No, I don't think any of these 5 senior leaders have been "flipped" and will be double-agents. That's the first thing any competent group would suspect, and they would monitor calls, emails, and the like from any prisoner released back to their custody. Seems logical to me. Maybe you'd just assume that your returned prisoners would be 100% on your side upon return, but I'm just too distrusting and too cynical to not account for that potential deadly error. They should, and will, be watched closely at all times in terms of their communications with anyone outside of their network of Taliban people.

I guess I have a higher opinion of our military's capabilities than you do.

Another funny theory I've been reading is that the US somehow put GPS monitors in these 5 guys. Any military group worth a shit would scan all 5 of these guys through a basic airport full-body scanner, at the very least, to see if there are any inorganic bodies that have been injected in them. Unless, of course, the US has an organic tracking device that nobody on earth has invented yet. Maybe Obama invented it while he was filling out his March Madness bracket?

Also these guys have been out of the "game" for a lot of years. The Taliban they ran is a different organization today. The current leaders will talk with them but aren't going to give up their seats at the table for them.

I chuckle at this talk of Obama covering up, inventing stuff, like he has something. Shit man, he aint but a fuckup in over his head. Did you see him standing by that dad (Bergdahl) chanting the Allah victory chant, Obama with the pleased smile on his face? This fuckup is happy to hear someone praising Allah.

I'm not sure that the Taliban ever makes huge leaps in technology or tactics.

A decent SNL skit would be these guys meeting up with their fellow Taliban members in a cave after 12 years away, and the "modern" Taliban guys mocking the former Gitmo guys for pulling out their StarTac phones, iPod MP3s, and for them wondering how to download music for free on Napster.

A text message then pings on the iPhone of a younger Taliban guy, who doesn't have a beard, who we haven't seen yet in the skit, and who is wearing wearing baggy pants, new Jordans, a Miami Heat flat-bill hat, and an A$AP t-shirt. Then, all hell breaks loose.

Whoever decided to put Obama even 100 miles near that kooky dad should be fired. The talk about the dad growing the beard and learning the language (Arabic, of course, not Pushton, which should raise big flags, but whatever) in order to empathize with his son is absurd.

I'll still say that, he should have been brought back and gone through a trial. If he's found guilty of desertion, then go through with the proper punishment. Trading 5 taliban members, is probably dangerous. I don't think we should have left him there though.
 
If you're ever bored while traveling take the time and read your passport. It lists how you can lose your US citizenship. If Bergdahl did aid or give information to the Taliban after he serves any time given to him in a court marshal he should be stripped of his citizenship and shipped back to Afghanistan.

But remember, he is innocent until proven guilty and that is the reason he should have been brought back home to the USA.

I agree with all of this. Obama was in a tough situation . . . there was all kinds of pressure from the republicans to bring him home, but when Obama does, there is criticism in the manner in which he did it.

Without spending days reading all the facts about it, I think Obama should have gone to congress with the deal and have them sign off on it. If they don't sign off on it, he can say he tried but congress said no.

Problem is I don't think Obama cares what congress or general public thinks of his moves. He is in his second term, not going to run for re-election and will push his authority to the limit. He has an agenda that won't be influenced by popular opinion (like most other president in their 2nd term).

The next president will be a republican . . . not like that is going to be any different for us regular citizen folk.


Of course there is the possibility Obama is like Hitler, makes some kind of declaration that he will remain president forever, start a genocide of white people while overtaking other countries and killing people by the millions.

He's a citizen until that citizenship is stripped through due process.

And he should be sent to Gitmo, not Afghanistan.

Bull crap! No tough situation, he lays it on Congress like the law says. But I am happy to see you do get the connection how this dictator is assuming power just like another famous dictator did and the people let him get away with it until he was in fact an unimpeded dictator. All this happened before the Evil began but it sure made it possible. In our system, he is setting precedent for a subsequent Commander in Chief to continue on the track to dictator. Congress is suppose to check this progress of power assumption, but with Harry Reid applauding, Congress is ham strung. This sort of thing has played out before with disastrous result.

It can hardly be more clear why Stripping the Democrats of majority power in the Senate is absolutely necessary. Vote for the lady running against Merkley!! The only way to stop this shit.
 
White House now saying that if negotiations leaked, Taliban would kill Bergdahl, and that's why they didn't notify congress. I'm sure the Taliban is concerned about public opinion in the US, and they wouldn't have received their 5 senior leaders back if they kill Bergdahl.

I can't believe it took 5 days to come up with that steaming pile of crap, yet I'm seeing desperate fools in the media running with this story, as if the WH can at all be trusted.

How dumb do they think we are? There have been media reports for over a year indicating that the Taliban wanted these 5 back for Bergdahl, yet suddenly they don't want it leaked?

Let's get some hearings and find out who knew about this "demand," because in some alternative reality where this is true, didn't Obama just get blackmailed by the Taliban?

The Obama administration will attempt to resume talks with the Taliban to free the only known American soldier in captivity in exchange for the release of Taliban prisoners held at the U.S. detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The move is an attempt to free Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl before the majority of US forces leave Afghanistan by the end of 2014, the report in the Washington Post said, citing current and former officials.

The swap would trade Bergdahl for five Taliban members who would be released from Guantanamo Bay into protective custody in Qatar, the Post reported.
