The Santa Cruz Warriors defeated the Los Angeles D-Fenders 121-106 Monday night, scoring a Santa Cruz-record 41 second quarter points on the way to the double-digit victory.
Santa Cruz was paced by Seth Curry, who scored 20 points. Mychel Thompson scored a season-high 18 points, while Cameron Jones added 17 points and dished out seven assists. Dominic McGuire recorded a double-double with 16 points and 14 boards, while Scott Machado scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Los Angeles was led by C.J. Williams, who scored a game-high 25 points off the bench. Manny Harris scored 22 points, while Terrence Williams logged a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 11 assists.
There were 11 lead changes in the first half, but the Warriors pulled away behind a Santa Cruz-record 41 points in the second quarter on 61.5 percent shooting and never looked back. The Warriors went ahead by 10 on a Kevin Kotzur layup with 6:28 left in the second quarter and kept their double-digit lead for the rest of the game, owning as much as a 29-point advantage over the D-Fenders early in the third.
The Warriors outshot Los Angeles (50.5%-42.7%) and set a Santa Cruz record in free throw percentage, shooting a perfect 13-of-13 from the line. Santa Cruz won the battle of the boards (58-35), and had more assists (33-23) and points in the paint (64-40). The D-Fenders committed fewer turnovers (9-18) and had more steals (10-4).
The Santa Cruz Warriors return to Kaiser Permanente Arena on Tuesday, Feb. 11 to take on the Idaho Stampede at 7:00 p.m. The Warriors will wear custom tie-dye jerseys, which will be auctioned off during the game to benefit the team's community programs, and every fan in attendance will receive a tie-dye rally towel courtesy of Plantronics.
