Why It’s Time Black People Simply Disengage With White People In Discussing Race

My argument is that 50000 kids can't learn to shoot free throws in one gym with one shooting instructor.

This is a really good analogy that might help white people get it. Thanks.

A kid that doesn't get taught to shoot free throws might become ok on his own, but he might pick up bad habits that a teacher could have prevented.

He's behind from the beginning and people expect them to go Nike and Just Do It.
you don't have an argument then because nowhere on earth are fifty thousand students having free throw practice in a single school gym...I grew up outside a town of 75 people...county had 3000, good schools...graduating class of 18...we weren't overcrowded but sure as hell didn't have a shooting coach...we had hoops on barns to figure it out. Plenty of great achievers come from poor inner city backgrounds but just like winning in sports...you have to want it more than the competition. The key to preventing bad habits in math or basketball is simple....you ask questions, you read and apply it....I read books by basketball coaches before I tried my hand at coaching....didn't go to a coaching school.

The closest library to my childhood home was a 20 minute drive.

I knew how to read before I went to kindergarten, but I had my grandmother and flash cards to teach me. That isn't happening for these kids.
nonsense.....you disrespect a lot of hard working teachers.....you can teach kids, but you can't make them apply it..you can teach someone to read and they can go through life without reading a book. Choices......as a child my library was a lot further from our farm than 20 minutes, but I had a bicycle...if the movies were 20 minutes away, kids would find a way to get there.

Good idea. If there's a library. What if there isn't?
You can pay out of district fees to any library in the country and use their ebook systems...it's much easier to connect these days...the only places in Oregon that closed their libraries was Jackson county and that was because of a majority of no votes on the ballot...tax payers didn't want to pay for it probably because they had cable tv bills to pay. It's a shame. I went to a conference where they talked about it...libraries are going to have to start retailing for profit or they won't compete and they are becoming more and more website based.

Then you know what the word oblivious means. Just learn to apply it.

You completely ignore the different cultural and economic situation these kids come from. I guarantee you that any gang member wouldn't be one if he was adopted by a family in my neighborhood growing up.

You think he's just a piece of shit with no motivation.

I recognize the benefits I had even growing up a poor white kid in a rural neighborhood.

This useless library bullshit is a bandaid on an amputated leg. Libraries where I grew up are always fighting for funding. I'm sure libraries in inner cities aren't swimming in cash.

Don't tell me what I think dude.....I've seen a lot of the world, been in a war with poor urban kids from all over the country and taught for over 20 years...I don't think anyone is a piece of shit because of circumstance but I think ignorance is hand in hand with a lack of motivation. You have a lot of violent imagery in your angst about the world we share...if you are looking to argue with common sense and reasoning....you may need to stop sensationalizing disadvantages and learn that our system can work for those willing to put in the effort....being a victim takes practice just like being successful.

Both my parents were orphans....neither became a gang banger

Having access to a library doesn't mean you need to read at a library. It gives kids free access to books that they can take home.

So what's more relevant to the topic at hand--culture or economics? If a rich white kid grows up with distant parents who don't care about his intellectual development, and a poor black kid grows up with a single mom who works 90 hours a week over three minimum-wage jobs but insists that her child read whenever she can be there to make him do so, which child is better positioned for academia?

I grew up poor too (single mom in section 8 housing, barely attentive babysitters who parked me in front of Nickelodeon), and learned to read early as well because my mother recognized the importance of education. Who's responsible for ensuring prevalence of that understanding in inner-city neighborhoods and culture?

Funding Planned Parenthood and allowing people to have free or low cost abortions would eliminate the need for more libraries.

I honestly am really lost on what you guys are debating, haha, but I think we can all agree that the city could invest billions in multiple libraries and it could still not have an affect on kids unless they are parented correctly and have the correct guidance to utilize such benefits. To me, it's more about the parenting and less about resources like a Library.

So the real answer is..... stop letting morons have kids.

I agree!

I'm going Dviss on this thread.
I can't help but think you're enjoying this thread simply for the pleasure of arguing and pissing people off. I like to do that too sometimes. But as the husband of a lady who just retired after 30 years as a librarian, you...IMHO....are singularly misinformed. First, every community is different and their priorities may not match those of other communities. As Riverman pointed out, Jackson County made a conscious decision to eliminate educational resources for themselves and their children. Welcome to democracy. Since when is it "society's" fault when parents make stupid decisions? We all make choices and live with the results. My dad didn't particularly give a shit about libraries....or reading for that matter. My mother, who grew up in far more precarious circumstances than my dad, looked at libraries as a free gift from the almighty to better herself (and her kids). She taught my siblings and I to read by the time we were 4 years old and took us to the library at least once a week. In other words, she chose to be a responsible parent. Once we were old enough, we didn't wait for Ma. We got on our bikes and rode there eagerly. In other words, we chose to expand our minds. Those libraries were liberally sprinkled throughout Portland and were easily accessible to anyone and everyone, regardless of neighborhood.

It's up to the parent to be a parent and its up to the kid to want something better.....or not. Some people are lazy. Some people expect others to take care of them rather than make an effort to better themselves. Libraries, in their own way attempt to do the latter. I was a terrible classroom student in HS. Libraries are what ultimately put that diploma in my hand because I knew what I would find there and how to use it. I currently live in a generally affluent....and white.....suburb of Portland. The community is a huge (YUGE!) supporter of our library (and the rest of the libraries in our county). Said county has a huge (YUGE!) migrant population. We are well known for our children's reading programs, story times and outreach services in both English and Spanish. Several story times per week are for the Hispanic population (in Spanish and held at times that are convenient to working parents) and are jammed packed each and every week, all because both the parents and the kids want something better for themselves. In other words, they made choices (and the effort) to use the resources available to them. And the community made the choice to provide those resources. If any of those kids end up in gangs, jail, etc, it's because of choices they made. The library certainly didn't fail them. They failed in spite of the library. If you can't see libraries as value added to the human race then provide a better...and attainable...solution. You're blaming society but I'm blaming the parent for having kids they aren't prepared to have. And I blame the kids for not wanting something better....or at least something that doesn't end with a bullet before they're out of their teens. Libraries are one of the last lines of defense against ignorance and poverty. But as the old saying goes, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink......

I love libraries, but I think that the Web is probably putting them in a tenuous position going forward. When I think of all the hours I spent in libraries researching papers in high school and college, vs. the few seconds it takes to find information online... Hopefully, libraries are adapting and will find ways to remain relevant.

From a research standpoint.... absolutely.

But if you're trying to provide a portal to reading for someone with little means, you can't beat a library. Also, it can be difficult to do a research paper strictly on the internet if you're looking for credible sources. Sometimes it's just easier to go to the library and grab a bunch of academic journals.

Seems like this ought to get posted somewhere, so I'll just drop it in here and run:

I just see a dude who should be focusing on nothing but football because his career is hanging by a thread right now. Instead he's creating a scene and making it about off the field stuff. It really sucks because I loved watching him play a few years back, but his confidence is shot, and he's not the same player anymore. Now I see him doing this and I just feel sad for him.

Doesn't he get $18mill no matter what happens this season?

Tragic.

It's still sad to see someone squander their talent. Then again, he's almost 29 so it's not like he's a kid anymore. He maybe would have 4-5 more years anyway. I imagine he'll get cut by the Niners and ride someone's bench for a year or two.

Seems like if he could tap back into what he used to show, he'd fit well with Chip's system.
