I get the concept. Let's rephrase:
"Here in America, you need to show ID to purchase everything from beer to weaponry to cigarettes to prescription drugs to a vehicle. If you pay with a check you get carded. In many cases if you use a credit card you have to show ID. And yet, in almost literally the only chance the populace has to regulate their government officials, ID showing proof of citizenship is not required. I guess banks and stores care more about their $$, and governments care more about their ability to tax, than many Americans care about who is governing them."
