I'd have to go with the trade for Damon in 98'. I remember finding out listening on the radio, probably the Cowherd show and thinking how much he would bring to the team.

Mid-season trades only? Jermaine for Dale Davis had me pretty stoked, as I recall. I thought (like Sabas did) that "there's something wrong with [O'Neal's] brain" and that he'd never really be a great player. Davis was an All-Star though. Proven goods.

After the 73rd pre-dunk pump-fake, I was slightly less excited.

When Jermaine blew up in Indiana, I felt completely gypped.

Honorable mention because I haven't seen it mentioned yet: Walter Davis, but that ended up fucking up the rotation.

The trade I was the most excited about at the time it happened was when we traded Kevin Duckworth for Harvey Grant. I remember spending the whole summer listening to the radio waiting for a trade to happen. Then while I was at summer camp my dad sent me the article about the trade. Man, I was so excited. The idea that we were getting a go to guy for Kevin Duckworth blew my mind.

Tossup between Pippen and Steve Smith. That was the offseason that kept on giving - I was pretty stoked about getting Schrempf, and then Whitsitt just kept on a roll. They didn't call him Trader Bob for nothing...

I was reasonably optimistic about Stoudemire but too upset that we were giving up Alvin Williams to get him. (Although I was very happy to see the back of Kenny Anderson - I never liked Whitsitt's FA signings, Brian Grant notwithstanding.)

I was actually pretty excited about Duck for Harvey Grant, but that didn't last long.

Worst trade? In retrospect the pick that became Deron Williams for the pick that became Martell, and I wasn't stoked at the time. I hated the Rasheed trade at the time, but quickly came to realize how good it was.

In retrospect, the best trade ever was either Telfair for the pick that took Randy Foye or the swap of Foye for Roy, depending on which you take to be most essential to getting Roy. Essentially turning Telfair into Roy is un-fucking-believable.

There were so many at various points that were good...

Damon was great. He was a rising star. He supposedly was headed to Houston, done deal. Several teams stepped in, including Portland. Portland was considered the least likely of those involved, but Trader Bob got it done a week after everyone thought the deal with Houston was done. To this day, I never believe a deal is done until a player plays a game with his new team.

Rasheed was better. We got Sheed a year removed from him being drafted. We traded up to No. 8 in his draft, and tried to deal the No. 8 plus Rod Strickland for Washington's No. 4. No dice. We supposedly wanted Sheed or KG. A year later, we essentially made the same deal. And Sheed exploded. All the rage towards him in the end, I think, was caused by his lack of desire. Dude was better than TD if he wanted. Those battles with Webber. HUGE. I lived for those games. But he never wanted the level of fame and attention he got here. Too bad, cuz he could have stayed here, lived up to even half his potential, and left the game one of the greats, and his shit would be branded in gold. This city loved and embraced him and wanted him to rule the roost. Too bad he didn't care to. But that summer we acquired him was so fun. We drafted The Kid, traded for Sheed, traded for low Rider (for J-Robinson, HAHAHAHA), and signed Kenny Anderson.

Buck Williams was sweet. Those few years he played here in Portland were nothing short of solid. He played a huge role on some of the best teams in franchise history. I'll never forget that rebound against Phoenix. Looking back, he's the one reason that drafting Bowie wasn't the worst move ever in the NBA. I've met him several times, and let me tell you, dude is as classy as they come.

Scottie Pippen was another that was amazing. People say he rode MJ's coattails. But how many titles did MJ win without Pippen? How many guys with his height had his ability to handle the ball and move the offense? Acquiring him for 800 scrubs let me know that a good GM can get you anything your team desires. Trader Bob ended up his own worst enemy, but this deal was amazing no matter how you slice it. TB at his finest.
