What now? Ownership, etc

It's annoying, but the throwaway Kobe suggestion earlier in the thread isn't that far fetched. Grant Hill owns a pretty large share of the Hawks. Shaq owns a tiny share of the Kings, and MJ of course with the Hornets. Lebron, Wade, and KD have all expressed interest in owning teams in the future.

Kobe has higher total earnings than pretty much every one in recent NBA history except for KG.

Wouldn't surprise me if a player is part of the group that comes forward when the Blazers go up for sale.

Kobe at the head of an investment group makes a lot of sense, actually. He knows what it takes to run an organization. Simiar to Derek Jeter and the Marlins. But I don't think Kobe would fuck up as bad as Jeter did with local fans in Miami.

Kobe has proven to be quite savvy with business.

He got Jeanie Buss to kick her brother out of Laker management. Thst says something for sure.

Yep, plus I have also heard he has made some savvy investments and now has made more outside of basketball then he did inside.

Shaq owns part of the Kings and the Kings fucking hated him. I can totally see Kobe wanting to be involved in owning a team

That's why I brought it up. Wasn't trying to be "edgy" or "hipster". I also think that his presence will attract free agents.
Totally agree. My first reaction to the idea wasn't even negative, at all. Didn't even have to warm up to the idea. He's a killer and would have every reason to be invested in our success. Bring it on.

oh god, if I win the lottery all y'all will come out of the woodwork and expose me for MSNBC (claiming it under the holding company: Fuck Seattle, LLC)

For some reason I don't think Kobe would want to move the team either, idk why, just a hunch.

Has anyone brought up the Moda Center? It's 23 years old. And will be 30 when the lease expires. New ownership isn't likely to pay the bill like PA did on a new arena. Does the city of Portland have the leadership to get that done? The fucking mayor won't even stand up to local scumbag Antifa. It would easily give new ownership AND the NBA an eady out if they chose to play hardball.

@3 years old, yes, but completely upgraded what...5-6years ago?

New sound system, new seat covers, newer layout for dining. all sorts of things. Have no clue about the locker rooms or anything though.

The moda from the public side isnt in need of an upgrade anytime soon.

It's really a testament to the people involved with the whole process of the Rose Garden. That facility is still in really good shape and has stood the test of time very well. Compare it to the arena in Phoenix that was built around the same time and in need of major repairs or a new one and the redoing of Key Arena around the same time as well and I'm not too worried about it. Most casual fans or non-fans I've talked to couldn't believe it when I said that the Moda Center was that old.

I also think the new arena/stadium issues are something that a lot of cities are unwilling to provide too much money for. That problem isn't just unique to Portland. People have realized that it shouldn't be their responsibility to help out these owners that are worth billions.

The Rose Garden would most likely be refurbished. That's a bill that even Portland could afford.

By age yes it’s pretty old. But condition wise it’s really a nice place. I believe they have enough suites if not more than the new arenas, restaurants, huge concourse, I don’t know who designed that arena but somehow they anticipated for the future really well

Barring a late change of heart by Allen’s sister — whose son, Duncan Patton, works as a Seahawks data analyst — Vulcan would have ownership control of both teams for the time being, with McGowan at their business helms, overseen by Kolde, until sales to outside parties can be arranged. Though Vulcan could, in theory, keep owning and operating both teams permanently, this is not expected to occur.

Great article

“An NBA source said Tuesday the league has no interest at all in the Blazers relocating to Seattle, shooting down one of the early rumors that surfaced after Allen died Monday of non-Hodgkins lymphoma at age 65. The Blazers’ lease with the City of Portland at the Moda Center runs through at least 2025, the team is making money — unlike struggling franchises in Memphis and New Orleans — and the league also is uninterested in repairing its image in Seattle by hurting another Northwest city.”

Ding ding ding

In other words: Logic, not conspiracy.

There is absolutely no need for a new arena. None.

I did not realize Bert Kolde was so involved. https://www.oregonlive.com/business...rt_kolde_paul_allens_college.html#incart_2box

"He's who I work with on a daily basis," Blazers chief executive Chris McGowan said Tuesday. "He's going to be heavily involved. He'll be here opening night. He's who I speak with frequently, he's who we do our sports board meetings with, and we have one in a couple weeks. I would anticipate that he would continue to be involved."

"This is a business," Kolde said. "It should be run like a business."

Close observers of the team have often ascribed decisions about management personnel to Kolde or his influence with Allen. And observers have sometimes wondered whether Kolde wanted a more active role with the franchise, maybe even as general manager.

Guess we need to be aware of this guy a bit more.
