What Glen Sather is trying to do with Ryan Callahan

On CBC Hotstove, Nick Kypreos, Elliotte Friedman and Glenn Healy had the following conversation about Ryan Callahan:

-Kypreos, “I think there was an interesting twist to the negotiations between Glen Sather and Callahan’s agent Steve Bartlett, to the point where he is allowing them to speak with over clubs. I can tell you that as of a couple of days ago one of those clubs was a Western Conference team and I can say that it was a short conversation. Basically what they told Bartlett was that we believe you are asking for too much term or too much money. It is clear what Glen Sather is doing right now and he is trying to create a market right now outside of one set by the Rangers. He is trying to get other teams to show Callahan that he is not worth what he thinks he is today, rather than July 1. “

-Healy: “Glen gave them the ability to talk to one team and he called his GM buddy and they gave him too much term and too much money well that stinks a little to me. You look at two comparables, Dustin Brown at $5.875 and Joe Pavelski at $6, nothing more than that. If you are trying to pretend you are a group 3 while you are a group 2 unrestricted, good luck getting the money.”

-Friedman: “The Clarkson deal is the one that (Interrupted)

-Healy: “He is a group 3…go to group 3″

-Kypreos, “the other thing is that Brown got eight-years and they don’t want to go near that for Callahan.”

The Rangers are reportedly offering Callahan five-years and $30 million while the Sabres are reportedly willing to give Callahan the seven-years he is seeking.

Deal him to Buffalo. They have some guys I wouldn't mind here at all. Ask for Ott and Moulson and a pick back. Those guys are both UFA's doubtful to re-sign in Buff anyway, so maybe they would do it.

If Cally is this huge building block for Buffalo, and I can see it since he is from up there, they would make a trade like this for him. And we should do it. Then they get Cally to build around and draw in more fans with.

And BTW...enjoy Buffalo Ryan. Sure you'll get a couple of extra years, but see if you like losing year after year with that team. Maybe it is worth it though. AND I think it is crazy we even potentialy offered 6 mill per for 5 seasons. That is too much. But it may be crazier that Cally has said no so far.

Absolutely no to Ott and Moulson. I might want back Moulson and one young guy they would keep. Moulson is a rental. Cally to Buffalo sounds like a sign and trade. Instead of Moulson, I'd prefer to take Armia and McCabe from Buffalo. Two players who stand a good chance to make the Rangers soon and be good players for us over a 5-8 period.

They could re-sign those guys. Why not. Take a 2nd or 3rd round pick, remember Buffalo will have worst case the 2nd pick in each round, and two solid players who can help this season and can be re-signed for the next bunch of seasons.

I have to be honest dump, you seem to be going down a weird road. This Ranger team is built for the next 2 or 3 seasons really. Hank is going to be 32 in a month. Nash is going to be 30 in a few months. Girardi will be 30 next month.

Hank and Nash are our two best players, McDonagh is right there as well of course. I am not saying we need to F everything and go all in for this season, but our 99% focus needs to be on the next 2 or 3 seasons tops no doubt in my mind.

With that said, I don't like to get into make this trade for player X or that trade for player Y. I will let some of you guys do that. To me it seems like a wasted exercise since we really have no clue what can be done. But I do think if Buffalo wants him that badly, and will give him 7 years, we should make a deal with them. I will trust Sather to select the right Sabre players/picks in the deal.

All I say is from where I sit we should be 99% focused on the next 2 TOPS 3 seasons that is all. I cannot sit here with a 32 year old stud goalie. A 30 year old stud forward. And yet worry about 5 years from now. 32-34 is the age range we NEED to go all in for a cup with Hank IMO. After that you play with fire expecting/hoping Hank can still be a top level stud at 35 and older. He can be, but it gets riskier and riskier every season.

And for the record, no quick fix moves as I have said time and time again. I would only make that deal if we plan to re-sign Ott and Moulson. And I will also add we have some really good youth as well. Step, Hags, McD, Kreider, McIlrath, Moore, some solid kids in the minors. So we have youth, but we also have a 32 year old stud 8.5 mill per goalie. And a 30 year old stud 7.8 mill per forward.

We need to focus on winning in the next 2 or 3 seasons. After that it becomes a crap shoot since the further out you go the more unknowns come into play.

Even though it's his hometown team, he'd never sign with a bottom dweller. But that would really suck for him if he got traded there this year. I bet he ends up taking 5 years to stay.

The road not to go down is taking on a player like Ott when the role players on this team are now producing. They weren't earlier in the year. He is not needed here now. Honestly, you have to wonder how much Moulson benefitted from playing with Tavares. Basically, you are dumping Callahan for two, UFA's back. That makes no sense for us.

Callahan is nuts to dismiss 5 yrs/$30 mil, the idea that Cally said he wasn't going to give a "hometown discount" to the Rangers after such a generous proposal is not the talk of a Captain. Could just be part of the negotiation process but he just strikes me as another Drury debacle, Cally's problem is he's no longer making up for his size differential with heart, he's just gliding out there. I would trade Cally for Moulson/prospect, Moulson has 33 points, 8 PP goals and I think he would flourish with AV. Ott's a Callahan clone, same size & basic game, don't know how he'd fit in to AV's system. I'd rather have a bigger guy like Foligno.

Hagelin has been a major disappointment to me this year, he's not even averaging 2 shots per game and also seems to take a lot of shifts off. I think most here were expecting 50 points from him and his injury probably makes that unlikely but he should be putting 3-4 shots on goal per game with AV's system. I agree that any moves by Glen need to have an immediate impact, the Rangers can't wait on prospects while their marquis players get older.

My thought is, if no one is willing to give him a 7yr deal, but Buffalo is, why would they trade for him now when they can get him as a FA next year since no one else would touch him @ 7yrs? it's not like they need him for the playoffs.

Buffalo even going after Callahan makes no sense to me since they're a rebuilding team, but it'd make even less sense for them trade Moulson/others for Callahan when they should be trading them at the deadline for picks/prospects.
