Cool article from today. A little background on what happened in Memphis

It’s only been a mere handful of months since the Memphis Grizzlies unceremoniously cut ties with their first round pick of 2016. Rumors swirling in and outside the locker room prompted a decision that didn’t sit well with one person above all others: the guy that got cut. Money is the last thing Baldwin addressed in our talk, but he makes a powerful point of self-awareness.

“Looking back, (Memphis) signed me for four years,” reflects the former Vanderbilt star. “I missed out on between six and eight million dollars because of my attitude. When you put that in the grand scheme of things, that’s a lot for something that’s so easily fixable.”

So how would a guy, barely a year removed from being one of the most prized prospects in the entire league, expected to be fulfilling an NBA role right now, respond to the assignment? Like I said, this is a new Wade Baldwin we’re talking about.

“I think it’s probably the best thing that’s happened to me in my life,” he said profoundly. “After such a negative thing went down, here I just tried to turn that negative all the way into a positive. Personally, I think I’ve done it very well. Moreso off the court than on the court, which was my biggest goal coming here. Building chemistry, relationships, being well-liked by all my teammates and the organization from top to bottom. That was a very big success for me.”

Talent has never been and is still no issue with the versatile, defensive-minded guard. But improving what’s between the ears came from spending time outside the lines.

“I’ve never really faced any large adversity in my life and with Memphis, it was a life-changing moment for me. The way I acted, I came off a bit brash, a bit cocky, a bit arrogant. I never felt like I was uncoachable or had a bad attitude toward the game of basketball. I think that was just my competitive spirits and people taking it the wrong way.

“But here (with the Legends), I mean it’s just been the complete opposite. How my approach has been, treating everybody kindly, respectfully and getting to know everybody. That’s something I didn’t do at Memphis. I didn’t know all my teammates, I didn’t build a relationship with them off the court. That was a big problem when it came down to decision making and whether they wanted me on the team or not.”

That has to be wrong...
2 way players can only spend a maximum of 45-days with the NBA team. They can be the whole season in dleage.

If they are with the team, but dont play does it still count towards the 45

Stotts said on the pregame interview that Baldwin would be with the team the rest of the season, FYI.

So whatever the rule, that’s what came out of Stotts’ mouth.

So he’s probably getting a regular contract once his 45 days are up.

I’m going to assume that based on his G-League performance and the potential that got him drafted as high as he was, Portland is going to hold onto Baldwin as insurance for Napier leaving, whether via trade or through free agency.

Whats up with CJ Wilcox?

Days after the G league ends don’t count toward the 45 day maximum. The Blazers called him up on Jan. 30th and the G league ends March 24th, so that’s 54 days. They’re either going to have to send him back down for 9 days or so, or convert his contract to a regular one.

This means we won’t have to sign any more guys on ten day contracts to satisfy league rules.

Could also make him playoff eligible. Not sure though.

He should be playoff eligible.

I wonder if his contract extends into next year too... I'd be good if we can have him on a min contract in 18-19 season.

It will be interesting to see what happens with PapaG too. I doubt he gets signed for the rest of the season (as I think that would bump us into tax territory). Is it too late to get him onto a 2-way contract now? If so, I think Portland just lets him walk.

I believe Baldwin will be a restricted free agent after the season. I think signing him was always about the future. He’s someone worth developing and he’s in the best possible position as a guard with Terry, vanterpool, and Dame.

It’s too late for two way contracts. My guess is they brought Papagiannis in for a look with an eye towards maybe bringing him back in the summer.

Is it just me or does Baldwin kind of remind anyone else of a PG version of Bazemore when he was first bouncing around on a few teams? Neither were good shooters but Bazemore stuck around because of his athleticism. Baldwin seems like he has pretty long arms and that same almost out of control dribbling style but in an attacking sort of way. If he ever figures out his shot and can learn to play within himself he could be decent.

I'm not sure we'll have a roster spot for him next year though.

Looks like Baldwin actually signed a non guaranteed contract through the 18-19 season. Good shit.
