What to do with Sharpe?

Whoa. I just assumed all lottery picks had an agent by draft time.
That surprised me too. I wonder what took him so long and who was managing things before today.. Maybe that's why he wasn't playing for a college last year, he was focusing on the agent side of things haha

These kids these days… all about the money.

he had a mentor/coach who effectively behaved as his agent. Dwayne Washington. He just didn't have anyone certified or in an official capacity.

It's part of the reason his predraft process was so wonky and his interviews sucked. Never got training like other prospects did.

With Dame you are paying for the right now and the past. With Simons, you are hopefully paying for right now and the future.

You are also paying for the next several years per his wish and contract.

This rookie small forward will be the second best player on our squad by seasons end. Mark it. Rookie of the year.

Hell, I thought that was Winslow.
Glad to see the rook challenge him during a scrimmage.
Love his silent confidence.

Yeah, his D is why he might be on the floor. I'm so scarred by Stotts and his inability to use young players and letting them learn on the floor (aside from Dame) that I just am not expecting to see a ton of him. Once the offensive side of the floor slows down for him, he's going to be legit.

I just don't see him getting enough minutes to be ROTY this year. He'll get more minutes than we thought, but not starter minutes, which is what it takes likely. But he could easily be the best player from his draft class within three or four years.

He is gonna win those minutes and will be our starting 2 or 3 by the time we enter the playoffs.
Unless Billups goes full Stotts.
Never go full Stotts.

With GPII injured he should be getting minutes to start the season. I hope Chauncey doesn't play Keon over him.

I have a feeling Cronin instructed Chauncey to give Hart and Keon playing time to increase their trade value because they are not in the team's long-term plan.

I do root for the team to do well so I want them to play well but I prefer GP2 and Sharpe over Keon but I feel we are showcasing Hart and Keon as they are prime candidate for any sort of consolidation trade to balance the roster

actually, if you're totaling contracts, Dame is at 258M. But if you're trying to normalize for the next 4 years while assuming that Ant is going to get a big salary in his next extension, it's

Dame 195M --> 49M/year
Ant 100M --> 25M year

so Dame X1.96 salary

however:

Dame .175 winshares/48
Ant .043 winshares/48

so, Dame X 4.06 winshares/48

and:

Dame 4.7 BPM average
Ant -2.2 BPM average

so Dame...wait, an X isn't computable. Simons would have to post a BPM around 11 this season just to get to a zero average. Last season, Giannis had a BPM of 11.2 and was 2nd in the league behind Jokic

also:

Dame 22.2 PER average
Ant 12.3 PER average

Dame X1.80 PER. Ant's best PER was 15.3 last season; Dame's worst was 16.4 as a rookie. He had 7 straight seasons over 20.5 and four of those season were over 24
******************************************************

so yeah, Dame makes a lot more money. But then, excellence and experience have great value (not just in basketball by the way). We know that Dame can drag mediocre teams into the playoffs. Simons can't, at least not anytime in the near future. We also know what Dame has meant to the franchise and he's getting paid for that, in part. There are more numbers to consider than just the raw salary totals and averages; and numbers aren't the only consideration

Your comparing Dame and Ant's past performances to their future contracts.

Dame should be getting worse each year, peak basketball performance is normally in the 26-28 age range, Dame will be what 37 when his contract ends? Simons performance should be going up. If Simons doesn't significantly improve he's just an irrelevant role player on a terrible overpaid contract.

In terms of who can be a key part of a title; the most likely answer is probably neither. Second most likely answer is probably Simons improving in a few years, to where his value greatly exceeds his contract. The chance of Dame's value exceeding his contract in a way that enables a team to build a contender are him is much less likely.

Except you're leaving out the Dame is proven and significantly better. There is a scenario where Ant is just a role player in this league, making near all-star money. Building around role players is how you miss the playoffs for 5-7 years.

I guess it comes down to your risk appetite. If you want the more certain chance to be a mediocre team Dame probably fits that role. If you want increased upside to gamble at being a contender one day but are willing to take the risk of having an overpaid role player as you say then Simons is the better choice.

Take a look at the last 3 or 4 Champions and Conference champions. I would would venture to say that none of them would have won without stars over 30 on the teams. Dame, imo has 3-5 good star caliber years left.
