I think Kaman is the next shoe to fall. There are a few teams wanting to shave some salary either to get under the cap or save money to spend on their own. OKC is one.

After adding Vonleh and Plumlee I don't see a spot for Kaman really and his value IMO is more about what we can bring back rather than simply saving more cap space. We can take back up to $7.5 for him which could save a team $6.5.

I don't think we just cleared cap space to eat it up. I think he's gonna get waived.

There's definitely a movement to get younger all around. Kaman has trade value and looks like he's the odd man out going forward. I think he'd be a good assistant big man coach.

If we could get a SF for him... the right SF, that's no different than signing one.

A lot of teams need backup centers. Miami is one. Denny mentioned Luol Deng and I like the idea of picking him up. Not sure if we could sign and trade Freeland and add Kaman in a deal for him. Tobias Harris from Orlando is another free agent worth looking at.

I think one way or the other Kaman is gone by July 1.

Depends on what happens with RoLo. If we don't re-sign RoLo then I think Kaman will be back.

Kaman is a good value when you look at his salary vs his production. A nice piece off the bench, though I think he needs to force his shot less.

As much as I like Rolo, this is the direction I'm hoping we go in.

Ok so... He has to be waived before the end of this month for the non guaranteed part of his contract to fall off.

Trading Kaman for a player under contract doesn't make sense. If another team wants to get out of a players contract we can take the whole thing in cap space which a trading partner would like even more. If the Blazers need every million of cap space for free agents we can send Kaman and maybe Hendersons deal to philly for a 2nd round pick to get out of their guaranteed money. I agree in that it's likely Kaman contract is cut but first order will be where the big free agents agree to go. No sense in cutting or trading Kaman until July 9th at the earliest.

Except cutting him after July 1 keeps his full salary on the books.

They just got a stud center in this draft. I guess we can give them Kaman and Noah for Noel

That's not a bad idea. Now suggest some.

Ooh - I just had a horrible thought: Chase Budinger.... Please, no - we've suffered enough, surely?

Where did you hear that's the date of his guarantee? I can't remember where but I heard it was late July.

Guarantees can have any date the team and player agree to when writing the contract and I thought Neil set it up as late July just to give the Blazers this extra flexibility.

someone had posted an article that showed his and I think Caron Butlers dates as being June 30th. The article even mentioned it as being an odd date.

it can also be negotiated. Webster re-negotiated his with MIN from June 30 to July 15, iirc, to help MIN try to get Batum.

What about swapping Kaman for Budinger?
I would rather waive Kaman and have the cap space than that scenario. Budinger couldn't even get many mins or games on MIN roster last year and when he did it was underwhelming. Aim higher....

I don't understand why we'd let Kaman go.

to free up some money. Other than that, that's the only reason in my mind. Kaman will be a great end of bench coach for our young bigs now. :) Just re-sign the big three and we stay in the mix one more year until more cap space is available to go after a third max while maxing Lillard.
I am NOT a fan of getting rid of Kaman IMO

Yeah I don't think I would go with Budinger.

I get what you're saying. I mean, I know getting rid of him gets us a little money. I still don't understand why we'd get rid of Kaman. His contract is small. We're going to have to sign someone to fill his roster spot. Keeping him seems like a bigger asset than letting him go. I feel like we should at least be able to get a future second rounder for him between now and the deadline, especially if he plays like he did this year. Plus, he's a valuable teacher to our young big men, which our future heavily weighs on the development of Nards and Noah (as long as Noah remains here).

I thinks it's timing. If his option was late July, I would suspect we would definitely keep him. But if his contract kicks in, we would be under 5 mil to offer max to another player

I've always said a guy like Kaman is valuable insurance even at the bottom of the bench...Clavers old spot even.

I would let Kaman go because we currently have a logjam of young guys. Leonard, Plumlee, Vonleh, etc.

I already understand this. But I don't think it's a wise decision is my point, all things considered.

Neil got kamans replacement last night. He specifically even mentioned how Plumlee could be a "high end backup if we go out in free agency and bring back robin or sign somebody else"
