US government sues Arizona over anti-immigration law

But this is a law that targets people who are Latino or look Latino. Someone who looks European isn't going to be asked to show they are a citizen, especially not for breaking small laws.

Can you please show where this is stated in the new law? Or are you just making this up?

Everyone who is suspected of committing a crime will be asked to show their identification. Their color is irrelevant. And the law doesn't allow for racial profiling. The TSA doesn't just examine people who look Middle Eastern.

Racial profiling happens daily in police work. I told a story a while back about a white male in Houston that had kidnapped his child. The police stopped me, by my house, because I am white and was driving a similar vehicle. They stopped me to help serve and protect it's citizens. Why would I be upset about that? They were trying to protect me.

So why should legal hispanic citizens be upset about the police trying to protect them from illegals? Sure they might not be a danger to anyone, but they cost money, and take jobs.

Get over the whole racial profiling crap.

It's one thing for the police to be chasing a specific suspect with identifying marks or properties (e.g. white/black wearing a t-shirt and ball cap and driving X kind of car).

It's very different for the police to suspect anyone with brown skin of violating a law they have no specific information there was a crime committed.

Police DON'T suspect anyone with brown skin of violating a law they have no specific information there was a crime committed.

Nor are they encouraged to do so by this law.

It's just your personal little strawman.

It's so easy to have White skin and conveniently ignore the suffering that Latinos in Arizona are going to go through, and that People of Color have to go through on a daily basis. It doesn't matter how many People of Color share their experiences of being profiled or harassed for simply looking 'different', because why would cops be racist? Why would they profile when this law prohibits it? Their experiences are simply figments of their imagination, we as White people simply know better than them and they just use the race card to avoid responsibility. White people are the final say on what real racism is, after all, because we must be good people who are objective and impartial. We are White, we are neutral, we are default. We are the flesh coloring crayon, are we not? We elected a Black president, did we not? Post-Racial America is here, wipe away the past and ignore subtle racism that still occurs on a daily basis! We don't wear white hoods or call ourselves Grand Wizards, and we shun those people from society! And cops are good people who always follow the righteous morals and laws - they are divine robots incapable of human shortcomings, prejudice, malice, and hate.

Ignore the lone White person who still drops the N bomb, calls Latinos, Middle-Easterners, and Asians derogatory names - he is an individual, he does not speak for all Whites in this blissful post-racial America. But hey, you look Latino in Arizona and you just jaywalked and that's a crime, are you a citizen? Show us your citizenship. Now. Down to the station with you. Oh, you're legal? Our bad, we're just trying to protect you. Oh hey there is another Latino loitering on a corner looking for a job, they must be illegal gotta go.

Ignore the hateful White person and their friends who assault someone for being a different color, or in an interracial relationship. They are individuals, they speak not for us as White people as a whole. But hey, you're a Person of Color and you just assaulted a White person - damn People of Color they're all violent, better walk across the street to avoid them, they'll hold you up and steal your stuff, I know that cause I see it on the news all the time and the news isn't racist at all. Probably do drugs too, cause you're a Person of Color and us White people we don't do drugs, but when we do - individuals, friends!

In the end it's okay though guys - 1.5 million Latinos are now an open field to be subjected to harassment and profiling in Arizona if they jaywalk, have a blinker out, loiter on a street corner, maybe speed a bit, etc. But they're being protected from the reported under five-hundred thousand illegals there. And really, the majority of them are trafficking drugs because that's what the Governor of Arizona said - regardless if the border control actually disputed her claims.

I know we all want to think we've moved past how bad things used to be - and it's true, there is no more slavery anymore, and for the most part segregation has been abolished. But you can see it once you start looking for it, and don't turn a blind eye anymore. Just because the KKK isn't as loud anymore, or other White supremacist groups, doesn't mean it isn't there. You can look on this board for good examples of sweeping generalizations of People of Color, dismissal of their experiences because they must be playing the race card and those things can't really happen anymore, etc.

But racial profiling will happen with this law in Arizona, because cops just as we, regardless of what oaths they've taken, are unfortunately human.

Wow. Unfortunate that they're human?

I think it extremely fortunate that they're human.

I like humans.

I think they're a very special species filled with compassion, understanding and good will.

I'm saying if they're told to go out and send the "illegals" back home, they'll do what it takes. And the only way to do it is racial profiling and all the negative baggage that goes along with it.

Not at all.

This law is a win-win for both sides of the immigration issue.

Illegal aliens WHO BREAK THE LAW will be detected as illegal and sent home.

Illegal aliens who obey our other laws will go on undetected as they have for decades.

As fewer and fewer illegal aliens who flaunt our other laws remain in the country racial tensions will decrease and opinions will improve.

Wow. Unfortunate that they're human?

It's unfortunate that a law that requires inhuman colour blindness will be enforced by humans who have normal human foibles, like prejudice. It would be better not to have such a law, since we currently have no trustworthy law-enforcement robots.

Not yet, anyway.

Congrats. You don't like racism. Welcome to the ideals of everybody else on this board.

That entire diatribe and you still can't point to the portion in the law that encourages racial profiling.

You mean like most other laws that exist? I don't think it is unfortunate to have laws.

I don't think all laws are as subjective as "suspicion of being an illegal immigrant." I suppose it boils down to this for me: corrupt cops can abuse any law. A law like this can be damaging even when enforced by cops who aren't corrupt...in a way that laws against speeding, for example, can't be.

Minstrel, I would invite you to read the actual law. http://www.azleg.gov/legtext/49leg/2r/bills/sb1070s.pdf

Please point to the part of the legislation that allows cops to stop someone on the basis of "suspicion of being an illegal immigrant". The only way someone can be asked to show identification is if they are suspected of committing a crime or are caught doing so.

I agree that they can't be stopped based on suspicion of being an illegal immigrant. Once stopped, they can be forced to prove their immigration status based on suspicion of being an illegal immigrant. This is clearly going to be selectively applied and because there's virtually no crime that indicates a person's immigration status, the basis for "suspicion" is going to be, consciously or not, things like skin colour and accent. Even though the law says that that cannot be the basis, it will be because there's no other basis for suspicion that this person breaking the speed limit might be illegal and this person probably isn't.

If a non-corrupt cop enforces a speeding law, a license is required to be shown, regardless of skin color.

When you're pulled over for speeding, you're asked for your license and registration. If you're arrested for committing a crime, you're fingerprinted and your identity is checked. I fail to see what the problem is and how the Arizona law makes cops do something different they haven't done other than not letting illegals go.

How about when you're stopped for jaywalking?

Face the facts, man. It's those other laws (jaywalking, broken tail light, etc.) that will be selectively enforced far more heavily against people with brown skin.

I've been stopped for jaywalking. My mother has been stopped for a broken tail light (I was in the car). Both times, identification was requested.

Face the facts, man. You're trying to create a strawman that all cops are rabid racists who can't wait to start cracking spic heads.

It's not a legal requirement to carry identification while walking around. It's a good idea in case you get hit by a care or something, but not a requirement.

What is "reasonable suspicion that the PERSON is an alien who is unlawfully present in the United States" ?

Would you reasonably expect most white people to be unlawfully present? You think the cops are going to hassle such white people?

This is a slam dunk.

Is it an impediment to be taken to your home to get it? Again, in open and free countries like Sweden, it's a requirement for foreigners to not only carry identification, but their passport. That passport can be requested at any time. And yet asking for identification of someone who is believed to have committed a crime somehow unjust?

The police aren't robots. They're going to have suspicion first, then find a reason to pull people with brown skin over, then hassle them for papers. Just like in all sorts of nasty countries none of us would want to live in.

Yep. All police are racists. Well done, Denny. Well done.

This is what happens when the US Government fails to do its job. What are we paying our government for if they won't do the jobs assigned to them?

Is it shocking that govt. fails to do its job?

LOL
