1) Having gone to Cal, I don't usually root for Stanford guys, but....
2) If there is any justice in the world Jason Collins will NOT be a Laker.
3) Bible quotes only prove bigotry and hypocrisy of quoters. Starting with Broussard, who was criticized, not persecuted - there is a difference. Where were the bible thumpers when Warriors coach and born again Christian family values man got caught paying off his mistress? Where are they during NBA All Star weekend with notorious parties? Broussard says he opposes premarital sex, adultery, homosexuality, funny, the bible only gets thumped when it's gays.
4) "I am a 34 year old NBA center, I'm black and I'm gay". Because it's identity, not bedroom. Straight folks understand this instinctively, for themselves. If a straight person says he/she is married, engaged, looking for Ms./Mr. Right, etc. no one screams "I'm not interested in your sex life!" A straight person who is not having sex with anyone is still straight. It's who you are. Because straights think they are the "norm" they don't have to explain it. It's just who they are. But a gay person says this is who I am and we get "I'm not interested in your sex life!" even when, as in this case, no mention is made of sex life. This was, in fact, a totally celibate coming out. Jason Collins does not have a boyfriend, it's possible he never has. It's still who he is.
5) On court Collins should be treated like any other NBA player. He should be signed if a team thinks he can help them win, be paid commensurate with his projected contributions, and get as many minutes as he earns. I doubt he'd want it any other way. But somehow an athlete who prays loudly should get special consideration? Tim Tebow seems to be the new homophobe talking point. Tebow was not released because he's straight, or Christian, or prays loudly on street corners (which the bible explicitly criticizes) but because he did not produce. I don't think an LGBT athlete should get special on-court/field/etc. consideration, should a bible thumper?
6) My understanding is Christians believe all have fallen short, so no one can judge who is or is not worthy, who is or is not truly Christian, is that not correct (if oversimplified)? This is different from Judaism, where anyone born of a Jewish mother is Jewish, period, even an out and out atheist like me. So, why do some Christians who don't thump bibles over straight adultery, or even assault and rape, get so riled about a clean cut intelligent polite articulate law abiding gay man? What's that about the mote and beam?
7) I know Shooter hated President Obama before he even became president, usually for reasons having little or nothing to do with anything Obama ever said or did. Not sure why it's relevant here; maybe because "they all look alike"?
8) Collins said he was unaware of other gay players in the NBA. I'd be willing to bet he is now, that he's gotten calls from others. No hard evidence, of course, just the knowledge that it is virtually statistically impossible for him to be the only one.
9) Twins are not always 100% identical despite DNA. Jason is an inch taller than Jarron, Horace Grant has a heavier build than Harvey. DNA plus other factors make us who we are, so yes, it's entirely possible and obviously happened to have a gay and a straight twin.
10) Some marketer could come up with some great and hilarious commercials featuring the gay twin and the straight twin, if they wanted, and they probably do.
11) "I am a 34 year old NBA center" - one of my dearest, most deeply loved friends, whom I will go to my own grave still loving, died of AIDS just weeks before what would have been his 34th birthday, the age when Jason Collins finally started to truly live. I don't believe in cosmic connections or anything mystical like that, it's purely coincidence, that serves to remind me of what us older folks sometimes don't like to acknowledge, that "the torch has been passed to a new generation". From everything I've seen Jason Collins and Brittney Griner are worthy torch bearers.
OK, now I'm out again until I'm back May 29.
