Rumor What's going on in Portland?

When I moved here 20 years ago, I instantly fell in love with what was a quirky, small town. I continued to love it as it grew into a bigger, still quirky, more popular place. But that Portland is nowhere to be seen these days imo.

This is the first time I have ever wanted to leave.

The property crimes, the disrespect of the law by the protestors, the neglect by our elected officials, the destroying of small businesses - there is nothing cute or quirky or "weird" about it.

Just received this text this morning from my best friend, @BLAZER PROPHET. Sad, actually.

How are things in Nashville? Most of downtown Portland is shuttered up buildings with graffiti on them. Well over half the business are gone. Only a handful of restaurants remain. Antifa roams the streets at might and the mayor has a strict hands off policy with them. No matter what the crime, aside from murder, it's catch & release only. I can drive downtown at noon on a week day and not see 15 people.

Oh, and a follow up text, to boot...

Here ya go. Just read a crowd of 150 Antifa roamed thru the Pearl district last might smashing business windows, cars, graffiti.... and police were hands off for hours before asking them to disperse- which they were ready to do anyway.
I was downtown a couple weeks ago. Drove all the way up Broadway from NW Portland to the I-405 on ramp. Saw a lot of people. 15? Don't make me laugh. I had to dodge quite a few who seemed to be everywhere especially walking across intersections.

Well, the downtown rioting & vandalism at this point is just Portland. Where else is that happening?
Many cities across the nation... Most big cities are experiencing it.

Google most big cities with "protest" and you'll see most cities listed in the last week or two.

But the link was of a person who knows nothing about Portland...

So, the Mayor of Sandy knows nothing about Portland? Where's your proof supporting that statement?

we already went over this, A2M.

Have fun with that. My response back to you in agreement were regarding some of things you had cited. It doesn't necessarily mean he's not connected with Portland unrest.

Why the city is still letting people protest and smash windows and paint graffiti is beyond me. I work in the Pearl and it's a mess. The city is a mess. As one small business owner in the Pearl told the Oregonian before the planned "protest," "When is it going to stop?"

As you guys know, I am a died-in-the-wool Dem, but something is seriously f'd up in Portland right now.

Many want to turn their collective cheeks, though. Wonder why that is.

I just received a text from my friend (I'll call him Bob Incognito).

Man, I was just downtown, and there is NO one down here! All the shops are closed, and I haven't seen one police! Like literally, downtown Portland is a ghost town!

Of course, he sent me this text at 3:15 AM, but that's besides the point.

Also, totally unrelated, I got this tweet from a cousin of mine who lives in Baltimore. She said this.

Get this. I just saw a video on the tweets that said a crowd of 90K antifa roamed through Portland, tore up the grass at Tom McCall waterfront park, pooped in the Salmon Street Springs, pee'd on Portlandia and stole a bunch of stuff from Pioneer Place!

Oh wait, sorry, I'm thinking of Jan 6th, and the US Capitol, and it wasn't Antifa but Trump followers. My bad.
I was drunk. Okay?

just stop. You really should look into argumentative fallacies, because you just committed a HUGE one (and you know why people commit argumentative fallacies? Because they don't have a leg to stand on).

But please, go on and keep your head buried in the sand.
Hey, I commit argumentative fallacies all the time. What does that say about me?

Here's my theme song:

Here you go, I think it suits you!

Go ahead, scream.

That was one day. This is nine months.
That was the Capitol. There have been protests in Portland before. I remember the one avoided by governor Tom McCall between Vietnam war protestors and American Legion counter protestors by creating a rock concert called Vortex.
The last time someone brought fire to the Capitol was in 1812. Five people were killed on January 6.

@Lanny - No one is defending what happened in the Capitol, least of all me. Give me a friggin break. My point is that prolonged, violent protests like this have been unique to Portland.

That's not how the burden of proof works. There is no evidence or reason to assume he knows anything about Portland. Why a would somebody who lives 30 miles from Pioneer Courthouse Square know what's going on daily in Portland?

See my point? Not a great source...

How many deaths have occurred in these violent protests?

How many businesses have been vandalized? How many put out of business? How many livelihoods ruined?

And to what end?

Last night, and made-up reason was to protest Biden’s ICE policies. Before that it was to protest Trump. Whatever else. They’re just looking for a reason to loot the city at this point.

Name me another city that is allowing thugs to regularly rummage through their downtowns, looting and vandalizing?

You were comparing it with the Portland protests. And the riot in the Capitol was plenty violent, more violent than anything seen in any city in America including Portland. The FBI is coming down plenty hard on those assholes much worse that they ever have on any city riots.

Seattle

What is your point?

That what’s going on in Portland is ok?

If so, please tell me what they are protesting now and what they are accomplishing.
It was a simple reply to your statement. No particular point was intended. So, why the big deal?
It's got zero to do with anything being okay or not okay.

That it's not just Portland. It's not just Portland leaders or Portland politics. It's an overall problem in this country that needs to be addressed at the federal level.

The question isn't what partisan side is right or wrong, the question is why do people feel the need to do this? How can we decelerate or even reverse the mechanism which is driving this desire?

Even downtown? In that same area, by the courthouse? It's always been bad there and on burnside and old town as long as I've been around. All this shit going down is horrible and needs to stop, but I hate the blanket "Portland this and that". My city is amazing.....like I said, about 85% of it.
It goes further back than that.
