Trade deadline

The Sabres are also an atrocious face-off team, maybe the worst in the league. Trochek and Carrick would be a massive upgrade for them.

A guy I would target in a trade (most likely this summer), Auston Matthews. I am not sure the Leafs will even be open to discussing trading him, but it's a call I'd make if I were useless awful Drury.

Matthews has two years left on his contract after this season, with a $13.25M cap hit.
He'll play next season at only 29, so you get him for his 29- and 30-year-old seasons.
The Leafs have done absolutely nothing in the playoffs with Matthews. This season they aren't even going to make the playoffs, so they may be looking to be bold and make big changes this coming summer.
The Rangers will be maybe $30M under the cap, so they have plenty of money to spend, and there are not even remotely close to top level free agents available this coming summer, so a trade for a top guy is the only way to get a top guy.
Matthews has a NMC, but I would be surprised if he wouldn't be willing to play in NYC.

There are zero rumors of Drury talking to Toronto, let alone Matthews even being available, but it's something I'd look into. It would take a ton to get him, but you could start with Lafreniere, some extra picks the Rangers have/will add at the trade DL, maybe Perreault, and some other pieces.

Highly unlikely this is even discussed, but to me a trade for a top guy is the only way the Rangers can have a reboot, and quite frankly, until they add a top guy I think they'll always come up short.

Add Brady Tkachuk to the target list as well, he also only has two years remaining on his contract ($8.2M cap hit - plays next season at 27) and a NMC, which I'm sure he'd waive to play in NYC, but I doubt Ottawa trades him this summer, even with Ottawa most likely missing the playoffs as well. It seems more likely Toronto would maybe be open to discussing a Matthews trade sooner.

One thing you never know is, both Matthews and Tkachuk may tell Toronto and Ottawa respectively, they won't re-sign in two years, which means both will be traded this summer, or next summer. I think both American guys would love to play for the Original 6 NYR in NYC, and I do think there's a very strong chance one of these two guys are on the Rangers for the 2028-2029 season, or sooner via trade.

This is how my mind would work if I were useless awful Drury.

Thats a lot of words about trying to trade for two guys their current teams would have absolutely NO INTEREST in trading away.

Exactly Grey. I would jump for joy if I could get two of these three for Trochek. Helenius, Kulich or Rosen. This is not a re-tool. That's horse shit. This is total rebuild. We need young prospects close to or NHL ready. We need centers. Our farm system sucks moose dick. We don't need to add another star. This run is over.

We also need to fire the coach for the Pack. He sucks. Yes, not a lot of talent down there but that coach clearly blows.

I disagree with that. Do I think either will be traded before the trade DL this season, no shot. I think Matthews may be in play this summer if Toronto misses the playoffs, as it appears they will. I certainly believe they could be in play at next seasons trade DL if either team is struggling, and the summer of 2027 I think there's a reasonable chance they will be available, especially Tkachuk.

Anything can happen, but I think it is highly unlikely Tkachuk re-signs in Ottawa. Maybe he has some wonderful tie to the organization and the fans, but short of that Ottawa is a not a great hockey city, their fans are whatever, that building is whatever. I really don't see a huge pull or reason why Tkachuk would want to stay in Ottawa long-term outside of potential loyalty, and we'll see if that's enough to keep him.

Matthews is different in that Toronto is a huge city and hockey crazy, but you have to wonder if both parties may want a change if/when they miss the playoffs this season. With all their "talent", they have made it past round 1 one time with Matthews (never to the ECF), and now they may miss the playoffs all together. That's an absolute disaster for them and the city of Toronto; they may not be too happy with their Captain right now. It may be time for a change of culture and chemistry for that organization as a whole, and Matthews may want a change of scenery as well, who knows.

I believe Tkachuk is more likely to say no I will not re-sign, which means Ottawa will trade him next season/after next season, but I think Matthews is more likely to potentially be traded this summer if he/Toronto wants to change the mojo around that team. I standby what I wrote, one of the two will be Rangers in the 2028-2029 season or sooner. I also believe these are the types of players that useless awful Drury should be inquiring about, in the Rangers situation any good GM would. These are the types of players you need to get back on top. That goes double and triple when you step back and realize all the top potential 2026 FA's have re-signed with their teams, and the group of potential FA's in the summer of 2027 isn't looking great either.

BTW, as for re-tool or re-build, it doesn't matter even one drop what you or I or anyone thinks they should do, useless awful Drury was very clear in his letter this is a re-tool. He also said it about six times in a recent short interview, including saying multiple times a re-tool is different than a re-build, we are re-tooling. Nothing in the Rangers DNA says they are going to re-build, and whether I agree of not, I don't see a re-build happening. So, like it or not, regardless of what's right or wrong/good or bad, useless awful Drury has been very clear many many times, re-tool not re-build. As such, these are the type of players I'd be targeting.

Chuck grow a brain and drop your go for it now philosophy. It’s fucking over dude this core blows and this run is completely destroyed. They have no chance of winning anything and there’s no trade that can fix that. A massive total rebuild is the only answer.

As usual you miss the point. The team is terrible, Drury is terrible, I am not advocating going for it next season, or that they can/will be contender's next season. What I am saying is the Pres/GM of the team, CHRIS DRURY, has said many MANY MANY times in the letter, in interviews, in discussions this is a re-tool not a re-build, and he has said that defiantly, emphatically, and combatively so.

I KNOW you don't agree with that, okay that's your opinion, and it doesn't mean sh*t, and neither does mine. The Pres/GM CHRIS DRURY has made his intentions clear, whether you or I or anyone agree or disagree is irrelevant. Accept that, and stop making it about my opinion or your opinion, which again don't mean SH*T. This is about what Drury has written and said over and over again, and his opinion matters, our opinions do not.

We can have our opinions, that's fine obviously, but I'm living in reality based on Drury's words, this is a re-tool not a re-build, and they expect to be back in the hunt next season. As such I am talking about moves that fit what the Pres/GM CHRIS DRURY has said his goal/plan are.

You can choose to live in a fantasy make believe world where a massive total rebuild (your words) is possible and on the table. I choose to live in reality where the Pres/GM has said over and over again, re-tool not a re-build. There is no shot this team will undergo a massive rebuild, that's not my opinion, I am not saying they should or shouldn't, I'm saying they will not. Nothing in the Rangers DNA says they will, and the Pres/GM has very clearly said they will not rebuild. I am living in the world that exists, not the world I want it to be. That's that.

Read and understand that please. And if you still choose to live in a fantasy massive total rebuild world, that's fine. But don't get angry at me or anyone who decides to live in Rangers reality world based on the words coming directly from the man running the whole organization.

Should be interesting if Gavrikov asks out. He should bring back a nice return if he does.

There was a youtube video thumbnail I saw that seemed to imply he could be traded. I didn't watch it.
