OT Unemployment......

They voted early and then most of them left, they didn’t stick around to discuss a plan or hear the other side. The Republican speakers kept referencing how there were barely any democrats left in their seating area.

So yes, you are absurdly ill informed on this topic.

There's no such thing as early voting in the senate. You vote when the vote is called (and Republicans control that).

Maybe you don't know, but it's rare for Senators to sit around and listen to each other's speeches on the floor if there's not a vote upcoming.

Legislation isn't crafted on the floor of the senate.

The “slush fund” is just a dirty word the media is spreading ( they all have jobs right now by the way). The aid for businesses. You know, that employ people? Hence the term unemployment. I think a lot of these layed off workers might want a job to go back to after this big scare is over, rather than the empty building their now-bankrupt employer once occupied.
This reminds me a lot of the guy in the video that Sly just displayed. It kind of makes me wonder if you're from Idaho.

Yes, but they are free to use it as they wish. One of the issues is that it is not required that they use this for employee paychecks. That's why the details are important.

It is also not clear what industries will be helped and how much - because the slush fund is going to be secret for a while. It could be routed to some hotel chain or casino operator instead of hospitals or food manufacturers for example - because the people the pull the strings are invested in these operations.

This bill is a massive problem if it is not transparent. That's the problem.

Your point about transparency is fair on a regular day. But when you consider the fact that no bill in the history of bills has ever been transparent, it’s kind of ridiculous to demand it now of all times, in the midst of a crisis when people’s rent and mortgage payments are due in a couple days.

I visited the Senate one time. Senator Grassley was speaking. Except for the gallery there was no one else there just Senator Grassley talking to himself.

Where I work was forced to close in the mandate today, so I guess I'll be applying for temporary unemployment tomorrow based on reduction of hours?
Good luck my friend. A couple of my in-law's work was "temporarily closed" 2 weeks ago, got a call today that they were just closing down / laying off everyone. Hope the outcome for you is better.

Being retired, my wife and I will likely be okay through this thing (despite our Schwab accounts taking a beating). We might even be saving a fair bit by staying home. So the particulars of the relief bill don’t have a huge amount to do with me personally. But I went to take a shower this morning and discovered I needed a new water heater. So if the gub’mint wants to send me a check, that’s fine by me.......

Yeah, I've probably lost about $100,000 but I'm out now or nearly any day now. Got all my investments in bonds right now. All of them.

I think that when the price of the bill is so huge - it really should be done properly - so I guess we disagree on this. If a bill of $10m is non transparent - it is a shame. If it is a bill of $2T - it is a disaster - and the long term ramifications can be a bigger disaster than the one it is trying to solve.

So, imho - this bill needs to be done carefully. The time for expediency was 2 months ago when we had a chance to slow this thing before it became a monster. Now, that it is a monster - we should make sure it is not the kind of monster that eats us alive. Simple as that.

and I want you to remember - that this is not just about transparency. There is no point in this bill if it does not stipulate who it is going to help. We have achieved nothing if a huge portion of this bill goes to the pockets or rich investors or operatives with the hope that it will 'trickle down'. The bill needs to ensure that no employer that gets bailed out is using it for anything other than the workers it is supposed to help.

And if they don't use that money to pay/employ people? If those companies use the money for stock buy-backs? No problem, because at least something was done, even if it was worse than useless?

"Slush fund" isn't a dirty word (or term, more accurately), it's a pretty accurate word since there's no oversight or transparency on the money. It could be used for virtually anything they want, even if that ended up being giving the money to Trump resorts.

I’m not denying the possibility of misappropriation. I never would when politicians on either side are involved. With that being said, doing nothing is not the better option right now. People are going to get hit hard if they don’t get some money real quick, not at the speed of gridlock.

.. Which the current bill does not really guarantee. That's why it is a bad bill.

Never a more important time to clarify and specify than during a crisis. Ambiguity and vagueness leads to chaos in whichever format it lies in.

The bill should read like this.

For the next 90 days no payments shall be made to anyone except for food and water and gasoline.

No mortgages, no rent checks. No power bills no insurance no nothing.

If you wanna freeze the global economy, freeze it.

Well, that $1200 will sure last a long time. I think that Trump and Mnuchin should have only $1200 to live on as long as the rest of us do.

Good tips to get as much from the stimulus plan as possible.

That extra 600 a week for 4 months in addition to unemployment is craaaazy.

I'm a bartender, so obviously I'm screwed for the time being. Everyone at my work was laid off. They're currently doing food and beer to-go, with management/owners running the show, just trying to stay afloat. It's a very successful, locally owned sports bar, but I don't know how long they'll be able to keep the doors open.
I just had a baby boy in January, which changed my perspective on everything in an instant. I have wanted to go back to school for years, so, at 37, I finally took the plunge. My plan was to go for a B.S. in Nursing, and become an R.N. However, the last few weeks, I've been reading anything and everything about COVID19 and other past outbreaks, and I'm obsessed. So instead of Nursing, I'm going to get my Bachelor's in Microbiology and go on to grad school to study epidemiology. Better late than never right? So hopefully this global health crisis will turn out to be a blessing in disguise in some small way for me and my family. That's my story! Hope you are all staying safe and healthy and I can't fucking wait til we can all watch our Blazers again!

A friend of mine who got his PhD in microbiology while I was getting my BS from the same school once told me that you can't do anything in microbiology without a graduate degree. If this is your intent, my advice is to put ALL your effort into getting that degree. Forget this place.

When you get the degree and a big time well paying job, remember the Blazers and your good buddy, Lanny.

The American public can never take things for granted ever again due to this virus and others that will follow. I suppose we should prepare for a future without steady work.
I thought we learned that lesson on 9/11/01!
