This is what the Blazers have to work with that could help them acquire additional pieces.

• Trade Exception (Tim Quarterman, expiring 6/28/18) — $543,471
• Trade Exception (Allen Crabbe, expiring 7/25/18) — $12,969,502
• Trade Exception (Noah Vonleh, expiring 2/8/19) — $3,505,233

I'll ignore Quarterman's for now and focus on the other two. Here is where I think Portland has the ability to add someone that will impact them fairly significantly. Then the issue is being over the Luxury Tax and the implications that brings.

However, if they want until after July 1, I believe they would use the Allen Crabbe TPE for example and then have until the end of the year to make moves to try and get back under the cap. Of course that means some unbalanced trades or someone taking on a contract for no salary coming back which means Portland probably has to throw in a Draft pick of some kind. (Someone please clarify if that isn't quite correct)

The Blazers also have the Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception: $5,291,918 which is lower than the Regular Mid-Level exception. Unfortunately, so many other teams will have the full MLE, Portland will be at the end of the line in terms of FA's unless someone really wants to play with Dame on a discount.

Neil has his work cut out for himself after all the money that was spend on contracts that haven't been very productive.

Personally, I think the Crabbe TPE will be used in one of a few ways:

- Similar to the RLEC, not used. Just (poof!) ... I call this the Bill & Ted model.

- Getting a bust-ish former lotto pick with a year or two on their rookie deal (or a late 1st who was just drafted) and absorbing an MLE-ish "bad" contract

- doing a S&T starting at 12.9M for another team's UFA (not much draft stock going out) ...

or good RFA (back up the Brinks' truck)

Please don't suggest S&T's as a viable player acquisition option for this summer, ESPECIALLY in relation to the TPE. You're going to make @hoopsjock's head explode, and our 3-on-3 team needs him.

Acquiring a player via S&T will hard cap us at the apron, and we won't be able to retain any of our FA's, including Nurk.

Why would they have to wait until July 1 to use the Crabbe TPE, aren’t trades not allowed to be official until after the draft (new year) anyway?

The best option to me is still to use the Crabbe TPE to take on a shitty contract, attached with a first round pick.

The second option is to trade it for a Courtney Lee, I just keep going back and forth on whether or not Allen/Olshey would consider someone like that worth the tax payments.

Doesn't matter whether it's restricted or unrestricted, but the other team has the right to match the deal. Also look at PPP's post a couple above to see why it isn't a viable option.

The tax if I remember correctly, is determined on the last day of the regular season. However, we are free to make trades before next years salaries come into effect. Its an important distinction when looking at who can fit into our TPEs.
For example, Tyson Chandler is currently at 13 million in salary. With the crabbe TPE plus 100k, we could trade for him right now. However, after july1st, his salary goes to 13.5, and we could not trade for him.
Obviously, hes a bad example, but something to look at for trading at the draft versus during free agency.

Correct. Tax is calculated from the roster of the last regular season game.

Keep in mind that even with using the TPE, we could bloat the payroll and make moves at the trade deadline to ease that payroll which is what @RR7 was explaining.

That got me thinking to what the plan will be with Aminu. I say either extend him or trade him now. His value won’t get higher after that playoff performance he had.

I doubt if he'll be traded by himself. He actually has considerable trade value as both an expiring contract and a solid veteran roll player who comes up big in the playoffs. If we do trade him, and I'm not opposed, we should try to package him with one of our onerous contracts (Meyers or Turner) for a highly compensated player that will actually make us better.

As I mentioned yesterday, according to the ESPN trade checker, Turner + Aminu for Blake Griffin works (but it's still using 2017-18 salaries). We could also do Chief + Meyers (plus a whole lot of draft picks and other considerations) for someone like Kawhi Leonard.

I'm not claiming either of these scenarios are realistic, just pointing out how we could package Chief with another contract to get something valuable back in return.

Chief and Turner (along with our pick) for Blake is one of my favorite trade fantasies this offseason. But the more I read about the pistons the more it seems like they’re all aboard the griffin train, and it wasn’t just a van gundy move. But maybe that’s just talk.

Yeah I think they’d trade Porter the problem is not many teams have money and I can’t see them getting equal value in return. They’d most likely have to take back bad contracts. Oubre would be much easier to trade and while he’s a player in his own right, he’s nowhere near Porters level.

His contract is worth it. Best glue guy in the league. People want to get Robert Covington for $16M a year... and somehow his contract is valuable.. but Porter is 3 times the player.

Porter is making twice as much as Covington, and is three times as good. I'd rather have one Otto Porter Jr. than two Robert Covingtons.

The playoffs were such a small sample size (4 & 5 games respectively) that using stats to show one player is better than another is pointless. Dame's playoffs stats are terrible.....

However, looking at the entire year (82 games) provides better clarity. Porter does a lot more to help a team win than CJ does.
