Wade Baldwin coming up

Anyone think this can be for an up coming trade?

I mean, calling him up otherwise doesn’t make much sense. Its not like he’s going to play.

Could also be injury related. Wasn’t Napier struggling with something recently?

I am surprised how long Swanigan is at the G-League for a 1st round pick.

:ghoti: Been waiting for this. Let's see what he can do now.

Bringing all the guns to bear - we're done messing around now!

Well, he gets 45 days' run with the team. If you think that he won't play down the stretch, maybe this is the time? Or maybe it is Shabazzle or CJ going away. :dunno:

I was going to say that having him up around the ASB for some practice time with the team and stuff may make sense, but that's still 2+weeks away.

His Trump impersonation is spot on.

I’m not. There are a million players ahead of him, and he needs to get back in shape. The team also made it clear it was going to be a prolonged assignment.

Get back in shape? I did not think he was not in shape at any time during the season.

I am certain they have an idea why he needs it - it is unusual however, I can't remember a 1st round pick spending so much time at a D-league team (since they did not have G-league teams before).

God I hope he replaces Meyers Leonard on the roster. Meyers is the modern day Andris Biedriņš.

Looks like he gained weight between summer league and the regular season.

Sadly, he will always fight weight. Fat cell numbers are almost entirely set during childhood and that is when he was quite overweight. You can burn off the fat but the cells are still there waiting to fill up again. Not letting those form in the first place for your child is "huge" in keeping them from fighting obesity later on.

So many kids are fighting a losing battle because of how they are fed as children even though they may not appear very overweight at a young age due to their active metabolism. But it is a time bomb weighting to explode....so to speak.

Well, how often does a team draft not one but two guys in the 1st round that are buried in the depth chart from the get go?

Under league rules, Baldwin can spend 45 days with the Blazers during the G League regular season and his salary will not count against Portland's salary cap. After the G League regular season ends in late March, Baldwin can rejoin the Blazers without affecting their salary cap. The timing of the move allows Portland to maximize Baldwin's time with the NBA club without any financial ramifications.

Players on two-way contracts are not eligible to play in the NBA playoffs unless their contracts are converted to NBA deals.

So this probably has nothing to do with a trade, and was probably agreed to with Baldwin’s agent before he signed.

Meanwhile, 2 of the top 5 for RoY rankings were drafted AFTER Collins and one of those after Swanie. Ugh....

Collins is 30th among rookies in MP and Swanie didn't make the top 40 which was the end of the list I saw.

Maybe they want to get a look at him against some NBA level competition before they commit to trading someone else. Maybe they want to showcase him as a possible (minor) trading chip. Or maybe they think he's learned what he can learn in the G League and they want him practicing with the big league team and coaches to continue his development.

How many of them are on playoff teams?

Two way players can’t be traded.

Best guess is this was pre planned from the moment he signed. I remember Baldwin saying he chose Portland partly because they offered him “more days.” This is most likely what he was talking about.

But he definitely is insurance in case Napier gets traded.

RoY doesn't mean they will have a better carrer then Collins. We didn't draft a guy to win RoY we drafted for the player who will be with us for a long time and looking at Collins in limited time he will be good. If we drafted Kuzme or Mitchell neither would be getting the same USG% or minutes they are getting now. RoY generally goes to a young player on a crappy team because they get the opportunity right off the bat.

I really think they just want him working with the team and the coaches to accelerate his development and see what they have going forward. We don't have a G League affiliate. So, he wasn't working under POR's supervision or system in Texas. He was basically just getting some playing time against other G League level talent.

I think this is more about what they do come July than what they do in February. If they don't move Shabazz before the deadline, their assessment of Baldwin may influence their decision to match any offer sheet Napier gets this coming summer.

How many of them are on playoff teams?

Of the top 40, 12 are playing for Playoff teams. (ranking by MP...the above list was ranked by PPG) So Collins is 26th in minutes played among rookies but 30th in ppg.

#1 - Simmons (PHI) 35 mpg
#4- Jason Tatum (BOS) 31 mpg
#14 - OG Anunoby (TOR) 21 mpg
#17 - Bam Adebayo (MIA) 20 pmg
#26 - Zach Collins (POR) 15 mpg
#28 Jordan Bell (GSW) 14 mpg
#29 Torrey Craig (DEN) 14 mpg
#31 Daniel Theis (BOS) 14 mpg
#34 Sterling Brown (MIL) 13 mpg
#36 Semi Ojeleye (BOS) 13 mpg
#38 Terrance Ferguson (OKC) 13 mpg
#40 Brandon Paul (SAS) 10 mpg

What was surprising is Boston has the best record in the East and third best record in the NBA playing 3 rookies regular rotation minutes. Nice job Brad Stevens. (IMO the 2nd best coach in the league)
