Did he fit better there than the other options? Maybe that's why they were able to offer more? Maybe they were more interested in winning?
Did you sit on every conversation? Are you Cronin? Do you think every trade rumor you hear is true? And that every rumor you hear means those are the only offers made?

No, I actually didn't say that.

Didn't say that either.

Also, not what I said.

I have the fact that CJ was traded in the deal he was... which is better evidence than I've seen from you.

Just show us the better value that was available. You disagree? Just show us what was actually being offered so we can all get on the same page.

Or do you have anything to fall back on?
Cronin said he left value on the table! A league insider says the common thought across the league was that it was a good value deal for New Orleans. And you just choose to ignore that for whatever reason, so whatever.

Is this new today? Did he give any specifics?
I misheard something in translation. But Cronin himself admitted he left value on the table and Fisher said that the league thought it was a good value for the Pelicans and Fisher said that you'd think the Blazers would be able to get more pick compensation, so it's pretty obvious that Cronin could've/should've done better.

I haven't claimed any trade rumor was true. I have generally only accepted rumors which are supported by actual events.

Did you perhaps reply to the wrong post?

They wanted a lottery pick by making playoffs as a way to not penalize themselves in the trade by improved performance and making offs.
What? Them making the playoffs didn't determine whether or not they had a lottery pick though so that makes no sense.

Did he? I'm not sure. I haven't seen that quote. Judging on the way you've misquoted me and refused to support the claims you're making I'm not inclined to believe your version of events without something to substantiate them...

This was a Great Exodus of talent from Portland. Not as severe as Roy and Oden leaving from injury, but maybe even more dispiriting. Because it was done with no real road map for a future. Because it was self inflicted.

Self-inflicted like the horrendous contracts we handed out in 2016 that hamstringed our franchise for years afterward.

Self-inflicted like the 7 years of decision to bring back CJ even when it was clear he was a terrible fit next to Dame.

Self-inflicted like the decision to trust Aldridge to re-sign instead of bailing on us without compensation.

I don't know, man. Every time I think, "This shit has broken me as a Blazers fan," and I come back for one reason or another.

I hope Simons comes through as an elite player, and Nas gives us something amazing. Because I see nothing new emanating from trade or the draft that gives me any hope for the future.

The Suns, Bucks, Griz and maybe Sixers are just more interesting teams right now to watch. They seem to do shit that's smart and interesting and fun and forward thinking. I don't even know why I should care about Portland anymore, other than Dame.

I haven't looked at this forum in 6 weeks, and I probably won't again for a while. I might be done this time. These were the trades that did it.
Great post. I also feel super depressed about this franchise, similar to signing Evan Turner or the Oden/Roy injuries.

Sure some fans are going to want to actually see the games played next year until they judge Cronin and this franchise. Other Blazer fans are just happy no matter how terribly run the ship is.

But I've followed this team for enough decades to know when the plans can succeed, are closer to the 50/50, or are extremely unlikely to succeed. There just isnt a realistic series of events between now and we'll into next season that can get this roster to a promising level of eventually contending.

It's depressing because as you say Cronin did it by his and ownership own choosing, not a injury or free agent exodus or other outside event. Or a star trade that didn't pan out. It was done by sheer incompetence.

I also do wonder at times if I'd be more happy just not following this franchise at all. It seems like a painful sadomasochism relationship more often than actual enjoyment of watching the team.

It was a good value for New Orleans. As long as they were willing to take on salary, anybody who got CJ was going to get a good value.

Yup. A guy can be over-paid and still be a good player. He can be a bad fit in a particular situation and still be a good player. In all the heated arguments this board had about CJ, that was a nuance that often got lost.

Agreed. I like CJ but I understand it was time for a change. Of course I was hoping to get an equally or more talented long 2 way player... But those guys are all stars. Wasn't going to happen outside of Ben Simmons.

Well it's going to see how much the young improved through the off season and includes Simons and Little that's going be in the rotation every day. Plus what we do in bring players in FA. We could have have a decent team under Billups if everyone buys into there roles.

This trade is looking better as time goes by IMO, especially the dumping of Powells long term contract and frankly Winslow/Keon look better and are much cheaper than an ageing Roco who they resigned for 2/24. The extra money freed up made acquiring Grant and GPII easier as well as re-signing Nurk and Simons. Powell and Roco off to horrible starts in first 3 games.

Since the pick turned into Grant, in my mind the trade was...
Hart/Winslow/Grant for CJ/Norm/Nance/RoCo

A couple of thoughts:
  • So, we really traded 4 rotation players for 3.
  • Winslow is good, but really a borderline rotation player, imho.
  • Hart is the SF we wish Norm was, but wasn't.
  • The long athletic Grant is the PF some of us have been missing since the Biotch left.
  • The trade was actually addition by subtraction, but in a weird way - we reduced the number of "bad" defensive players in our rotation from 3 (Lillard, CJ, Ant) to 2.
  • The roster is more balanced, with some of CJ's $$$ going to Grant. Of course, the roster isn't completely balanced yet as we are a Nurk-injury away from serious trouble.
Quick Note:
We made another trade: 12 wins and the 12th pick (random guess) for pick #7.
Good trade, imho. It may turn out to be great!

The only thing I would disagree with is Winslow. I like him better than Roco, and Nance. He is most definitely a rotation guy now that he is healthy. His BBIQ, defense, strength, and ballhandling for his position offset any lack of outside shooting IMO.
Love when he is on the floor.

I agree. Winslow is a Draymond Green type of player. He is not as good as Draymond was in his prime, but that's likely because of injuries. He is not paid like Draymond either. Winslow is the kind of player that helps you win.

yeah, if Winslow is a "borderline rotation player", so are RoCo and Nance. Same for Powell as a SF

The 3-0 start to the season is starting to become more epic than last years magical "4 game winning streak".

It's been a very fun 3 games, but lets see what the team looks like after 20 games before using these tiny size results to prove Cronins trades were good.

I currently stand by all my statements bashing Cronin's moves and the trades. If the Blazers are #1 in the West after 20 games I'll take it all back. Would love to be proven wrong.

pretty clear, to me at least, that another product of the trades was being in the position to draft Sharpe. Keeping those former players would have given Portland a few more wins and dropped them lower than Sharpe's range

Well sure, just think if the team trades Dame right now for nothing, we could possibly be in a position to draft Wemba.

Or perhaps its a better strategy to maximize the return from outgoing players while simultaneously positioning a team to tank.

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love watching light bulbs come on.
Finally, ya'll starting to see what I saw all along.
"Addition by subtraction"...
It's a beautiful thing.

Many posters here where making similar statements during the epic 4 game win streak last season, how the Blazers would be in the play in if not outright playoffs. Then the team finished with a historic amount of losses.

Lets see how the Blazers fare over 20 games. The last year of McMillian the Blazers also started 3-0; ultimately culminating in the Felton/Jamal Crawford/Caleb Kanals disaster of a season.
