Mike Bibby and the Washington Wizards have agreed to terms on a buyout, according to league sources.

In a stunning move, Bibby, whom the Wizards acquired from Atlanta last week in a trade for Kirk Hinrich, gave up his entire salary for next season, sources said. The 32-year-old point guard had one year and $6.2 million left on his deal.

Bibby is eager to sign with a title-contending team after clearing waivers, and sources say the Boston Celtics, Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers are interested in him.

For Washington, the deal is a sweetheart one that will knock next season's payroll down to roughly $38 million, which is $20 million below the current salary cap.

He would be a good pickup for us if can get him. He can make the outside shot.

bibby might wanna rethink us.....

we arent even a lock for playoffs

Bibby's ancient. ANCIENT. I'm worried his walker would hurt LMA's knees when they run the pick and roll.

Mike Bibby expected to join Heat, reports my pal @sam_amick. But I don't expect Bibby to be much of an improvement over Arroyo at this stage

Bibby giving up that much money is madness.

The Atlanta broadcasters noted that he was let go (essentially) because he provided no direction or leadership. He had the talent, but was a train wreck on the court. Made me think.

Who gives a shit. I don't really care if he thinks he is coming to a contender, and just ends up making us happy that we never see Patty or Armon play PG again the rest of the eyar. His problem, not mine.

Sounds like the Heat are the likely destination, but I'd bet that his agent is trying to get some sort of an agreement on a longer term deal next summer.

How is it even possible under the CBA? Why in the world would the union allow him to do that? Madness, indeed.

Maybe he's assuming there'll be a lockout next year, and he wouldn't see any of that money anyways?

CBA allows you to work a buyout for any amount you want.

Bingo!

Player who has earned close to $100mil for his career and presumably has a little tucked away for the future.

Player who has noticed the NBA headed for a near certain, likely lengthy lockout, which would wipe out much of the $6mil.

Player who sees an opportunity to relocate with a team that has a shot at a ring this season.

= good move by Player

Ah. Atlanta still takes the cap hit, though, right?

Whatever the buy-out amount is, it goes on the Hawks' team salary. If Miller really walked from the entire amount he's due without any compensation from Atlanta, his old salary comes completely off their books.

Not Atlanta, Washington. Assuming that's what you meant.

I've never seen you turn tail and run before. Fries burning?

I did look this up, though, and you are right (meaning I was wrong, which I'll freely admit). http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#Q63

The agreed-upon buy-out amount is included in the team salary instead of the salary called for in the contract. If the player had more than one season left on his contract, then the buy-out money is distributed among those seasons in proportion to the original salary.

PapaG's not on the board right now!! We don't have to behave!!

I think it's a pretty big stretch to think that existing contracts will be nullified.

I find it much more likely for players to be facing hard caps that will ensure he doesn't see another $6m/year contract again... and perhaps be lucky to make half of that, especially if he loses a year of his career to a lockout.

Hence, he should have hung onto the money while he had the chance IMO.

The contracts won't be nullified, but the players will only get paid for the number of games they play. Since the lockout may dramatically reduce the number of games played, the actual amount of money he's giving up may not be as much as it initially looks like.

Steve Francis was an expensive little fucker. Notice he never go resigned after the 2008 season.

I don't see Patty Mills or Armon being cut for Bibby. Bibby would cost too much.
