The first All-Star voting results will be released Thursday, with a potential issue at the forefront. Second-year New Jersey forward Yi Jianlian could be aided strongly by votes from his native China as he competes for one of the two starting Eastern Conference forward spots with superstars Kevin Garnett and LeBron James. If Yi is not voted in as an All-Star, the budding big man has no chance of the East coaches voting him in as a reserve.

well the declining number can attributed to KG not needing to be the lone contributor with Allen and Pierce on the same team...and you can also see that with the many big leads they have....the big three often sit more minutes than most starters with bigger numbers. But with all this aside, can you hoonestly say that Yi even deserves to be in the All-Star game period?

It's all about average casual fans voting for Allen Iverson and Shaq every year because they are who they are. The All-Star Game is a popularity contest first, and foremost. If Yi gets voted in, that's because that's the way the system was built.

If the NBA really wants to make the ASG a skilled based contest, they'd only have GMs/Coaches/Staff vote in players and raise the stakes for the winner of the game.

For example, each conference's GMs/Coaches/Staff votes for the best players in their conference. Then in the East vs West ASG, the winning conference gets Home Court Advantage for the playoffs (similar to the MLB). Now THAT would be an exciting to game to watch. Who wouldn't want to watch that? Two dream teams fighting hard, trying to win something they actually care about!

The same thing could definitely be said about Ray and Paul, lest we forget that prior to the big 3 being assembled the Celtics were (by measure of their record) the worst team in the NBA. Then there were the Sonics.

Exactly...which is why I think that this resent rash of "KG-Beatings" I feel is unwarranted and I ask the question as to why KG would be "nothing" and is not "a good player" all of the sudden...it just goes to prove that people cheer the underdogs until they win...then people enjoy to beat them back down and hope they fail...it's really quite sad. When KG wasn't with the "NBA Champion" Celtics he was never targeted with such negativity.

Who cares about the NBA All-Star Game? It's for FANS. Fans vote the way the want to. If the game wasn't for the fans, it wouldn't be based on fans' votes. China is helping to keep the NBA in the black. As noted, there are months when the NBA gets more revenue from China than it does from North America. The NBA is building NBA-quality arenas in China for a Chinese version of the NBA. NBA teams visit China every year. No doubt, the Nets will be there next October. The Nets have THREE Chinese websites: two of their own and the Nets site on the NBA's league wide China site.

Voting for ethnic heritage is just one of a number of silly reasons why fans vote for players. It's no worse than punching in the names of your favorite team's players. Happens all the time. I hope Yi starts. I don't care about KG's ego or the supposed "integrity" of the All-Star game. (It might also help the Nets get Lebron who wants to be a "global icon". Yi's popularity should remind him of that.)
