Event With the 11th pick, Blazers have selected Cedric Coward & trading him to the Grizz

I am 100% sure Cedric will maintain his 3-game averages over a 20 year NBA career
Of course he's going to cool off, but if you watch him play he looks very comfortable out there and Memphis is giving him a lot of minutes for a rookie.

This guy is going to make the Blazers wish they had kept him. I think the Idea of going for Hansen will be a good move also but no question Coward is a stud.

Looking forward to seeing where they both are in three years.
I think you will see Coward play better faster but Hansen might be a steal also. You gotta give something to get in this world. Also there is that unprotected first rounder. Is it Charlotte? Can't remember Orlando?

It doesn't hurt that he's had 3 years of college ball and is a full 2 years older than Yang (for those who like to quibble, he's 1 year and 10 months older).

But I think we need to reemphasize this neat thing called "sample size". Eventually he will return to earth, just as VJ Edgecombe wasn't going to dominate the league, nor is Cooper Flagg not going to be ok, or Ace Bailey going to only average 1 ppg.

Whiffed on Coward, who may be better than Shae like right now lol

Yang has been literally unplayable. He’s too slow to mesh w this offense we are trying to run

Turns out modern NBA SG need to shoot and play defense. Shae can’t do either

Well, here is the guy I wanted to pick. :smiley-irked: He hasn't got a minute of playing time yet; he's very young though.
Essengue didn't play during Wednesday's 115-111 win over the Pistons.

Spin: The Bulls appear to be bringing the rookie first-rounder along slowly, as he was unable to crack the Opening Night rotation. Chicago could be better served by sending Essengue to the G League's Windy City Bulls so that he can get consistent reps and development time, but the parent club could opt to keep him around while Zach Collins (knee) is sidelined.

I really liked Coward, he was my guy at 11. Want to get behind Yang but it'll be hard watching early returns for Coward given that he's wicked old for his class.

Orlando in 2028. Likely be in the 20's

also got Atlanta's 2027 2nd

It's only 3 games, but CC is averaging 19 points a game on 70% FG shooting, .727 from '3', .917 from the FT line with 3.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.7 steals all in just 22 minutes per game. That is INSANE efficiency for a rookie and of course he won't keep that up.....but that production is making the swap not look very good very early on.
He has officially now been scouted. Let’s check back in in 10 days.

I always us Brandon Jennings as an example of NBA advanced scouting….in his first 8 games or so he averaged like 27 a game as a rookie……then BAM….. the scouting final kicked in. This happens every year right. I remember WAAAAAY back after 2 games that dude Flip Murray was leading the NBA in scoring then they figured him out. Lighten up on the HOF talk on this kid please. He has been amazing, but enough with the whole Blazers messed up on this pick. He would barely even be on the court here right?

From John Hollinger in The Athletic:

Rookie of the Week: Cedric Coward, SG/SF, Memphis

Do the Grizzlies have another draft steal from Washington State? One year after tabbing defensive stopper Jaylen Wells in the second round, the Grizzlies have another rookie Cougar excelling on the wing in Cedric Coward. While Philadelphia’s V.J. Edgecombe is getting more attention, for reasons both statistical (Coward’s numbers jump off the page) and technical (I haven’t seen either of Philly’s three games), I’m going to talk about Coward this week.

The Grizzlies traded up on draft night to grab the late-bloomer with the 11th pick after his junior season was shortened by a shoulder injury, and, early in the season, you can already see why. He may not have the exclamation-point on-ball impact of Cooper Flagg or Edgecombe, but if he never misses a shot or commits a turnover this season, I think he’ll end up with some pretty good numbers.

I jest, but Coward’s first three games were ridiculously efficient. He shot 11 of 16 on 2s and 8 of 11 from 3, had seven assists, five steals and nary a turnover in 68 minutes.

The nice thing about Coward is that he has two completely different pathways to scoring. The first is as a finisher in transition, where he converts everything around the rim (and did so as a collegian, too). Coward scored five times in transition in the Grizzlies’ opener against the New Orleans Pelicans, including this one where he threw an outlet pass from his own free-throw line and still finished it with a dunk.

(Also, ummmm: Nice transition D, Pelicans. Great effort here. 10 out of 10.)

But Coward is also a knockdown shooter with a quick release and enough size to get his release away over a closeout. He went 6 of 6 from distance in the Grizzlies’ win over what remains of the Pacers; while five were catch-and-shoots, this one off a screen — where he shrugged off Indiana’s 6-foot-9 Jarace Walker before launching — showcased a pathway to perhaps being a more prominent on-ball threat:

Coward’s dribble is mostly straight lines, and his handle can get high and loose, limiting some of his on-ball usage. However, between his size, his array of finishes at the cup, and his shooting range, the bar for his dribble game isn’t high; he just doesn’t need to create that much space.

It’s three games, so let’s not get too far out over our skis here, but Coward looks exactly like the plug-and-play, 3-and-D wing the Grizzlies were hoping he could be, except that his transition game makes it more like 3-and-D-plus. I presume he won’t continue to post 88 percent true shooting and a 0 percent turnover rate, but Coward’s eye-opening start is the best reason for optimism amidst an injury-plagued start to the year in Memphis. And if you see any Grizzlies scouts in the Palouse this winter, take note.

If we had him we could trade Shae for Collin Murray-Boyles...

And I don't think Blazers FO will EVER think they messed up on the pick if Yang brings us millions of fans in China. It's just that I don't give a shit about that.

If you are going to scream that we should have picked him after a couple good games, you also need to acknowledge when he has a Mediocre Man game.

He’s the player I wanted to select.

4-6 from the field and only 1 turnover. -1 in 25 minutes in a 13-point loss. Sounds like he was still pretty efficient and effective, even though he actually missed a couple shots.

pretty efficient and effective = mediocre/average
IMO

so trading a guy who has admittedly struggled to start the season but has a track record of being able to screw, for a guy who has played 2 games in the association.

Sounds smart. You've sold me.

Did Yiang Lian bring millions of fans to Milwaukee?

Yang will need to produce on the court for any significant long term benefit to the Blazers.
