Welcome Matisse Thybulle

Welcome to our community

Be a part of something great, join today!

Having Thybulle on the team looks like a nice single. A good hit. If he becomes a stand-up double, awesome.
His O needs a lot of work!

It just needs to be average. We get average offense I'm more than happy.

Matisse Thybulle NASTY FALL - Almost Ended His Career

This is scary. Reminds me of Josh Hart.

One of the comments - "only out a week with a shoulder injury. Could’ve been his career but he was smart enough to tuck his chin and land on his butt"

A large part of me can’t wait until this summer when we trade a bunch of young up and comers for good but not great vets to appease Dame.
This place will lose its collective mind

I enjoy watching Matisse a lot, but I am really worried about the switching defense exposing the blazers at times with such an unusual defender as he is. He will really thrive if the Blazers bring drop coverage with Nurk behind him, first, it will allow Nurk to play to his advantage, second, Matisse's tendency to attack the perimeter players from the side or behind instead of the traditional "get between him and the basket" leaves the basket vulnerable when he is not able to get to the guy he is trying to alter the shot of.

The beauty of drop coverage with a guy like him (as we have seen with Embiid in Philly) is that there is always someone between the offensive player and the basket (in Embiid) - and they also have to think about from what unusual angle Matisse is going to fly at them. Time to play to the roster, Chauncy.

If memory serves, didn't Paul Allen have a collection of Matisse?

reminded me of Gerald Wallace

Matisse filmed himself in the lead up to the Tokyo Olympics, and edited it into a four part documentary. It’s a great insight into both Matisse, and the Australian team.

Too bad he couldn’t hit his corner 3’s last night. When those aren’t falling he’s an absolute 0 on offense.

If you are expecting him to make 3s….it is not going to happen. And that’s nothing new. He is a defender 1st always….. which is fantastic, because we knew that going in. ANYTHING we get from him on the offensive end is gravy.

Cronin has already said that when we make a move for someone he thinks will be a "needle mover", we are going to give up a TON, and it will seem like a lopsided trade.

Guys like that don’t make a lot of money. And I’m okay with that.

His shooting % from 3 isn't actually that bad. Career average is 33%, so it's not out of the question to think he could make some.

Basically the exact same as Aminu.

Thybulle was born in Scottsdale, Arizona, the son of Greg, a Haitian-born engineer raised in the Harlem neighborhood of New York,[3][4] and Dr. Elizabeth Thybulle, a naturopath who died of leukemia in 2015.[5] He was named after French artist Henri Matisse.[6] When he was two, his family moved to Sydney, Australia, where they lived for around seven years.[7] The Thybulle family lived in Sydney's North Shore while in Australia and the children attended elementary school at North Sydney Demonstration School.[8] Matisse did not play much basketball in Australia and focused more on swimming while there, where he said lifeguards "were a really big deal".[9] His family returned to the U.S. in 2005 and settled in Sammamish, Washington, a suburb east of Seattle.[7]

Thybulle could not make layups consistently until around the eighth grade, when his coordination began matching his speed.[9] He attended Skyline High School for two years, then transferred to nearby Eastside Catholic,[9][10] where he was ranked a four-star recruit by Scout.com and three-star by ESPN,[11][12] and graduated in 2015.

Thybulle played college basketball for the Washington Huskies. As a senior in 2019, he was recognized as the top defender in the nation with the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year and the Lefty Driesell Award.

He was selected in the first round of the 2019 NBA draft with the 20th overall pick (along with Nassir Little 25th pick, and Cam Reddish 10th pick). He was named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 2021 and 2022.

That non sequitur line about his lack of ability to make layups is total wiki chaos and quite hilarious.

His shooting % from 3 isn't actually that bad. Career average is 33%, so it's not out of the question to think he could make some.

The main issue I have with simply looking at shooting percentage is that it doesn't take into account shot difficulty. If Thybulle is making 33% (1.0ppp) on wide open shots because teams would rather take away Dame's playmaking abilities, then it's not near as good as him shooting 33% when defenses are playing him honestly. Dame averages 1.117ppp (points per/possession), so a player who doesn't require to be played honestly, will effectively drop Dame's PPP. That difference in PPP can mean a 3-5ppg game swing, which is massive.

This isn't to say Thybulle is a bad shooter, but I think it's important to take note of the type of shots he's getting, and why.

He costed us only 2 second rounders. Matisse with shooting in this league is going to cost at least a 1st or even two 1st. Like what we paid for ROCO.

He is only worth two seconds for a reason. Hopefully he can develop his shooting more being in a more encouraging environment and even more open look with Dame and Ant. (After we extend his for cheap. In the 6-7 mil range)

If he takes a reasonable ‘prove it’ deal he’s not a bad guy to have on your roster. I never understood the handwringing about him not being playable in the playoffs assuming he’s on an inexpensive deal. This is a team several players away—not one key acquisition away. I’ll take a Thybulle for 2 seconds, sure. With a side of 3 point shooting.
