I don't think we can replace a shooter with a non-shooter. Jimmy B. worked for the Heat because of all their shooters. Plus, if we're replacing CJ, I want a REALLY GREAT defender.

I actually think Philly might go for this (even if Olshey wouldn't) just because they've proved they're all-in by getting Doc Rivers, so money's no object. They could then follow it up with this:

Ben Simmons would never need to take another shot (which might suit him fine).

I’m not sure there is a player in this draft worth trading up for. None of them are gonna put Portland over the top.

Agreed. Portland is not anywhere close to contending.
We need to add a Top 25 player (all-star level) player to even get close to contending.
Only adding a Top 5 player in the league would put Portland 'over the top'.

Meh... There are a couple who could be worth trading up for. It depends upon who the target is & acquisition cost.

I didn’t say that. A team doesn’t accidentally get to the conference finals. My point was more so that this draft class doesn’t have any real impact players, at least not for Portland.
 
What the Blazers need is an influx of talent. Is the 16th pick going to get us that? Then trade up or out. Treading water isn't going to get it done!

Never insinuated that you stated that.... I just agreed with you that none of the players in this draft will put Portland over the top.

My point was that Portland isn't close to contending. To act as if they were, would be foolish... They need a lot more talent regardless of where it comes from - even if it means trading up in the draft.

I think Toppin is a player that could have a serious impact on our team. He's seen as NBA ready, he plays both ends of the court and he plays both forward positions and that's an area of need for us. Hayes would also be interesting for us. He's a big PG who had success at the highest levels of euro ball last season. He checks all of the boxes and if he is ready to play in the NBA (it's hard to know that with young euros) he would be our perfect backup PG.

If we projected Hayes as an immediate contributor then my favorite theoretical move would be even better. We could do the CJ and Ariza for Richardson, Harris and the 21st pick deal. Then we could trade the two first rounders, Ant and maybe future draft considerations to move up and get Hayes. Hayes can shoot the three, run offenses and defend both guard positions at the euro league level... if he could do that at the NBA level he'd be perfect for us playing next to Dame, Gary or Richardson in the back court. That would give us a rotation of Dame, Gary, Richardson, Harris, Nurk, Zach, Ariza, MLE, Hayes. That's a lot of guys (assuming we got someone versatile with the MLE) that can play multiple positions. I don't think we would lose offensive potency, we would be worlds better defensively and actually have a really decent bench especially if Little and Wenyen made progress we'd then be extremely deep.

We would have a worse shooting team, wed have nobody that could consistently create a shot for themselves outside of Dame, and you listed us as having Ariza after you said we'd trade him to Philly. We'd give up future 1sts just to live laterally while eliminating any familiarity left on players on the roster.

You're also overating Hayes. He has absolutely no off-hand and his 3p shot is definitely questionable. Without the 3pt shot, he's not getting into the paint either. He's not ready to play on a contending team next year.

I put Ariza when I meant Hoodie in that rotation. My bad. I know that Hayes isn't a sure thing but I think he might be really good from everything I've seen. If Hayes isn't projected by our scouting team to be worth going up for then we just draft BPA at 16 and 21 or look for someone to drop and move up using other available draft assets. Then we would target a legit backup PG with at least part of the MLE. I think we've seen that although he's best as a spot up shooter and slasher that Richardson can get his own shot but not close to as well as the other guy coming in that trade. When getting the ball on the wing or the low post Harris can get his own shot, he's really good at it. He has a turnaround jumper, he has a face up game where he blows by defenders especially bigger PFs or rises above smaller defenders with a nice jumper, he can back people down with his lower center of gravity... the guy gets buckets. Both of the guy in the trade shoot the open three very well, so does Gary, Hoodie and hopefully at least one of our young prospects (Little, Zach or Wenyen) develops in that area. Having guys like CJ capable enough to think they're always great at "getting their own shot" is overrated, it just empowers less effective players to dominate the ball when they have a more effective player to pass to. You don't need a bunch of iso threats as much as an offense that works together. Both Richardson and Harris move better without the ball than CJ does which works when you have facilitators and willing passers like Dame, Nurk and either an MLE backup PG or Hayes if he grades out. As far as familiarity goes why is that important and how would we not have that? Three of the projected starters would have been on the team the season before and four bench guys will be returning Blazers. Did a lack of familiarity hamper the Heat? I think when you have a strong leader like Dame you can move the pieces around and have team chemistry. Right now familiarity looks like guys feeling they can inefficiently iso without repercussions and play bad/lazy defense without accountability.

October 19, Zach becomes extension eligible.

As part of the revised Collective Bargaining Agreement terms that the NBA and NBPA have agreed to, a series of option decision deadlines, salary guarantee dates, and other offseason dates and deadlines have been pushed back.

We don’t yet have a full list that outlines how every date and deadline will be adjusted, but in cases where a deadline fell slightly before or after the start of the 2020/21 league year, those dates have been pushed back to coincide with the new start date for the league year, which will begin on October 19 rather than July 1.

I wanted to like both of your posts because I do agree with them but I hate that I agree with them so I can't in good conscience like them but you're both very accurate in pointing these things out. I imagine by now the league has decided to terminate the CBA but that could just be my imagination. If they do rip up the CBA then the league year won't start until the new one is ratified. I also kind of think that they might announce that they are going to terminate the old CBA and already have an agreement on a new one with the NBAPA on the same day because I'm betting that the league and the NBAPA have been negotiating since the bubble was agreed to otherwise why would the NBAPA keep giving the league more and more time to decide whether or not they will terminate the CBA under force majeure?
