Are Today's Players As Good As The 80s/90s?

Cant argue with that.

Todays stars...

Curry
LBJ
Wade
Thompson
Cousins
Harden
Howard
Lillard
Horford
Bosch
Dirk
KD
Westbrook
C.Paul
D.Jordan
Drummond

I have to say today's players I think would be vastly outmatched. I don't see how these guys are better than your lists. MAYBE your third string...
Where's C.J?

All/any would be 1st or 2nd in the MVP voting this year.

Just so I can be sure that I'm reading you correctly--you believe that any/all of the players that were in the top 20 in MVP voting in 1986 would--if their 1986 selves played in 2016, would have been in the top 2 in MVP voting this year? Am I misinterpreting you here?

Agreed. But I was arguing that the talent level of the NBA, not an individual, doesn't stack up.
LBJ, Wade, Kobe (retired) all are 1st tier players, even if their current level of play isn't 1st tier.
"Talent"

Starting a new thread is not going to end the discussion or arguments.

It's only going to lengthen them.

I feel the need to quote this. I knew it was going to lead to nothing but more arguments.

Apparently I need to come up with some evidence that there hasn't been a widespread genetic mutation causing people to be born less talented at basketball. Ok.

Let me get this straight. Your original list includes the likes of Steve Kerr as a third tier player, who never averaged over 8.6 ppg or 3.2 apg, and you're somehow equating that to your list of current 3rd tier players like Cousins or Lillard or Harden? Are you insane?
So you have an issue with one of my 3rd tier guys and that renders the multitude of other names meaningless? Maybe Kerr doesn't belong - I shot that list off from the hip - but in each large tier there will be varying degrees of talent.

Dude... you listed McHale who'd been retired like 3 or 4 years before guys like Marbury even got into the league. A little hypocritical are we? If you want to compare this current year to 20-25 years of basketball then yeah, those 20-25 years could probably field a better team... not exactly apples to apples though.
I was just listing names. No, not all those players played at the same time, but A LOT of them did. My argument is that if you take the top talent of any single season of the 80s and 90s, that 90% or more of those seasons will have better and deeper talent than we've seen in the NBA for the past few seasons, and probably the next several too.

People always want something to hate on. It's not acceptable to be racist or sexist anymore, so people just start hating on generations. It's ok, people being good today, doesn't make your favorite players of the past any less good. It's gonna be ok...

It's never been acceptable to be racist or sexist, no matter the generation. Ignorance does not mean automatic acceptance.

But that's a completely different topic.

Rabble rabble rabble kids these days rabble rabble rabble fucking millenials rabble rabble rabble back in my day rabble rabble rabble

It was at one time. It was enforced by law.

Certainly the top 10 would, as well as Worthy, McHale, and Dantley.

Steve Kerr is not on par with Cousins or Lillard or Harden. He was a role player, much like most of the NBA is today. A 3pt specialist.

It's sickening. Still ignorance, even if law. But sickening. Glad the times have changed.
Now if only we could get people to stop stereotyping whole generations of people! Maybe people will see the connection.

Certainly the top 10 would, as well as Worthy, McHale, and Dantley.

I'd also point out that Bernard King was hurt most of that season. The year before he led the league in scoring at 32PPG and a 25 PER.

That's just one example. And yes, it discredits your entire list when you feel the need to stretch the truth that much to try to make a point.

You were being critical of someone listing names of people who have retired recently... But it's okay for you to do that? If you really want to compare a season in the 80's or 90's to 2016, then do that. Don't make a misleading list that spans multiple generations.

Steve Kerr is not on par with Cousins or Lillard or Harden. He was a role player, much like most of the NBA is today. A 3pt specialist.

Yes I know he's not on par with those guys, that's my point. And yes most of the players in the NBA are, and have always been, role players.

Are someone of you going to go back and clean up your personal attacks or am I just doing to start deleting posts?

Illl clean mine up, thought I thought I made a point to say his posts.. etc. But I don't care. Don't mean to make work for you, but was just trying to feed someone a bit of their own medicine. You know me. lol.

Plus, I thought Stren was gonna clean it up and I knew he could use something to do?...

I didn't call him an idiot. I said that if someone denies logic to appease their own personal bias, then that makes them an idiot. If he took offense to that, that's not my problem. Delete it if you want I guess.

It's been on my mind to do...

Meh.. Would have been a great continuation if certain people didn't act like know it all's belittling anyone who had a differing opinion.... but then how the hell could I expect that from here?

Don't mean to make work for you, but was just trying to feed someone a bit of their own medicine.

Oh that's what you were trying to do? Then I regret to inform you that you failed miserably.

You were being critical of someone listing names of people who have retired recently...
Recently? I guess everything is relative. But the discussion is about today's NBA, so I don't think guys like Iverson/Camby/etc really qualify. I'd say those are stars from a previous era, even if it wasn't the 90s. Kobe played this season, but when you think about Kobe his era was a decade+ ago. Ditto Duncan.

If you really want to compare a season in the 80's or 90's to 2016, then do that.
Denny's provided some. I have yet to see the other side of the argument put together a list that rivals either my list or Denny's.
