TSN Reporting Lundqvist Signs Extension

This is good for us. I wanted around 8 mill or so, and this falls pretty much in line with that. Can't complain. 7 years also instead of 8, which I like as well.

Good deal. Now move onto Cally. And kick the tires on Girardi.

Just glad he's signed. $8.5M is still a lot of money and cap hit, but he's a key part of this team.

Yeah it definitely is a big hit, but there were people throwing out numbers of 9, 9.5 or 10. I was like Chuck, I was iffy once the hit went over 8 but at the end of the day .5m is not going to make or break our cap. Especially with the cap going up soon. Good deal, now he can focus on hockey and hopefully Sather can turn his attention to getting some O here

It is a lot, and I would have liked lower 8's better, but I can't complain over 300 or 400 K extra. I think 8 was always the bar this was set at, so 8.5 isn't terrible considering that. Now we just need to hope the cap goes up a reasonable amount.

Hank does have a 1.5 mill higher cap hit than any other goalie though. So he better be a stud for many more years to earn that.

that is a concern of mine.

He'll be 32 in March, so i don't see him being this productive in his late 30's, who knows. Then again, by the time he's in the last years of his contract i'm sure other goalies will have surpassed him in $'s.

To me the timing of this is horrible....im not saying Hank isn't one of the best goalies in the league, but to give him 1.5 more than the next goalie without knowing if the system in place in the years before him helped his stats are not. is he THAT much better than the next goalie?

13.92% of the cap tied up to Hank...the next is raask at10.89% that is almost 2 million dollars tied up in cap space...

and rask is 5 years younger...

hope we do not regret this

1. I am sure they have some idea what the cap situation will be next season. Same reason the Pens went crazy to sign their big guys to huge deals.
2. I am sure years 6 & 7 will be a little troublesome at 37 or so, but we should get at least 4 or 5 top years out of him on this new deal, barring injury. So you may pay for all the great years he has given us in the last two years of this deal. Just the way it is.
3. Remember he already has a cap hit of 6.875. So this is only a raise of 1.625 mill or so. Not awful really.

This is really the best we could have asked for IMO. Like I said, maybe 300 or 400 K less, but he was always going to be around 8 at least given how this was playing out.

we all love to get raises but im afraid that their wont be any increase in output. then again you can say that about all pro contracts...you definitely are paying for past production and not necessarily future production.

do hope with the recent increase in TV revenue from Canada that the cap will go up making this raise a mute point

Can't compare Hank contract to Rask.....Hank was a UFA in July, Rask when he signed was an RFA.

This isnt a bad contract, it's the cost of doing business for having the best goalie in the game the past 4-5 years. 8.5 is a big cap hit but really what did people expect when the best goalie in the world (at least before this year) hits the market at 32.

Be glad it wasnt $10m and a 8+ year deal

Now go fix the offense Slats

Ridiculous amount of money for a guy with a losing record in the playoffs and is likely nearing his peak as an athlete.........................

From a fan of a team that loses every UFA whose contract is up

How is the Ryan Clowe contract working out

Why do you always insist on bringing the Devils into it? Can't you be objective about the Rangers without comparing them to the Devils???????????

From what I can see they are doing as well or better than the Rangers. But Let me know when the Brad Richards very expensive experiment is over or when Rick Nash stops coasting. Big guy with a soft head, like Lindros but without balls.

You are hardly being objective pointing to Hank's playoff record when this team hasnt been able to score forever.

He is a top 3 goalie (at worst) in the NHL. I dont see how you dispute this. If you want to say the deal is too long (debatable) fine. But he is by far the best goalie on the market July 1 and one of the best free agents in the NHL.

Forgive me if I find it funny of fans of other franchises who cannot for the life of them resign ANY of their own existing UFA's tell us we overpaid for resigning a star.

My advice is worry about your own team. Richards will be bought out this summer. And Hank is one of the best goalies in the NHL. Your team has no future, so you worry about that instead of AGAIN concerning yourself with a team all Devil fans claim they don't care about, yet spend a lot of time discussing...LOL.

Even if he goes into decline in 3 years he'll still be a top 10 goalie until hes almost 40.

I have to say that was a well written reply by danipman...I know im going to get killed for this one..but he makes valid points.

8.5 is better than the 9 or 10 I was worrying about. This is what the market would pay him as ufa so if you want him you need to buck up as they say and I'm glad the rangers did. Now if Cam continues to impress we have a young trade chip at a position some of the better teams are lacking in and may trade for. With the canada money coming in hard to see how cap doesn't go up exponentially which will water this figure down a little bit. Glad that is a big player for us that is taken care of. Hopefully slats hasn't pulled the trigger on anything due to working on this. Now deal is done so glenny boy lets make some deals get some size and another scorer at forward in here and bring up big mac so our skill players are looking over their shoulders less.

So if scoring is the reason Lundquist cant win in the playoffs, then maybe they should have obtained some more scoring instead. I know you guys spend alot of time here, but you may not have noticed that the NHL is changing to a game where goal tending is not quite as important as it was. Puck possession is the key to the game now.

And while I agree Lundquist is one of the best goalies, he's not been able to win the games that really count, as evidenced by his playoff record. If its 2-1 or 1-0 you need to win those games if your team has no offense. Other goalies have.

In a way the Rangers might be better off trading Lundquist in the long run. Since the draft picks from the lean sub 80 point 7 years have yielded modest but probably not championship talent, recent UFA bolt ons (Richards, Nash) not having near the desired impact, especially in the playoffs, and a solid defense without really any offensive skills, the Rangers are starting to look like a team moving towards perhaps another "somewhere around .500 team" for the next few years. Definitely missing Torts in the effort department, now your stuck with AV. There doesnt seem like much help in the pipeline, maybe trading for some really good young players makes sense.

Cam Talbot looks pretty good, and really , how many games difference would there be between Hank and another above average goalie? And if Lundquist cant win with all the shot blocking and defensive collapsing, is he going to win with a looser team strategy that isnt generating any more offense? I'm sure you arent thinking Stanley Cup this year.

I like your comment about the Devils not keeping UFA, but other than Rafalski, who else did they really not be bale to sign? Parise, Niedermayer left for personal reason. Holik and Gomez, well that joke is on you. Probably still paying them.

Sather definitely should have gotten more offense under Torts especially 2 years ago when we were the #1 seed. I dont think there is any way to dispute that and we were all very vocal on the old board about that.

Lundqvist has not been and isnt the problem with this team. I am not going to waste time defending him. 7/59 might be a little high but the guy has earned it and if he wanted to leave NY in July another team would offer him more. He is very durable and has excelled here for a long time.

I guess the point of your post is that Sather hasnt gotten enough offense. Cant argue that. Nash wasnt a UFA, he came in trade and we lost signifcant pieces. I am still high on Nash though. Time will tell.

Regarding Devil UFA's, its not so much about not signing them its the fact you lost them and got NOTHING in return

Parise
Niedermayer
Rafalski
Gomez
Clarkson

I am not saying ANY of them were worth the contracts they got but to lose ALL of them and not get a single draft pick back is called being a poor GM.

As Chuck said, worry about your own team. We dont go on Hoopla and bash Lou for not doing much since the lockout

The onus is on mgmt.to put together the right roster around Lundqvist so they can average more than 1.7g per game. Thats where GS has failed in constructing things. Then you have a top 3 goalie on top of it, instead of having to patch it together with FA goalies. Talbot has been very good so far but whether hes a long term nhl starter is unknown. How about getting a gm that isnt lazy 10mos of the year?

That's about the only part about Danipman's post that is accurate and makes sense. The rest is just stupidity.

disagree..the fact is we are a 500 team and if status quo continues we will be fighting for the last 2 playoff seeds..which does nothing...one of the reasons this team has never built a huge winner is because the drafting as been mid round almost every year. Not to say we have to throw seasons away, but it only makes it harder drafting the best 10th player every year.
so....having one of the best goalies on the team when your fighting for that last spot doesn't do shit this year or the future.

What should the Rangers have done Danip? Rask set the market at $7m a year as an RFA. What is fair value for Lundqvist? If you are going to bash the Rangers for signing him please tell me his worth on the open market. You brought up Hanks playoff losing record but anyone who has watched this team closely since the lockout knows he was the only reason this team has made the playoffs. 7/59 I think is a fair deal for both sides. Curous what you thought Sather should do

BTW here is Rangers goal scoring per game under Torts in the playoffs:

1.57
1.60
2.15
2.17

Yeah its Hank's fault they havent won a Cup

in clownspeak:

See, the offense improved every year and Henrik still couldn't win a Cup. He's mediocre.

If Rask set the mark at 7M, then 7M or less. Rask is younger, has a Cup. HE should have given the Rangers a break, to help get some players signed, like Broduer did. He'll be 39 in his last year of the contract at 8.5Mil?

He gets 8.5 if he won the Cup already and even then its too much. Like I said, the goaltender is important, but teams need to score even more to win in the NHL now.

Dont get me wrong, I think he's a great player, but 8.5 mil in goal is waaaay too much. I know you love him and the team plays him up b/c he is the most talented player on the team by far.

Actually I'm shocked he signed. I thought for sure he would go to San Jose or Pitt or Detroit. Somewhere with some offensive talent so he doesnt have to stop every single puck to win. I just dont see the Rangers contending for quite some time and I think a guy as talented should have a chance to win the Cup at least once

Rask has a cup but didnt win a single playoff game that year, Tim Thomas was goalie during thier cup run. For comparison sake Rask's cup is meaningless because he didnt appear in a single playoff game.

If you want to tell me they should have signed him for $7.5, what real difference does it make...

Even though Rask is very good and will likley win the Vezina, Lundqvist has accomplished more as a goalie than Rask and its not like he is 35.

There are problems with the Rangers but this deal for Hank at 7/59 is not one of them

Losing him for NOTHING in July would be devestating to this franchise.

Among goalies with at least as many post season games as him, Henrik is second ALL TIME in playoff save percentage. This playoff stuff is such nonsense I can't stand it.

Yes, it definitely is. And trolls like Danipman are unable to let it go.

Heck, if it wasn't for Torts maybe we would have won a Cup already. The team entered the playoffs dog tired and bruised from blocking shots for 82gms and couldn't hold it for another 16 wins. When we went to the ECF's, remember how many teams we had to come from behind in the playoffs? we'd go down 2-0 seemingly almost every game, and when we were down Torts would loosen up the reigns and the team would play awesome and come back, then when tied or taking the lead Torts would have them collapse again. It was infuriating.
