Day 220: Ukraine applies for fast-track NATO membership. Russia annexed occupied Ukrainian territories. A deadly attack on a humanitarian convoy in Zaporizhzhia kills 30, injures 88. Russian missile attacks kill civilians in Mykolaiv and Dnipro. Zelensky holds Security Council. Ukraine applies for NATO membership. NATO’s Stoltenberg promises unending support to Ukraine, says NATO is not a part “of this conflict.” The US prepares a new sanctions package. Russian invaders abduct the director of Zaporizhzhia NPP. Lithuania acquires kamikaze drones for Ukraine.

Turkey and China after refusing to criticize Putin are now distancing themselves from Russia and condemning the annexation of Ukranian territories...UN pressures are working

Not sure how the nut as lasted so long w/o being knocked off.
The only way to deal with a guy like this is to take him out before he does something with nukes. And, I think he will unfortunately as he's been trained not to give in but to escalate.

Ukraine has retaken the city of Lyman, russians in retreat, will be many dead and captured.
From what i am reading , it appears russians are running from Lyman and trying to get east to Kremmina but are under heavy artillery fire all the way; and if they try to get out of the fire zone, Ukrainian infantry is waiting to finish them off. A horrendous blood bath. Ukrainians don't have the time or resources to stop and tend to the wounded so they are dying where they lay in the woods. I don't know why russians don't surrender, Ukraine has been announcing ways to surrender on loudspeakers and by leafletting.

If I were a Russian and couldn't get out I'd definitely defect and switch sides. Of course, that might put my family at risk...

Day 221. The Ukrainian army liberates Lyman. Ukrainian troops are continuing to conduct counteroffensive operations in Kherson Oblast and setting conditions for future advances. Russian forces conducted ground attacks in the Bakhmut and Avdiivka areas of Donetsk Oblast. The Russian army launched 4 missiles, 16 air strikes, carried out more than 75 rounds of anti-aircraft fire at military and civilian objects on the territory of Ukraine and used the Iranian-made “Shahid-136” unmanned aerial vehicle for attacks on infrastructure facilities. More than 30 settlements were damaged by the Russian strikes. Russia is likely setting conditions to assume legal responsibility for the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP). A gas pipeline between Greece and Bulgaria started operating. Germany forms an international group to investigate explosions on the branches of the Nord Stream. The US law on lend-lease for Ukraine comes into force. Ukraine will be supplied with tanks and armored vehicles, artillery systems, air defense systems, anti-ship missiles, and combat aircraft. France is preparing to transfer a new batch of Caesar self-propelled guns to Ukraine. The next delivery can include 6-12 howitzers. German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht arrived in Odesa on an unannounced visit

Unfortunately most of the Russians were able to retreat from Lyman before getting completely encircled and killed, but it's good they're retreating at any rate.

It sounds like the Russian line collapsed in the Northeast of Kherson and Ukrainians are moving down the Dnipro River towards Dudchany, which could end up being a pretty significant development.

So if Ukraine takes back the area Putin annexed will Putin say Russia has been invaded? Is that his plan?

Yes. In my opinion, that is exactly what he is doing. He will use it to justify some kind of level of force escalation

Day 222. Ukrainian forces continued to liberate settlements east and northeast of Lyman and have liberated Torske in Donetsk Oblast. Russian sources claimed that Russian forces withdrew from their positions northeast of Lyman, likely to positions around Kreminna and along the R66 Svatove-Kreminna highway. Ukrainian forces continued to advance on settlements east of Kupyansk and have liberated Kisharivka in Kharkiv Oblast. Russian forces continued to launch unsuccessful assaults in the Donetsk Oblast. Ukrainian forces resumed counteroffensives in northern Kherson Oblast. Russian forces continued to target Kryvyi Rih and Mykolaiv Oblast with Iranian-made Shahed-136 drones. IAEA head seeks release of Ukrainian nuclear plant head. Germany, Denmark, and Norway to deliver 16 howitzers to Ukraine.

I had to look up the meaning of Oblast. For some on here who are less knowledgeable. An Oblast is an area or Division of an area. A “Precinct” or maybe a “County” in our terms.

If you all already knew that well now I know too.

Noam Chomsky & Vijay Prashad on Ukraine, Why U.S. Must Negotiate with Russia & What Media Gets Wrong

Fuck negotiating with Russia. The US might need to negotiate with Russia on some issue or other but not Ukraine.

Ukraine is the only one with the right to negotiate their future.

When Ukraine is ready to negotiate I'll support negotiations. As long as Ukraine is interested in expelling Russia I'll support expelling Russia.

Regarding climate change, the US should be putting tarrifs on carbon (and other harmful pollution) intensive products (after ending subsidies for these same items) and distributing a dividend to the poor and middle class to offset.

These are not mutually exclusive ideas. Allowing Russia to expand and take Ukraine is not beneficial to efforts to limit climate change.

Yeah I can think of a number of ways Russia could help deter climate change that would be a bunch more effective without a hostile takeover of a border country.

Nice to see those three in the same photo. Like allies.....

Ah, I see. Discount his word because you believe that Noam is a Putin ally.

This is a typical tactic. Paint dissenters as allies of the enemy. Hilarious.

While one part of me wants to see that, another part thinks that may be complicated. How would NATO handle the current hot war between Ukraine and Russia and how would they handle Russian takeover of Ukrainian sovereign territory?

All this and the United States has the okay to give Ukraine another $17 Billion in aid. I wish we had a $100 Billion to give.
