When should Chauncey be fired?

Haven't said anything about coaching until now. I really had high hopes for Billups. But at this point in the season we should be seeing a more cohesive and creative offense and the defense should know what they are doing. We should not be hearing Lamar Hurd every night saying "That's a correctible error" on defense. Also, why is a player like Sharpe regressing instead of progressing? Are they putting him in places where he can succeed and build his confidence?

Did you guys hear the postgame interviews from Dame and Billups?

Highkin asked both the same question of why we keep losing leads.

Billups said something along the lines of us losing focus and not sustaining effort when teams start getting aggressive. He attributed it to youth.

Dame said we don't make adjustments when other teams change their tactics. His answer was a lot more insightful about the actual reason. Feel like he unintentionally threw shade at Billups.

The tank has been on and they have to say something. It's all just BS noise.

I don't think the players and coach are in on the tank, yet. Both seemed to be fighting desperately last night. I think they realized they really needed that game for a chance for the playoffs. They may begin giving up very soon.

When Lillard sat at NOLA with "calf tightness" I'd say the players and coaches became aware.

Making Trendon Watford our 4th qtr go to shooter is another pretty clear sign even though he'd been bricking shots all night long and whenever he made one he immediately fouled somebody afterwards sending them to the line....if he's our future, we're in trouble.

I think part of why the Blazers have given up so many big leads is that other teams don't worry about getting behind to the Blazers. They know they have a level they can go to that we can't. The same thing happened when we faced the Warriors in the WCF, we got big leads and they ran us down every time. I don't think those big leads are the major positive some fans think they are. If we were better those teams would ratchet it up earlier.

I don't think Chauncy is a good coach but I also don't think the Blazers should be much better than they have been. I think we were a .500 talent team when the season started. After the trade deadline we aren't anymore. Management gave Chauncey a roster that has no hope on defense.

Cronin filling the lineup with inexperienced players is a safety valve for Billups to utilize in post game pressers.

we don't know if Billups is a good coach, because look at the lineup he has to work with

Teamwork is in the Front Office, not just on the court

He was barely over .500 in 33 games with Nurk, Grant, Hart, Ant, Dame

He is a shitty coach that does not make any adjustments in game

I don't disagree to a point?
My problem is we used this excuse last year as well. The beginning of last year Billups had vets and some talent to work with and it was abysmal. He had Dame, CJ, Roco, Powell, Nurk.
This year started out with some players actually winning before they got scouted fully. After that the excuse was they were too small which was valid.
I started this season feeling like they still had a rookie coach because of the tank last year.
What am i supposed to think to begin next year? Is Billups off the hook again because he isn't expected to put a quality effort out right now?

when a team basically tanks a season, like the Blazers did last year, you don't really pay attention to any adjustments the coach made or didn't make. You don't really pay attention to whether or not bad habits are corrected, habits like consistently losing big leads in the 2nd halves. You really notice if the schemes the coach is running fit the personnel. You don't notice questionable rotations and substitution patterns

but when a team is trying to win and make the playoffs, you notice all those things. And what I've noticed this season is that Chauncey has failed consistently at those things all year. I don't know how anyone can justify giving him another season to get things right when he's spent 2 seasons getting things wrong.

Every indication I am getting, albeit I have absolutely no connections, is he is here next year. Everything that seems to be being written is they will bring him back.

Unless he gets an internal complaint filed against him, I tend to agree that there is little reason to believe he'll be fired this calendar year.

It also seems unlikely the franchise will be able to bring in a proven winner as their next coach, so adding further instability probably wouldn't be that great of a move anyway.

I've noticed all the things. Chauncey keeps getting to hide behind tanking and having a lackluster roster. Eventually though, the coach takes the blame. I'd say he will be here next season, but if the Blazers don't start winning, especially if Cronin hits a trade out of the park, the spotlight will be on Chauncey.

The Front Office is having fun scouting the top 10 rookies. The Blazers are having fun padding stats. Fans are having fun getting their free chicken nuggets.

Some of us see the players show little to no effort on defense. It's not from lack of talent, it's from having a nice coach that doesn't aggressively teach them to win. Until actual player names show up in the Coach complaint box, Billups has job security.

Oh I agree 99.99% chance he is coaching next year.

"they" just decided to add a stupid looking bigfoot mascot who seems more suited to a horror movie. They decided that having one player on the active roster over 6'9 was a good idea. They decided that hard-capping the team to sign Gary Payton was a good idea. They decided that trading 3 first round picks for RoCo and Nance was a good idea. They decided to give Evan Turner 70M and matching 75M for Crabbe were good ideas. They decided that adding Bazemore, Hezonja, and Tolliver was a good off-season's work. They decided that paying Nurkic 18M/year for 4 years was smart.

just because Blazer management is choosing to do something, or not do something, doesn't begin to convince me they are making a good decision. I'm convinced that any decision made by Olshey that hasn't paid off after 2 years should be revoked. And Billups sure as hell hasn't paid off

if next season means anything, and I suggest it means a lot, keeping a coach in place who has performed as poorly as Billups is a bad decision, IMO. There is only one justification for keeping Billups and that's the duration of his contract. It sure the fuck isn't anything he's done as a coach

So, Jerami Grant in Quick’s article today offers up his opinion of fans who are calling for Chauncey’s head on pike:

“I think those people are stupid,” Grant said. I’m ready to run through a wall for him, no matter what. I’m looking forward to playing for him.”

From Lillard on down the roster, the view seems consistent that Chauncey isn’t the problem.

No one gives a fuck about chicken nuggets except Sly.

Irrelevant until the Blazers have a HCA roster. Let's see what happens in the summer, but I suspect we won't have that next year either.

So priority 1 2 3 is upgrading the talent on the roster.

Chauncey has buy in from players and seems to develop youth well. Unless that changes there is no reason to consider a coaching change.

Pretty sure Jerami just called me stupid.

I'm fine with BOTH Chauncey and Grant going. Jerami can run through a wall instead of out the door.

Blazers just lost 5 straight games immediately after telling everyone they're gonna put in extra effort to make a playoff run. The fallout ?? Big fat juicy "we love Coach Billups" articles get printed.

A rookie 57th pick in the draft who skipped his last two years of college. Did you expect him to be an immediate NBA rotational player?
He looked a lot better in SL than players that Chauncey DOES give minutes to. He's one of our best +/- guys in the few minutes he plays. He rebounds like a motherfucker and we need that badly. Given that we're obviously fucking tanking, yes I absolutely do.

Aren't the things that Chancey is supposedly good at more usually the province of an assistant coach?
