Trade deadline

I also read on ESPN that the playoff salary cap rules are different this year which may restrict teams from acquiring the higher-paid players. From what I recall it has more to do with the trades that involve two teams absorbing the salary of player traded to a third team...not something that typically happens.

Fox comes with nearly ten million dollar cap hit. If his contract was expiring it would be a no-brainer.
Fox also has a full NMC, which makes trading him even more difficult. I see almost no shot he gets moved.

The names I'm watching: Trocheck, Carrick, Othmann, Schneider. I expect the first three will be gone, we'll see on Schneider (doubt they'll get much of anything for Othmann - another wasted first round pick).

Three changes in the new CBA that the league moved up to start this season (which the GM's are angry about saying the changes going into effect for this season was dropped on them last minute just before the season started):

1. There is now a de facto playoff salary cap. So, no more BS where you can have a guy sit out the regular season on LTIR, add a player with the same cap hit as the player who sits out the regular season, and then bring the "injured player" back for the playoffs without any salary cap implications or restrictions. It's a move Vegas and Colorado have used a lot. The new de facto playoff salary cap says teams must submit a 20-player game-day lineup whose "averaged club salary" is under the "upper limit" of the regular-season salary cap for that team.

2. LTIR rules were changed so teams could only replace an injured player's salary up to the previous season's average league salary, rather than replace his full salary cap hit. The only way to utilize the full salary cap space was to declare that injured player out for the regular season and the entirety of the playoffs.

Dallas just did this with Seguin. They had been using $3.82 million of Seguin's $9.85 million in salary cap relief. After declaring him out for the season (including the playoffs), now they can use the full amount.

3. The new CBA limited trades with "double retention" on a player's salary, in which two different teams retain a percentage of a player's cap hit to facilitate that player ending up with a third team. The new rule states there needs to be 75 regular-season days between trades in which that player's salary is retained, making them logistically unreasonable at the deadline.

Personally, I love the first two rules. I think teams totally took advantage of LTIR and the no salary cap in the playoff's "loopholes".

I hate the third rule, to me that's a trade. The "third team" coming in to retain a % of a player's cap hit gets compensated for doing so. The team that is trying to fit the player in under the cap is giving up something of value to get the "third team" to retain some cap hit. This rule screams of the NHL once again being WAY TOO restrictive with their cap rules, and I always say it really hurts the game, and makes it very difficult for teams to stay together over time. It limits flexibility and essentially is saying a team cannot give up assets/receive assets to retain a % of cap hit to facilitate a trade. That is overly restrictive and will prevent additional trades from happening.

Unless the offer is huge for Trochek, there is no reason to trade him. He's on a good contract. They can always wait until the off-season. Miller I would dump in a second. He's acting like a bitch. Gavrikov is a top pairing defenseman. If he wants out he's another guy who you should get a huge return for.

Seems like GM’s are lowballing Drury so he should tell them to fuck off and don’t make a deal if it doesn’t make sense.

Agree. The package that was reportedly offered by Minnesota (their first and final) didn't seem to be strong at all. Other teams may be interested though. still time.

No doubt on Trocheck, grand slam HR or you don't trade him. My guess is he'll be gone for sure though, I cannot see Drury sending a letter and then essentially doing nothing outside of trading the UFA's to be Soucy and Panarin (maybe Carrick).

This is an oxymoron, but I hope Drury is smart here and doesn't take a lesser deal just to make a trade. If still here, Trocheck absolutely is an asset, with a great contract. You can keep him moving forward, or try again to trade him this summer, either of those options are way better than taking a lesser deal now.

Miller is out now, and I don't see Gavrikov getting traded, it would be counterproductive to do so IMO. I think it's a small group of 2 or 3 guys who may get traded. What I'll be watching to see is if any guys get scratched tonight for roster management. It would be very odd to play Trocheck (or Carrick to a much lesser extent) tonight if Drury feels strongly, he'll trade him tomorrow, or if you are reasonably close on a deal. Tonight's lineup may give us some insight into tomorrow (assuming no deals are done today).

I do believe there is a very high likelihood Trocheck gets traded. Reading the tea leaves, I'd be surprised if he doesn't get dealt. Trocheck is the # 1 player available at the DL, with a great contract for 3 more seasons, which only adds to his value. If awful terrible Drury cannot turn that into a major return, he's even worse than I know he is, which is a big statement.

I would want a 2nd round pick for Carrick. He's a great 4th line center and has become a very good faceoff guy. Less than a 2nd rounder simply isn't good enough.

I don't disagree, but I believe they'll get a 3rd round pick and/or a mid-level type prospect for Carrick. I think he'll be gone by tomorrow for sure also.

Prices seem pretty high as usual:

Toronto traded Nicholas Roy to Colorado for a conditional first-round draft choice in 2027 and a conditional fifth-round pick in 2026.

If the Avalanche's first-round choice is top 10 in the 2027 draft, Colorado will send its unprotected 2028 first-round pick to Toronto. The Avalanche, who have three fifth-round selections in 2026, will send the lowest of those picks to the Leafs.

Chicago traded Jason Dickinson and Colton Dach to Edmonton for Andrew Mangiapane and a conditional 2027 first-round pick.

If Edmonton's 2027 1st round pick is in the Top 12, Edmonton may choose to transfer their 2028 1st round pick to Chicago instead (to be declared prior to the commencement of the 2027 NHL draft). Should Edmonton choose to trade their 2028 1st round pick prior to the 2027 NHL trade deadline, the 2028 1st round pick will automatically transfer to Chicago unconditionally.

That's a lot for 3rd/4th line type players. Drury should be able to get some good returns you would hope. With that said, I have read a few articles stating Drury is not happy with the offers he is getting for Trocheck, and Drury feels no pressure to deal him as he's signed for 3 more seasons.

Acceptable. Would have liked a second but those picks could be used to move up in the first or second rounds if needed.

Just like I said, Trocheck and Carrick would not be in the lineup last night and played their last games as Rangers Tuesday night AND Drury would get a 3rd for Carrick...:).

Looking forward to seeing what awful terrible Drury gets for Trocheck today, it better be a grand slam HR return package as the # 1 player available at the DL, AND he's the exact type of player a team wants in the playoffs, AND he's one of the best FO men in the NHL, AND he's signed for 3 more seasons, which means 4 playoff runs for the team acquiring him.

It must be a huge return for Trocheck, even awful terrible Drury cannot F this one up!!

When the dust settles, it appears the only non-UFA to be awful terrible Drury will trade is Trocheck, sort of uninspiring and underwhelming if you ask me, also the easy way out with no creativity as usual. If he gets a major return for Trocheck it will soften the blow though.

Interesting to see the Caps punt on their season considering they aren't too far out of a WC spot, traded Carlson, who has been a mainstay in DC for a very long time. Curious to see what OV does this summer as a UFA.

BTW, the Kings have fallen apart and most likely are not going to make the playoffs unless they get hot. Which means it will be a Greentree and a 2026 third round pick for Panarin (better of LA or DAL 3rd round pick).

In the 2026 draft, the Rangers currently have two first round picks, one second round pick, and FOUR third round picks. You would like to think Drury could package those third-round picks into something more valuable, no way they make four third round picks you wouldn't think.

I like Kartye a lot. Seattle made a mistake letting him go. In one game he already showed me he has what it takes to be an outstanding 4th liner. He also brings speed. I've touted Laba for a long time but his skill is 4th line from what I see right now. He's good on draws as a rookie which is rare. Sykora much like Kartye is a pain in the ass to play against. His game has improved all around for a shitty Pack team. I see the 4th line as Kartye-Laba-Sykora. This will bring speed to our team. They should also draw a shit load of penalties. They aren't a big 4th line. I like Edstrom but the fucking guy is never healthy. If he stays healthy maybe Sykora moves to a 3rd line role. Rempe is basically only needed if you have opposing goon problems.

I'd say Thomas is the #1 player available at the DL but Trochek is right near the top. Sounds like Minn is out on him so I'd think either Detroit or maybe Buffalo.

Approaching the deadline....I wouldn't be disappointed at all if the Rangers kept Trocheck...for a team that basically has an empty cupboard when it comes to the C position, keeping him on the team is fine by me!

Nope. Guerin is a Devils scumbag. Fuck him. Pay or enjoy losing in the first round as always.

I'll just say this, I absolutely would rather no deal than a bad deal, let's get that clear on the record upfront so there's no confusion. With that said, Drury sent a letter to Ranger fans saying the team is rebooting and then proceeded to do essentially nothing. All he did was trade away two UFA's to be, and one guy with one season remaining making $1M per, which to me is akin to doing essentially nothing.

We got one prospect, Greentree - we'll see how he does, and nothing else. No first-round picks added, and no second-round picks added.

Trocheck was very clearly the best available player at the DL, and it isn't even close, like not in the same stratosphere when you look at all the factors. Not only is he the exact type of player playoff teams covet, but his cap hit is also $2.5M less per season, and Trocheck only has a limited NTC (down to only 6 teams his last two seasons) while Thomas has a full NTC for 4 more seasons after this season and a 15 team NTC clause for the 2030-2031 season. That's FIVE more seasons remaining on his contract with a full or a 15 team NTC, that is a lot of risk with an $8.125M cap hit. So, it isn't even close, Trocheck was the best by far.

This ONCE AGAIN shows Drury is inept at getting things done. That's the takeaway here. DRURY'S JOB IS TO IMPROVE THE TEAM AND WORK WITH OTHER PRES/GM'S TO DO SO. He is so inept, he is incapable of making great trades. The guy is terrible and awful, and once again we see that very clearly. It is beyond bad now, he is so terribly horrific it's shameful.

At this point unless you are related to Drury, or Drury has compromising photos on you, I don't see how anyone can possibly defend this guy and how he has destroyed this organization. It's truly an embarrassment he still has a job.

BTW, I heard a stat that 37.5% of the players in the NHL have some sort of NTC or NMC in their contract. As I have said over and over again, anyone who lazily says oh the Rangers should stop giving out clauses, is epically missing the boat. This is NOT a NYR issue, it is a league wide NHL issue that will not change or be stopped until the Pres' and/or GMs around the league say enough.

The only result that will come from one or two random teams saying we aren't giving out clauses anymore is that team (or teams) will not get the best players. The players will continue to sign/re-sign with teams that give them control and location certainty for them and their families.

The LEAGUE needs to say enough is enough, or as it has been, the 37.5% will continue to go up. It has to stop, as it's also hurting trading from what I heard a lot today. The NHL has become a WAY TOO restrictive league, from a ridiculously restrictive hard cap to overly restrictive rules, to way too many players having clauses in their deals. It is all hurting the leagues growth and popularity IMO.
