What is Matisse Thybulle?

I’d be happy to see him catch a shoot at this clip for 40 games. And if he continues to shoot 37+% for extended periods, I want him shooting more volume 3’s to up him ppg average. I’m not opposed to him shooting some pull up 3’s, I just don’t think it’s that needs to be a focal point.

He shot 38% from three over 22 games last year with our team.

He's at 42% in 12 games so far this year. So that's 34 games. Almost at your sample size of 40 games.

Thybulle is a younger (by 2 years) Josh-Hart-type player who is from the NW.
He's a perfect fit with Scoot and Sharpe. He plays defense, moves the ball quickly, and can hit catch-and-shoot 3-pointers.
Why would he be traded?

Josh-Hart-type except for Hart's much better rebounding and passing, which is kind of significant. Better defender though. Comparable from three

he's fine as a bench player...somebody you can bring in with the idea he can inhibit a hot perimeter player on the opposing team. That has value. And he's on a decent contract; might be a bit overpaid, might not. Meaning it's a tradable contract. Not a player you actively shop, but certainly don't hold him out of a bigger trade if his salary is necessary

Josh is playing like ass this year, and for twice the price of Thybulle!

41% from the field and 30% from three. So no, they’re not comparable from three. Tisse is shooting 38% and Hart is shooting 30%. Sure, he rebounds, but so does Sharpe.. and Ayton…. And even Grant these days (sometimes).

I wasn't talking about 10 game sample sizes when we have over 700 games of sample between the two players. That's a lot more predictive IMO

in terms of careers, Hart has a 46.3 FG%; Thybulle 45.0%. Hart is 34.8% on three's; Thybulle is 34.0%. Hart has shot 1435 three's; Thybulle has shot 637. That's what I meant by comparable

there's also the component of variance. Hart has shot 30% on three's in NY in 12 games this season; he shot 52% in 25 games last season. Either end of variance rarely establishes a new normal

Serious answer:
He's not an integral part of the team, and players who make $7 mil to $10 mil/year are rare and valuable pieces who can make bigger trades work.

That doesn't mean I think we should trade him.... unless we get a good deal, of course.

We have more than 12 games with Thybulle. We have the 22 games from last year too. His shooting has a larger sample size than people want to admit

And we also have historical context on Hart starting hot for a new team and then falling off in the following year.

I really don't know what it is you're trying to argue...at least not with me when I talked careers

* I said Hart is a better rebounder...that's demonstrably true: 10.5 rebounds/100-possessions vs 4.6; 11.9% reb rate vs 5.3%
* I said Hart is a better passer: again, demonstrably true
* I said they were comparable shooters....that's accurate too in terms of careers. Hart better at three's; Thybulle better at two's

now, if you want to operate from recency bias on their respective new teams, ok:

Hart in 37 NY games is 39-92 on three's for a .423 conversion rate
Thybulle in 34 PDX games is 52-130 for a .400 conversion rate

Well, one of the first points I made is cost. Hart just signed a 20 million per year deal. Almost twice as much as Tisse.

Also I’m mainly debating whether they’re comparable shooters. This year they’re not. Hart has now had two teams where he started out hot after a trade and then fell off a cliff the next year. Two teams in a row. I haven’t looked at New Orleans. Thybulle shot well last year after the trade and he has continued that same level of shooting this year. Hart had a massive swing from last year to this year.

He's a non-starter who was starting.

Good bench player who when used to his benefit, fits in.

ok...but I didn't say I'd prefer Hart over Thybulle. I was just comparing them as players.

ok, again....but that's just typical variance (until it's not)

what you're doing, in my view, is distilling the comparison down to just this 12 game season. Down to the smallest sample where Thybulle has an advantage; because when you take Hart's 37 game NY career and Thybulle's 34 game Portland career, Hart shot better from three.

I went back and looked. Harts shooting year to year is wildly variant. His first year in LA he shot almost 40% and then he fell off. He never shot even 35% in New Orleans. His first year here he shot well, and then he fell off. His first year in NY he shot really well, and now he’s falling off. You can’t discount that. It’s a trend everywhere he has been.

So, he's the MVT, not the MVP? :)

At 26 years old I see his potential as a defensive player in key moments. Kind of like how we relied on Harkless. Shout out to Maurice Harkless.
