I heard last night that there are about 20 Republican Senators willing to convict Trump of impeachment and McConnell is one of them..
Still need a 2/3 majority vote. So even if all Dem's voted you would still need about 16 Repub's to vote for it.So i have a question:
Since dems will have the majority in the senate by the beginning of this trial... (and the house, if that means anything to this) doesn't that make it easier for a conviction...
Or is it because the impeachment was done while that one person was still in the house, will they "grandfather" the senate -- and have the hearing as if it was still a R-ran senate, just for this instance?
It might be a dumb question... I just don't know.

It technically makes it easier, but not by much. You need a two-thirds majority for conviction, so 66 yes votes. Democrats are now up to 50 votes from 47, but need 16 more still.
Edit: That's two-thirds of all Senators who vote, so if fewer than 100 vote, you need less yes votes. But you need a minimum of 80 votes for a quorum.
The trouble is that some Republicans including Senators are afraid for their lives and the lives of their loved ones with all of the death threats they're getting. I think the key is making them feel safe.McConnell won't agree to reconvene congress so it won't happen before the inauguration.
I think there's a lot of signalling going on right now.
* McConnell wanted this leak out there because he wanted to put trump on notice not to do anything else stupid before the 20th. And especially not to incite any more violence
* I think McConnell and the R's will be quite open to convicting trump in a Senate vote because they want him out of the republican equations as much as possible over the next 4 years. By waiting until Schumer is in charge, then it will be the D's running the show letting McConnell and the R's off the accountability hook
* there would probably be at least a half dozen R votes to convict this week. They would still be there if impeachment happens after Biden is Prez.
* I also think McConnell and the R's know there will be lots more news revealed about what went on and much of it will make trump look worse
* and the R's know that if trump is convicted by the Senate, there would be an immediate vote to prohibit trump from ever holding federal office again. That's what McConnell and R leadership really want
* trump is beginning to realize how serious this all is and how diminished he is and how vulnerable he is to charges. That's why he put out the press release imploring his minions not to be violent and unlawful.
