As good as Robin Lopez' stats have been, there is a lot of discussion about how much he helps the team and his teammates in ways that don't show up in his stats. On this I agree. One example is the perception that due to Robin's play and impact on the game, his teammates are having career years in rebounding the ball, and Aldridge is freer to play LaMonster in the starring role.
Agreed. Lopez is FUCKING AWESOME. If I ever bought jerseys, I would buy his first.
Likewise, as horrible as Mo Williams' shooting and turnovers are, I believe he hurts the team in ways that go well beyond his personal stats -- pounding the ball, missing or ignoring wide open teammates, going one-on-three, launching bad shots with 20 seconds on the shot clock without a single teammate in position, destroying ball movement, etc.
Even if CJ comes back, I don't see CJ usurping Mo with Stotts running the ship.
What to do?
Let's look at why Mo is playing:
1. Experience.
Can't deny this. He's been to the finals.
2. Shooting.
Again, as much as he might drive us crazy by taking bad shots, he hits a fair number of them. He's a better shooter than my fave, Andre Miller. And I think Stotts puts a premium on hitting the midrange jump shot.
3. He's our best backup PG
Actually, this isn't true. Earl Watson is obviously better at PG things like distributing the ball. Watson can also play defense. But Watson can't shoot, so that rules him out of Stotts' plans. So Mo is "the most PG-like of our backup guards who can shoot."
4. (I'm assuming) Intangibles.
I get the impression that he's just a really good guy and, apart from his play on the court, a great teammate.
5. Olshey recruited him and it was kind of a coup to land him.
I join you in being dissatisfied with his play, but it's actually not as bad as I thought it would be (I was REALLY pissed off by the signing) and it would be odd to rock the boat. I continue to hope that he was signed with a secret deal to trade him midseason, but that was probably a deal to trade him to "a contender" and... that's us!
I think his ball-hogginess wouldn't be as bad if he played more with Batum, because Batum is really our PG in the halfcourt most of the time. But Mo is supposed to play with the bench. That might actually be part of the reason for some of his overdribbling and overshooting (other than, y'know, that's who he is) because our bench is pretty much offensively inept. Plus him shooting so much is sure helping Freeland's and Robinson's offensive rebounding stats.
All in all, I think his worst problem is his defense (or lack thereof), particularly when paired with the similarly deficient Lillard. (After all, it's not like our offense is hurting:
over the last ten games we've got the highest scoring offense in the NBA.) And defense is not a problem CJ looks likely to fix.
Two possible ways out: if Mo wants to go to one of the two biggest markets and we get either PABLO PRIGIONI or Steve "Blanky" Blake back. I'd be happy with those. Both can hit the three and both, while slow of foot, are still better defenders than Mo. And then if Stotts wants mid-range scoring he'll have to play CJ and we all win!
