Get him, Duck

"It feels great to play with those guys, especially CJ and Dame," Nurkic said. "They make my life easier. I really love to be here. The coaching staff has done a great job of putting me in position as to where I am supposed to be and my teammates are looking for me. This is the first time in two years I'm having fun."

I'm not sure many saw this type of efficiency coming but it is such a welcome sight. When Jusuf goes to the basket or to the boards, people are bouncing off of him and for the first time in a long time, the Blazers have the biggest, strongest guy on the court....which creates opportunities and mismatches.

He is a very good passer. Maybe not as creative as Plumlee but more like Sabonis in terms of holding the ball like a grapefruit and faking before threading the needle. He easily should have had at least 8 assists tonight. Vonleh missed a dunk to start the game, Dame missed a lay-in the very next possession and Harkless missed an absolute gimme at the rim off another great pass.

He has very quick feet for how little athleticism he has. His quickness belies his lack of speed or vertical leap.

When he sets a screen, you are not getting through or around it. In fact, the Blazer guards really need to rub off him so their defender will completely enveloped by the Beast.

You can't teach size. He is just a big man and isn't afraid to use his size. He also occupies the other team's big when he rolls to the basket thereby creating a lane for teammates to the rim. They have to respect his dive to the basket. (novel concept)

Good hands around the basket. The ball seems to stick to him and even if he misses, he is quick to his own rebound. He also goes into the defender as much as any big in a LONG time in Portland.

>Proof in the numbers. Perhaps Stotts can alter his philosophy in critical moments and direct Nurc for a shot or recieve a pass attempt and be fouled foul with a .750% free throw advantage.

Who knows how this plays out as teams adjust but for the short term, the results should be very positive and his style of play is just what the Blazers needed. And a 1st round pick? Two thumbs up! :twothumbs:

I actually think Nurk may end up being the DeFacto Leader of our team before too long.
He's a true Alpha beast out there, and sets a great example to the rest of the team with his grit and work ethic.

You do realize that one of the reasons why Denver traded him is because he was sulking? Denver fans hate him because they felt that he had a bad attitude. I'm not sure I would make the leap that he's going to be the leader of this team.

I'm not sure we need Meyers to be playing on the low block. I like the idea of using him at PF while Nurk is playing C. Having Meyers floating around the 3-pt line while Nurk is posting up would work imo. The question is "can Meyers guard power forwards?" It will be interesting to see, but I think we should be a great defensive rebounding team.

Honeymoon period.

Haha.

Seriously, tho, he is now the only bright spot of this season. Can't wait to see him develop. We need to go all in to put the right coaches around him so he maximizes his talent this summer.

For sure. But.... He doesn't have much competition blocking him at the moment so maybe he stays happy.

Yeah I don't see a lot of white Euros being the leader of NBA teams. Maybe by example, and maybe one of the leaders, but not thee vocal leader. Dirk gets away with it because he is a hall of fame type player.

Meyers will never be power anything.

Exactly. RoLo and Dame thrived for several reasons, but foremost among those is that the organization made it clear to them that they were the starters from day 1. BB27 has the same thing, and that is what he's been craving his whole career.

It's too bad that we're going to have to trade Nurk next season because he's going to get paid more than Plumlee would have.

It wouldn't seem very debatable about who the starter will be for the near future. Not much competition. I agree it would be nice to find another big body with quick feet who can pass--if possible for backup duty.

Zactly. Not like Meyers is suddenly going to develop into a man in the post.

I wouldn't drown myself in tax for Plums, much as I like him. I think they'd be more likely to take a hit for Nurk, though we have time to get the salary situation under control.

Or even a real PF. Someone who can go in or out would work well with Nurk.

I think this is one of the most exciting things for me. With BB27, we're totally good at the C position. We're also set at PG, SG, and the Harkless/Aminu/ET monster means we're set at SF, too. We only have a big hole at PF, and 3 1st rounders to fill it in. If they can be parleyed into an above average NBA starting PF, I think we have a team comparable to the Lillard/Wes/Batum/LMA/RoLo team, except younger.

Can't keep Dame, CJ, Turner and Nurkic. Too many max/near max contracts.

And before you say get rid of Turner I think his midrange game is going to work awesome with Nurk.

I'm pretty sure this isn't true, but it will require some staggering of salaries.
