I agree: this should be the top story of the week. We all become numb to the outrages committed by the terrorist russian state.

Definitely an increase in hostilities yesterday; besides the 650 Orcs gone, Ukraine took out a lot of russian artillery. Ukraine has also hit several refinery tanks all over russia in the last few days, mostly with drones. Most likely in preparation for their counter offensive.

This is concerning. And if you follow some of the wild statements byy Medvedev, you might agree.

Not sure how NATO thinks Putin is different than an armed terrorist killing thousands, and that he eventually will pull out or he will be crumble from within.

Unfortunately Russia has no choice, in their minds. They are dying as a country. From their perspective this is the only way for them to maintain control.

Putin is the father of all this...I doubt if the majority of Russian citizens secretly approve of this war.

But sadly, in their country, "Free Speech" is pretty much nonexistent and the news media is not factual/credible...not unlike Fox News. :bgrin:

Ukraine war: 'Mad panic' as Russia evacuates town near Zaporizhzhia plant

Russia has sparked a "mad panic" as it evacuates a town near the contested Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, a Ukrainian official says.

Russia has told people to leave 18 settlements in the Zaporizhzhia region, including Enerhodar near the plant, ahead of Kyiv's anticipated offensive.

The Ukrainian mayor of Melitopol, Ivan Fedorov, said there were five-hour waits as thousands of cars left.

The UN's nuclear watchdog warned a "severe nuclear accident" could occur.

Speaking to the BBC's Newshour programme Rafael Grossi - the director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) - said the evacuation of residents near the nuclear plant indicated the possibility of heavy fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces around the plant.

Although the plant's reactors were not producing electricity they were still loaded with nuclear material, he said.

Mr Grossi added that he had had to travel through a minefield when he visited the plant a few weeks ago.

Earlier, the IAEA warned in a statement that situation at the Zaporizhzhia plant was "becoming increasingly unpredictable and potentially dangerous".

Operating staff were still at the site but there was "deep concern about the increasingly tense, stressful, and challenging conditions for personnel and their families".

It said IAEA experts at the plant had "received information that the announced evacuation of residents from the nearby town of Enerhodar - where most plant staff live - has started".

On Friday, the Russian-installed regional head Yevgeny Balitsky said that "in the past few days, the enemy has stepped up shelling of settlements close to the front line".

"I have therefore made a decision to evacuate first of all children and parents, elderly people, disabled people and hospital patients," he wrote on social media. .

The IAEA has issued warnings previously about safety at the plant - which Russia captured in the opening days of its invasion last year - after shelling caused temporary power cuts.

In March the IAEA warned the plant was running on diesel generators to keep vital cooling systems going, after damage to power lines.

Since Russia launched its invasion in February 2022 the number of staff at the plant has declined, the IAEA says, "but site management has stated that it has remained sufficient for the safe operation of the plant".

Russian forces occupy much of the Zaporizhzhia region but not the regional capital Zaporizhzhia, which lies just north-east of Enerhodar across the Dnipro reservoir.

On Sunday, the Ukrainian general staff said civilians were being evacuated to the cities of Berdyansk and Prymorsk, further inside Russian-held territory.

The exiled mayor of Melitopol, Ivan Fedorov, wrote on Telegram that shops in the evacuated areas had run out of goods and medicine.

He also said hospitals were discharging patients into the street amid fears that electricity and water supplies could be suspended if Ukraine attacks the region.

And he claimed that two-thirds of evacuation convoys - allegedly made up of civilians - consisted of retreating Russian troops. The BBC cannot verify this claim.

"The partial evacuation they announced is going too fast, and there is a possibility that they may be preparing for provocations and (for that reason) focusing on civilians," Mr Fedorov added.

Loving Ukraine kicking the shit out of Putin's wannabe army.
Still a lot of work to be done. Would be so much easier if Ukraine could have some longer range rockets. russia now stores ammo and supplies and equipment just beyond range of what they have.

Day 439. "Wagner and Kadyrov to start receiving ammunition for continued offensive in Bakhmut. (so they will not be pulling out as they stated two days ago) Russian forces made some territorial gains in Bakhmut. Ukraine launches up to 23 drones at Crimea. Russia forcefully evacuates the population from the occupied parts of Zaporizhzhia Oblast. "
russia attacking cities of Ukraine almost every night, with shells for cities that are close and Iranian drones or missiles for those further away.

How far inside Russia are those supplies and ammo?

A lot of what I am talking about is not inside pre 2014 russia, but talking about the Donbass and Crimea. Ukraine has promised not to use the missiles against targets in russia itself. I believe the rockets they have now have a range of about 50 miles. They are hoping to get rockets with a range of 300 km (about 185 miles) which would be able to reach all parts of Donbass and all of Crimea, even as far as the Kerch Bridge. Britain may be ready to provide these, I will post a link to a WP story that includes this.

Ahhh, OK...the reason I asked is because I was wondering about the feasibility of using drones.

They are using drones with the strikes into Crimea and also some into border areas of russia. Problem with drones is they are quite slow and so easy to shoot down. Ukraine regularly shoots down all the Iranian Shahed drones that russia sends over Ukrainian cities regularly.

This feud with PMC Wagner head Prigozhin is becoming a big deal. Imagine if Douglas McArthur had sponsored a poll showing him also even with Truman? Would have been fired the same day. But of course in russia, it's different. Just yesterday Prigozhin basically called Putin a bumbling grandpa, now this. If Putin could get to Prigozhin he definitely would have him killed. Same for Prigozhin. Prigozhin is actually more hawkish than Putin; I think he would call for all out mobilization and shifting all factories to military production. Putin reluctant to do that because he would lose support from oligarchs and risk a popular uprising.
@anders_aslund
Very interesting. Prigozhin marks his open opposition to Putin. This looks like a life-and-death struggle, as both Putin and Prigozhin usually kill their enemies. The destabilization of Russia looks increasingly likely, or has it already happened with the many partisan attacks?

In Trump's Townhall, which I did not watch, Trump said he'd meet with Zelensky and Putin and solve the war "in one day, 24 hours", wouldn't say if he believed Putin was a war criminal, and wouldn't even say if he wanted Ukraine or Russia to win the war... amazing. Congrats Republicans, this is probably going to be your candidate again, unless you do something about it.

His idea is probably to tell Ukraine he will cut off all military aid unless they cede all land to russia that they currently hold. He still doesn't understand Ukraine. They would tell him to fuck off and keep on fighting with what they have.

This is really big news. for me, more important than F-16s. Ukraine can now strike russian supply and ammo dumps and supply routes that were just out of range previously. Thank you so much Great Britain! They are delivering long range rockets to Ukraine!
"According to MBDA Missile Systems, the European company which manufactures the missile, the Storm Shadow is a “deep strike weapon” capable of “being operated day and night in all weathers,” that features an advanced navigation system to ensure accuracy."

Great! Ship all the fascists, anti semites, homophobes and assorted bigots to Russia. Would greatly improve this country. They can elect Trump dictator for life and ban drag shows even though they won't have any drag performers.
