long. And he seems to have elastic in his joints - everything's a little too springy and not quite properly attached to his core.)

HCP's avatar reminds me that I actually have this on a 7" single:

At the time I didn't get it, because it wasn't "Paid in Full". But now I acknowledge its genius.

He's 8 months older than CJ. He's over a year younger than Damian. Jesus Ed, as you get older you like 'em younger.

For an unskilled player, he's quite old.

Both CJ and Damian are polished products, especially on the offensive end. They can (and hopefully will) improve defensively, but they can score.

If Barton were 19 and raw offensively, it would be excusable. As it is, he's 22 and I don't think it's likely he's suddenly going to be anything approaching average in NBA offensive skills.

Y'ever watched a Daddy Longlegs trying to fly?

Still feel this way?
