toumani camara excitement

Camara has only been with us for 11 games, but he may already be the most over-rated Blazer of all time. Why are people so excited about him? His numbers are awful.

If you project them out per 36, he's averaging 7.7 pounds, 6.4 rebounds as s a PF, with a god awful TS% of 43%. That is abysmal for a guy who doesn't even shoot much. Maybe it's because there were no expectations for him, but the fact he's in the rotation just proves how thin we are at forward.

Yeah, he's a rookie, but he's 23.5 years old.
Because he’s our only player that plays defense!

Even if his jumper never comes around to a respectable level, Camara can still have an effective role in a good Blazer offense. Picks need to be set & he can certainly play the dunker spot rolling to the hoop and crashing the boards while others look to score. Portland's offense has been pretty clunky with various guards out and should look a lot better when they return. Over time as Scoot and Shaedon mature this should be less and less of an issue.

Toumani's +/- (-1.5) is a hell of a lot better than both the Blazers, and Victor Wemby.

Toumani, Thybule, and Walker on the court together is a nightmare for other teams' bench players. It's like a furious left-right-uppercut combo.

I know it made zero sense, but can you imagine Jrue with that lineup?

Camara (#14) jumped ahead of Scoot (#19) in early season rookie rankings. Chet & Wemby are battling in out for the #1 spot.

Maybe the people who are giving Camara the Pippen moniker are overhyping him. But I don’t even need that to be hyped about him.

Already better than Thybulle defensively imo, and making this amount the next three years ($1.9m, $2.2m, $2.4m). Who wouldn’t be excited about that?

Camara and Walker are a great wing duo to have off the bench. If they are the 3rd and 4th best forwards on this roster in a few years, I would be very confident about making some noise in the west.

Aghh scoot don’t remind me.. he makes Westbrook look like Reggie miller as a shooter

If Camara was shooting the 3 ball at a 40% clip like Mattise is, no one would be questioning the hype. Toumani is the biggest forward in their rotation while Mattise is smallest wing. Both are really versatile defenders capable of switching off on a variety of players, but their sizes don't really have them competing head to head for minutes.

Guarding which positions? Thybulle to me looks better at defending guards. Camara, who is 20 lbs heavier is better at defending either forward position. Having both in there together is nice to have.

Thybulle gets blown by pretty consistently. His defensive value lies in deflections, steals, and blocks. That's about it.

how exactly are you cleaning this egg off your face?

never in Blazer history had a player won Defensive player of the year….and you have to go back to 1990-91 when Portland had a first team All Defense player - Buck Williams
It's odd to me that you claim Thybulle is not a great defender pointing to lack of rebounds but one post later are lauding Buck for making 1st team All D.

Matisse has made two All D 2nd teams... he's consistently excellent on that end. As the guy who is usually charged with guarding the opposing team's lead guard/wing, he's typically on ball out on the perimeter & not boxing out.

To me, it's like judging a TE in the NFL by catches. There are TE's that are huge contributors to their teams success, but mostly block and hardly ever catch the ball....and there are TE's that area also huge contributors to their teams success, but hardly ever block and go out on routes. Both attributes are important in the game, depending on the team and the scheme.

The team currently has no rebounding from anyone - we were killed on the boards by Utah. Thybulle is good coming off the bench however our best defender is Cámara, hands down. Thybulle is a hustler and will break up passes and is good with help side D. He’s averaging 1.5 steals per game and 1.5 rebounds per game. Not 2nd team defense level. Cámara is averaging 8.6 rebounds and 1.2 steals and often guards the opponent’s best player
